New Jipelec RTA open for use

I am happy to announce the new Rapid Thermal Annealer (RTA) is open for training. This new RTA resides in R-Bay of the cleanroom, and has many improved capabilities over the old RTA systems. It has 4 process gases, atmospheric or vacuum capability, thermocouple or pyrometer temperature control, and also a maximum temperature of 1200°C (for a very short period of time). Keyence Digital Microscope Demonstration Tuesday July 3

All, The Keyence Corporation will be coming in to demonstrate their VHX-2000 digital microscope. It demonstration will be in conference room 2001 from 10:30am to Noon. The projected date for CLOSING the South entrance (by the kitchen/restroom area) to Bindley is set for Monday, June 18, 2012. Please plan ahead and revise your route accordingly. On Friday, June 29, 2012, the hallway on the main floor, that leads from the Atrium to the South end of the building (by the kitchen/restroom area) will be closed due to waxing the floors. Reportable Outside Activities Effective today, June 14, 2012, the Office of the Vice President for Ethics and Compliance (VPEC) has announced the availability of a secure, automated, online form to request approval of Reportable Outside Activities. The new online form is available at: https://webapps.ecn.purdue.edu/VPEC/OAD. The online form replaces the paper forms used previously, which will no longer be accepted. When an online request form is submitted, it will be forwarded automatically to your supervisor for recommendation and, subsequently, to your Unit Head, for approval. All exempt faculty and staff whether part-time or full-time, are required to submit a form before they engage in any Reportable Outside Activities. Approval of Reportable Outside Activities is granted only for the current fiscal year. At the beginning of each fiscal year (July 1), employees must request permission to engage in all Reportable Outside Activities in which they continue to participate, even if previous permission was granted. Reportable Outside Activities are defined in the Conflicts of Commitment and Reportable Outside Activities policy (policy III.B.1), which is available at http://www.purdue.edu/policies/ethics/iiib1.html. Development of a Platform Polymer Nanotechnology for Medical and Industrial Applications - Seminar

Professor Darren Martin, Group Leader Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and School of Chemical Engineering The University of Queensland TODAY, Wednesday, June 13, 2012 ARMS 1109 at 3:30 pm ABSTRACT TenasiTech is a developer and manufacturer of (nano)composite polymers for medical and industrial use. Current polyurethanes (PU) are at the limit of their performance, and competing options cannot achieve the desired performances without losing one or more of: flexibility, dimensional stability at ambient or elevated temperatures, clarity, biocompatibility or service longevity. Customers are demanding higher performance to grow market share for their PU products. TenasiTech1 is marketing Adaptive PolyolsTM to deliver novel nanotechnology for use with a broad range of PU types (eg thermoplastics, castables, foams and solvent based systems). With this pioneering development TenasiTech has enabled a "drop-in" nanotech solution for customers who make PU, without the need for any additional CapEx or OpEx investment. TenasiTech delivers: - super strength and toughness - excellent thermo-stability & dimensional-stability gains - increased resistance to oils/ethanol - enhanced film barrier properties. TenasiTech is currently developing products with "lighthouse" customers in a number of fields. TenasiTech is at industrial-scale production (tonnage) and now supplying to molders or formulators of polyurethane. In this presentation Darren will present his team's work on developing this nanotechnology platform from very basic and exploratory beginnings to where it is today, with special emphasis on the following three important themes: 1. The materials science and engineering2-5 2. Ensuring scalability1 3. Parallel investigations into nano safety and occupational hygiene6,7 SHORT BIO Professor Darren Martin's primary research themes are the processing and structure-property performance of novel polymeric biomaterials; renewable-based polymers and nanocomposites; and the toxicology of engineered nanoparticles. These interests overlap significantly, with mature initiatives now well underway, investigating the physical and biological performance of polyurethane nanocomposites for biomedical and industrial applications. There is also parallel research which links a better understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms associated with nanoparticle toxicology with measurements of industrial exposure and bio-distribution. One of Professor Martin's key research aims is to shift the strong underlying science and engineering taking place in these projects towards consumer products, or medical device component applications. For example, his research group is working on new flexible nanocomposite materials for Cochlear implants and various high-performance engineering applications. Professor Martin is the Chief Scientific Officer of start-up company TenasiTech, which is commercialising the polyurethane nanocomposite technology (www.tenasitech.com) The Martin research group has projects in: 1. Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Nanocomposites, through TenasiTech Pty Ltd, Cochlear Ltd and Aortech Pty Ltd; 2. The Toxicology of Engineered Nanoparticles, through ARC and NHMRC funded projects; and 3. Renewable polymers and composites based on resin from spinifex native grasses - an ARC funded project.

Materials Development for Advanced Composites Dr. Jim Snyder, Research Chemist, Materials & Manufacturing Science Division, U.S. Army Research Laboratory ARMS 1109 Tuesday, June 12th at 10:15 am ABSTRACT In order to meet the increasing demand for lightweight systems, there is interest in a wide range of advanced materials. This talk will highlight two areas in which materials research is being used to accelerate development of lightweight composites. In the first area, we are advancing a multiscale research program for low cost, high performance reinforcement of transparent composites that includes both preparation and application of cellulose-based nanomaterials. Cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibrils, which possess high specific strengths and moduli, are particularly intriguing for their potential reinforcement capabilities simultaneous with promotion of optical transparency. Parallel research thrusts are being pursued, including development and testing of high performance fiber and foam nanoarchitectures, integration with transparent matrices, and laminate testing. In the second research area, multifunctional fiber-matrix composites are being developed to store electrical energy while bearing mechanical load. Referred to as structural batteries and structural supercapacitors, mechanically robust properties are being designed directly into electrochemically active polymer-based electrolyte and fiber-based electrode components to optimize both energy storage and load-bearing capabilities. Properly designed, these technologies could be used to replace conventional structural components, such as vehicle frame elements, to enable significant system-level weight reductions. Current efforts focus on tailoring performance through the use of nanoparticle additives, chemical modifications, thin films, optimizing the interfaces and developing an understanding of nano- and microstructures as they relate to the desired properties. SHORT BIO Dr. Jim Snyder is a research chemist in the Materials & Manufacturing Science Division of the Army Research Laboratory. Dr. Snyder received his B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University, and his PhD from Northwestern University under the guidance of Professors Du Shriver and Mark Ratner. He has been at ARL since 2002 where he has been involved with a variety of research efforts involving chemistry and materials science with an underlying interest in advanced concepts for energy storage, conversion and transport.
