Please follow the procedures set below: Action item: - Put "S" sticker on your photoresist bottles. - Label photoresist bottle as attached protocol. - If you are using the previous user's bottle, please label with your name. - Keep all the photoresist bottles in spinner hood cabinet or red cabinet between R and S bay. No other place allowed. We are at a point in the cleanroom solvent storage areas that a large quantity of phot-resist bottles are present. With the addition of new users we are asking everyone to place an "S" sticker on the top of the container if you want to keep the material. Labels will be provided in the cleanroom. Photoresists bottles without the "S" label will be disposed of after October 25th. Please label your photoresist bottles properly. The label should include the owner's full name, content, and date to start using. For the name, either full name or short name with Purdue ID. Jut initial is not allowed. I am sending the SOP for photoresist bottle label with label maker. Please do not use the stickers for the bottles "ready for disposal". If you are using the previous users' bottle that already left, please label with your name. Otherwise, we will dispose them. Please put the photoresist bottles in the cabinets under the spinner hoods or red cabinet between R and S bay. Please do not keep the photoresist bottle in your cleanroom storage bin. Dear All, Mark Lundstrom and I invite you to join us for Lon Bell's talk later this morning (11am, MRGN 121). This is the first in a series of talks about thermoelectrics. The next talk will be by Arun Majumdar (former director of ARPA-E) on Nov. 21st. The potentially transformative possibilities of thermoelectric cooling and energy conversion have long been understood, and over the past two decades, the material figure of merit has been increased substantially, but the promise of widely used commercial thermoelectric technologies has not been realized. Fresh perspectives from people outside of the thermoelectric research community are needed. At the same time he commercialized multi $B products including one of the first car seat coolers/heaters for automotive industry. Best regards, -Mark and Ali Opportunities, limitations and challenges to the broad commercialization of Thermoelectric technology Lon Bell CEO Ideal Power Inc. and Co-founder Gentherm and CALSTART Thursday, October 24, 2019 11:00am in MRGN 121 Abstract: Thermoelectric systems hold the promise of solid state heating, cooling an electric power generation without any greenhouse gas emissions or mechanical moving parts. Despite these very attractive features the technology has not been broadly adopted. This talk explores the state of thermoelectrics in light of materials and systems currently available, material properties, design and usage criteria and concludes with prospects for future broader commercialization. Bio: Currently, Dr. Bell is engaged with several emerging, technology driven companies that are characterized by the potential to have global economic impact, address long term societal needs and create strong IP positions. Bell is also a Chair of the External Advisory Board for the California Institute of Technology's Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Bell founded Amerigon in 1991 (now Gentherm, NASDAQ: THRM). Gentherm is a $1B global leader in supplying high quality thermal management products to the automotive and commercial markets. Gentherm's automotive products include climate seats that provide both heating and cooling, EV battery thermal management systems, heated steering wheels, and heated and cooled storage bins. In 1991, Bell was a cofounder of CALSTART and its first president. CALSTART is a California based non-profit member-supported organization of more than 140 firms, fleets and agencies dedicated to supporting a growing high-tech, clean transportation industry with goals to help clean the air, create jobs, cut imported oil and reduce global warming emissions. As a founder and its first president, Bell led CALSTART's formation and initiated the process of transferring green aerospace technologies into the transportation sector. Bell served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at Michigan State University's Energy Frontier Research Center, a multi-university consortium conducting fundamental research in solid state energy conversion technologies. He served in a similar role for the University of California at Santa Barbara's Institute for Energy Efficiency. He has authored more than 40 publications in the areas of thermodynamics of thermoelectric systems, automotive crash sensors, and other electronic and electromechanical devices. He has been granted over 100 patents for his inventions. Five clusters of Bell's inventions have gone into mass production and dominated their target markets, generating over two billion US Dollars in sales. Bell received a bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 1962, a Master's degree in Rocket Propulsion in 1963, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 1968, all from the California Institute of Technology.

Waimin is a 2nd year Ph.D student in Materials Engineering. His research focuses on developing biosensors targeted for many applications such as agriculture, food packaging, microfluidics, and bioreactors. He works with WHIN in characterizing nitrate sensors for deployment in agricultural fields across the Wabash region as well as developed an impedimetric microbial activity sensor capable of detecting live bacteria in situ. This issue has to be fixed in order to safety power down switchboard #1 and fix the original bus duct issues. Purdue Campus high voltage crew and electrical shops are currently trying to figure out how to fix the safety issue to complete repairs to the original bus duct. The inspect and repairs on the other switchboard #2 showed lose grounding connections and several of the main bolts required tighten back to original torque settings. Based on this information we feel that switchboard #1 needs to be shut down again to complete repairs. Our hope is to finish switchboard #1 this week if possible but we am waiting on feedback from the Purdue high voltage crew and electrical shops to see if this is possible. If not then another shutdown for Switchboard #1 requiring to power off all research equipment will be needed. Please note that the building will remain closed till the end of the week to complete our normal preventive maintenance activates. We are sorry for the inconvenience but this issue is outside of our control. I will sent a updated once more information is available. Thank you, Mark Voorhis Building Manager BNC Preventative Maintenance Closure & Research Equipment Power Outage: (See Attachments) The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a closure involving major electrical repairs and completion of our semi-annual preventive maintenance from October 14 through October 18, 2019. There will be a major electrical power outage involving all research equipment in the center. During our electrical bus duct failure back in February is was discovered that main power to all research equipment has the same issue that caused the failure in February. ELECTRICAL work is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2019. EVERY GENERAL LAB, MAIN CLEANROOM & BIO CLEANROOM AREAS WILL LOOSE POWER TO RESEARCH EQUIPMENT DURING THIS TIME. ALSO ALL BUILDING WIDE MAJOR UTILITIES WILL BE LOST INCLUDING Compressed Air, Process Vacuum, Process Cooling Water, Ultra Pure Water, Acid Waste System, & ETC. Research equipment on UPS or generator power will not be affected. Power will be lost to all conference rooms and office areas as well so please plan accordingly to safely power down all office computers and electronic devises in your offices prior to the outage. Attached is the electrical shutdown sequence. Please plan accordingly to secure you research equipment and office computers. All air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 14 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 18 to complete our preventative maintenance activities. SiC is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a high critical field, making it an exciting material for power electronic devices. SiC MOSFETs are now commercially available, but do not yet achieve their full potential. We are approaching this problem from several directions, including a radical new device geometry inspired by modern FinFETs, as well as a submicron, fully self-aligned trench UMOSFET, as well as atomic layer deposited gate dielectrics. Notification of Early Cleanroom Shutdown

Please see this message from Mark Voorhis: Dear BNC Users, We have been dealing with the serious building controls issue since 10PM yesterday evening with the cleanroom heating system that could shut down our cleanroom research and operation. After detailed investigation and troubleshooting we need to order some unique control valve repair parts that we have not needed since we have open the center 14+ years. We are using contingency plans for our pre heating system to keep the cleanroom operational - but we are on the edge - when outdoor ambient temperatures reach freezing levels where uncontrollable safety sensors can shut down all makeup air systems that is critical to cleanroom operations causing the cleanroom to go super negative. For this reason we plan to shut down research and process in the cleanroom tonight at 12<x-apple-data-detectors://1> midnight. Please make appropriate plans to secure your research that is sensitive to airborne contamination. All bulk gases and nitrogen to dry boxes in the center will remain operational with no interruption from now throughout next week. We are sorry for this unscheduled interruption and thank you for your cooperation. Check out Jerry's whole article HERE<https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/birck/news/index.php?view=3881> BNC Preventative Maintenance Closure & Research Equipment Power Outage: (See Attachments) The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a closure involving major electrical repairs and completion of our semi-annual preventive maintenance from October 14 through October 18, 2019. There will be a major electrical power outage involving all research equipment in the center. During our electrical bus duct failure back in February is was discovered that main power to all research equipment has the same issue that caused the failure in February. ELECTRICAL work is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2019. EVERY GENERAL LAB, MAIN CLEANROOM & BIO CLEANROOM AREAS WILL LOOSE POWER TO RESEARCH EQUIPMENT DURING THIS TIME. ALSO ALL BUILDING WIDE MAJOR UTILITIES WILL BE LOST INCLUDING Compressed Air, Process Vacuum, Process Cooling Water, Ultra Pure Water, Acid Waste System, & ETC. Research equipment on UPS or generator power will not be affected. Power will be lost to all conference rooms and office areas as well so please plan accordingly to safely power down all office computers and electronic devises in your offices prior to the outage. Attached is the electrical shutdown sequence. Please plan accordingly to secure you research equipment and office computers. All air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 14 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 18 to complete our preventative maintenance activities. SiC is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a high critical field, making it an exciting material for power electronic devices. SiC MOSFETs are now commercially available, but do not yet achieve their full potential. We are approaching this problem from several directions, including a radical new device geometry inspired by modern FinFETs, as well as a submicron, fully self-aligned trench UMOSFET, as well as atomic layer deposited gate dielectrics.
