Dr. Hommert earned a BS degree cum laude in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He received an Outstanding Alumnus Award for Professional Excellence in 2003 from Purdue's School of Mechanical Engineering and a Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award in 2010 from Purdue's College of Engineering. In 2013, Dr. Hommert was named Laboratory Director of the Year by the Federal Laboratory Consortium for his support of Sandia's technology transfer activities. The award recognizes federal laboratories and their industry partners for outstanding technology transfer efforts and has become one of the most prestigious honors in technology transfer. During the implementation period, we have been processing travel reimbursements with paper form 25's or through Concur, but we will need to migrate completely to Concur by November 22. This date will coincide pretty closely with the last date that Travel will be able to accept paper form 25's. Please contact your departmental Business Manager if you have any concerns about any training needs that might exist. We have staff in the Business Office who are happy to assist you and provide individual training resources as you book a trip or prepare the expenditure report. O*NET is gathering this information for a national database that is being used by millions of employers, workers, educators and students across the country. This database provides information about the skills, abilities, activities, and work context for about 900 occupations nationwide. As senior-level students working in the nanotechnology field, you can provide essential information about Nano-technician jobs. This is a worthwhile endeavor that will help the general public understand the responsibilities of the occupation. By completing and returning the O*NET questionnaires, you will contribute to a key resource, providing our nation's citizens with continuously updated occupational information. Responses from experts such as yourself will be combined to define the skills, knowledge and other aspects of work in your field. Migration of reservation to the new outlook/room wizard system

Dear all, This Thurs and Fri, Oct. 10-11th we will be migrating the current conference room reservations from our Resource Allocation Tool (RAT) system to our new Outlook/Room Wizard system. In order to do this we need to make sure no new reservation are made through the RAT system so they are not missed while transferring to our new Outlook/Room Wizard system. Therefore, if you can wait to make a room reservation please do so until after the migration but if you need one during it, please see one of the secretaries and they can help you with it. On Monday Oct. 14th (after the migration) we will shut the RAT system down and start using the new Outlook/Room Wizard system exclusively for scheduling conference rooms. Thank you, Jaime Turner Deputy Director The Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) in Discovery Park is launching an internal search to identify an individual with demonstrated leadership and vision for the position of Deputy Director of the Center. Birck Nanotechnology Center provides shared lab space, state-of-the-art equipment, and expert scientific and engineering staff to support collaborative research by resident and nonresident users. This includes the 25,000 square foot Scifres Nanofabrication Laboratory. A portion of the cleanroom is configured as a biological/pharmaceutical cleanroom to facilitate bionanotechnology research in collaboration with Bindley Bioscience Center. Key facilities such as surface analysis, nano metrology, electron microscopy, molecular beam epitaxy, atomic layer deposition, microelectromechanical and femtosecond laser provide analytical services to support a wide variety of research. Current areas of research emphasis include computational and experimental nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, nanobiotechnology and nanoenergy conversion. There is a new initiative in roll-to-roll nanomanufacturing. The BNC's highly collaborative atmosphere includes space for industry partners and companies; the BNC supports and facilities technology transfer and entrepreneurship. The Deputy Director will work closely with faculty on collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects within the Birck Nanotechnology Center in order to enhance the reputation of BNC as a collegial place to advance faculty research. Through these activities, the Deputy Director will enable more large-scale faculty projects that align with the Center's strategic directions. In order to accomplish this, he/she will establish procedures for joint submission of grants (cost share, space, and shared equipment). Through collaborative and engagement activities, the Deputy Director will increase the number of faculty projects using Birck Nanotechnology Center facilities and increase interactions with industry. The Deputy Director will also play a key role in helping/advising the commercialization of technology developed at BNC. The position of Deputy Director is a 0.5 CUL with a reporting line to the Director of the Birck Nanotechnology Center. The Deputy Director is a member of the Purdue University Faculty with the rank of tenured full Professor. The Deputy Director is expected to maintain an active research program. He/she will work closely with BNC's Engineering and Facility Managers to provide leadership in the day-to-day operations of the Center. Administrative experience in the leadership of multi-investigator research programs and experience with industrial partnerships is highly desirable. Flu Shot Free flu shots available at Center for Healthy Living in October and November The Center for Healthy Living is providing free flu shots by appointment for all benefits-eligible employees, plus spouses/same-sex domestic partners (SSDPs) who are covered on a Purdue medical plan. Appointments are available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, Oct. 4 through Nov. 8. To schedule, eligible individuals should call the center at 49-40111. The Center for Healthy Living is located in the Purdue West Shopping Center at 1400 W. State St. Free parking is available, and no permit is needed. The center does not provide flu shots for children. The dollars spent with these vendors represents approximately 85 percent of the annual purchase order volume at the University. Procurement Services has negotiated vendor discounts for each catalog offered and will continue to monitor catalog pricing so that University constituents are able to buy at the lowest cost for the various commodities offered. Additional vendor catalogs with discounted pricing are in the pipeline and will be forthcoming in the coming weeks. These purchase orders will be manually sent to non-enabled vendors via email or fax server. All purchase orders issued by the University will be monitored by Procurement Services to ensure successful transmission to the vendor. Dollars spent with non-enabled vendors will be reviewed and Procurement will work with those used most frequently to enable them on the Ariba network.
