Postdoctoral Position Postdoctoral Positions in MEMS/NEMS National Institute of Standards and Technology Postdoctoral researchers are sought for the following projects. Optical Characterization of RF MEMS/NEMS - Advanced optical techniques are being developed to measure the motion of RF MEMS/NEMS with bandwidth and resolution expected to exceed 10 GHz and 1 pm, respectively. These techniques will be used to characterize device performance, investigate resonator dynamics at very high frequencies, and validate device physics models. Nanoelectromechanical Resonators - The technical and fundamental limitations of nanoelectromechanical resonators are being investigated experimentally, particularly with respect to energy dissipation, optimal vibrational modes, transduction efficiency, and nonlinear dynamics. Several NEMS resonator platforms are being developed to support this research, including electrostatic and electrothermal resonators with metal, silicon, and graphene structural components. Optomechanical Accelerometers - A self-calibrating optomechanical accelerometer with nano-g resolution is being develop for applications requiring exceptional performance and metrology-grade traceability, including inertial navigation and seismology. Requirements: Applicants must have a Ph.D., or plan to receive a Ph.D. by August 2014, in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, applied physics, or equivalent. Additionally, applicants should have expertise in two or more of the following areas: MEMS/NEMS fabrication (particularly electron beam lithography, deep silicon etching, and wafer bonding); optics and lasers; mechanics and dynamics; and precision measurements. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, hazardous gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 9. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. No one will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 9. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. At the same time Physical Facilities electrical department will be completing major modification to the isolation grounding system in all general laboratories. Outlets in the laboratory with a label starting with “N” will be powered down 8 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 9. Please move any tools requiring power from the “N” outlets to the outlets starting with “S” during the previous week. Urgent: Missing High Definition TV Monitor

Dear All Birck Residents & Users, We are in the process of installing 3 large HD TV monitors around the facility to provide news updates, general content, and information of interest and relevance to Birck residents, users, and visitors. Two 60" monitors were stored in a vacant locked office, BRK 1021, for the last few months. Now only one of those monitors is in that office, and we're seeking any information regarding who may have borrowed or used the missing monitor for some reason. If you have knowledge of who may have taken this monitor please let me know as soon as possible. If we haven't located the monitor by Monday, March 31st we will presume the monitor has been stolen and involve the Purdue police department. Thank you very much for your immediate attention to this. New feedback system at BNC - Cleanroom phase - starts next week

Dear all, Our Birck Nanotechnology Center supports a large number of users working in a diverse set of research projects. Our goal is to always keep improving the environment for existing users and support an attractive and collaborative laboratory for new ones. In an effort to accelerate our pace doing these, we are starting for the first time a feedback system with the following three main goals: 1. Everyone using the facility may provide feedback through a quick anonymous feedback survey. 2. We will email active users no more than once or twice per month. However, every user may provide feedback at any time by completing a feedback survey on the web (nano.purdue.edu) starting in April. 3. We will track our performance and address issues on a daily basis and provide reports on a monthly basis. We are starting with a pilot study with the Cleanroom next week. Every time you access a coral-enabled tool in the cleanroom you will be entered into a pool of users to receive an anonymous feedback survey but will only receive it once or twice per month. The survey will be distributed through Qualtrix (please check your junk email folder the first few times for Qualtrix-generated emails) and your data will remain anonymous unless you choose to identify yourself for further discussion. Once we test the system with the Cleanroom, we will expand it to all recharge centers at BNC. We sincerely hope you will spend a couple of minutes filling the survey you may receive. Having an active feedback system is critical in enabling us to provide an outstanding user experience. We are committed to doing this and we thank you for your support in BNC. I would also like to sincerely thank the following BNC individuals who worked hard several weeks creating and testing this system (alphabetically): Heather Anthrop, Donna Brown, John Coy, and Ron Reger. Thank you also to SPS for sharing their experience/expertise and to everyone who tested the system and provided feedback and comments in the design and implementation stages. Friday, March 21st at 3:30 pm Birck atrium Desiree White-Schenk The Design of Silica Nanoparticles of Oxidative Stress Attenuation in Nurons Acrolein, a very reactive aldehyde, is a culprit in the biochemical cascade after primary, mechanical spinal cord injury (SCI), which leads to the destruction of tissue initially unharmed, referred to as "secondary injury". Additionally, in models of multiple sclerosis (MS) and some clinical research, acrolein levels are significantly increased. Due to its ability to make more copies of itself in the presence of tissue via lipid peroxidation, researchers believe that acrolein plays a role in the increased destruction of the central nervous system in both SCI and MS. Hydralazine, an FDA-approved hypotensive drug, has been shown to scavenge acrolein, but its side effects and short half-life at the appropriate dose for acrolein scavenging must be improved for beneficial clinical translation. Therefore, a nanomedical approach has been designed using silica nanoparticles as a porous delivery vehicle hydralazine. The silica particles are formed in a one-step method that incorporates poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG), a stealth molecule, directly onto the nanoparticles. As an additional avenue for study, a natural product in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), has been explored for its ability to react with acrolein, disabling its reactive capabilities. Upon demonstration of attenuating acrolein, EGCG's delivery may also be improved using the nanomedical approach. The current work exposes the potential of using silica nanoparticles as a delivery vehicle and EGCG's antioxidant capabilities in B35 neuroblastoma cells exposed to acrolein. We also measure nanotoxicity to individual rat neurons using high-throughput image scanning cytometry.
