Please take a moment to review the following safety guidelines for extremely warm weather conditions. http://www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/pdf/osha_heatcard.pdf Your continued assistance in minimizing cooling demand while maintaining a safe environment in your facility is appreciated. In addition to the curtailment steps that have already been implemented by the Utilities Department, you can help to reduce cooling demand by: * Shutting off lights in unoccupied areas * Turning off unnecessary/unused equipment and appliances (computers, coffee pots, etc...) * Lowering window shades on the sunny side of the building Portable fans may be used for the comfort of building occupants where needed. Thank you in advance for your attention to the safety guidelines for warm weather conditions and for your assistance in minimizing cooling demand.

Scientific Director for Nanophotonics

To: The BNC Community I am pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Vlad Shalaev as Scientific Director for Nanophotonics in the Birck Nanotechnology Center. This appointment is in recognition of his role as the inspirational leader of our nanophotonics community. Prof. Shalaev is the Robert and Anne Burnett Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2010 Max Born Award of the Optical Society of America, the 2010 Willis E. Lamb Award for Laser Science and Quantum Optics, the 2009 Herbert Newby McCoy Award for the top research contribution from Purdue, and the 2006 Top 50 Nano Technology Award. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Physical Society (APS), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE). Over the past ten years, Vlad Shalaev has created one of the most highly acclaimed nanophotonics programs in the world, and brought enormous recognition to Purdue. Please join me in thanking him for his contributions and congratulating him on this appointment. -- Jim

Announcement from the Birck Mailroom

BNC Users, We want to inform you that starting Thursday July 14th, our mailroom will be short staffed. First we would like to congratulate SeAndra on her new position with Undergraduate Programs. This is a wonderful promotion for her and we wish her the best of luck. We are working on finding a replacement and we will be working with only 1 full time person in the office. We ask for your patience while we are in this transition period. The mailroom will be open from 7:00AM - 4:00PM. We are going to try and maintain an open door policy, but there will be times when the door will be closed while personnel is at the back dock handling shipments. In case of emergencies, you may call Mary Jo on her office phone 496-1173, leave a message and she will get back to you as soon as possible.. You may also schedule appointments with Mary Jo if needed. We would like to thank you ahead of time for your understanding in this situation and please give us any feedback that would help us, help you.
