These surveys are proving to be extremely valuable to help us improve the operations and engineering here at Birck. We plan to regularly answer a subset of the inquiries and suggestions in the Friday newsletter. Nikon Microscope Calibrations: Bill Rowe and Mike Courtney checked the calibrations on the Nikon microscopes this week. In the programs they have labeled the calibrations 5x Calib 2/21/14, 10x Calib 2/21/14, etc. They have verified the calibrations for each lens on each system, and they will check calibrations each Monday and record the results. If a lens needs recalibration they will then change the calibration data in the log they're keeping. Also, the Nomarski filters are all located at the microscopes. Please be careful with the Nomarski filters and make sure you store them in the plastic box when not in use. Resist Thickness Control: Mike posted the spin speed curves for AZ 1518 and AZ 9260 in the spinner solvent hoods. Aligner Optics: We're obtaining quotes to upgrade the optics and tune-up the MJB aligners. One consideration is to eliminate the split field on the MJB3_1 . . . we would certainly like input from the user group on this idea. Thanks again for the feedback, keep the suggestions coming. Ron

Please see this new release that explains that it is recommended - but not required - that you have a buddy present when working after hours in the cleanroom or laboratories if you are not using an acid hood. Intern Position The Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) would like to temporarily employ an intern student to work for up to 20h per week in a variety of exciting communications/publicity projects. The student will interact with the leadership team, faculty, staff, and students working in the center as well as other parts of the campus. Analytical skills to collect and interpret data from a variety of resources such as on-line publication records, proposal records from the Sponsored Programs Office, and others are required. The student should also be able to work and effectively/efficiently interact with the BNC leadership team, faculty, graduate students, and others to gather information, design, and create communication materials for web, print, social media, and video dissemination. Strong skills with Illustrator-Photoshop-like products, PowerPoint, Word, webpage software, and social media software. Excellent communication skills are a plus. The student will be employed on a per-hour/bi-weekly basis at a rate of $10/hour and the position is available immediately. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, hazardous gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 9. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. No one will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 9. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. At the same time Physical Facilities electrical department will be completing major modification to the isolation grounding system in all general laboratories. Outlets in the laboratory with a label starting with "N" will be powered down 8 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 9. Please move any tools requiring power from the "N" outlets to the outlets starting with "S" during the previous week. It is anticipated that the building and most process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 9. Please check Coral for equipment status and availability. Time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurement is a contactless and quick measurement method, and therefore one of the key metrics available to determine the minority-carrier lifetime in the absorber layer of photovoltaic devices. However, when a measurement is performed on a device, in addition to carrier lifetime, the TRPL signal is affected by multiple factors including drift, diffusion and interface recombination. Deconvolution of these factors and interpretation of results is often difficult.Numerical simulations are used to analyze carrier dynamics after a sample is illuminated with a short light pulse. Simulations can determine how material parameters such as doping and defect density at the interface and bulk, as well as experimental conditions such as wavelength, illumination intensity and spatial distribution of photo-generated carriers affect the measured result.A new formalism that enables greater insight into which factors dominate the TRPL decay dynamics was developed. By breaking down the carrier dynamics into drift, diffusion, and recombination terms this formalism can point which physical factors dominate the decay dynamics under various conditions and at different times during the decay. Using this mechanism, it was found that in a typical CdTe device under typical experimental conditions used in our laboratories, the faster part of the decay is dominated by drift and diffusion of carriers, while the slower part is dominated by carrier recombination. >> >> Bio >> Dr. Ana Kanevce received a Ph.D in Physics at Colorado State University doing characterization and modeling on thin-film solar cells. Since 2007 she has been a member of the Electro-Optical Characterization Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Her research is concentrated on different PV technologies, including silicon heterojunction solar cells, multijunction solar cells based on III-V materials, and thin-film polycrystalline solar cells with Cu(In,Ga)Se2, Cu2(Zn,Sn)Se4 and CdTe absorbers. >>
