[cid:image003.jpg@01CFD8AC.2F191060] Dr. Dana Weinstein Massachusetts Institute of Technology RF Solid-State MEMS Resonators Monday, October 6, 2014 10:00 a.m. Birck Nanotechnology Center Room 1001 Abstract Semiconductor micro-electromechanical (MEM) resonators, with quality factors (Q) often exceeding 104 can provide a high performance, low-power, compact alternative to electrical components in wireless communication and signal processing. The seamless integration of these MEM devices in standard IC technology is particularly attractive due to reduced size, weight, and power, reduced parasitics leading to higher operational frequencies, and relaxed constraints on impedance matching networks. In this talk, I will discuss the design innovations in transduction and acoustic confinement that enabled the demonstration of solid-state MEMS resonators in standard Si CMOS and GaN MMIC technologies. This work has led to the highest f.Q products in both Si and GaN reported to date, to record-breaking resonance frequencies in Si, and to the first monolithic MEMS oscillators in GaN. I will discuss the methods used to achieve this performance, including active electromechanical transduction, 2D and 3D phononic crystal design, and modeling used to optimize these unique structures. Bio Dana Weinstein is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, and a member of the Microsystems Technology Laboratories. Dana received her B.A. in Physics and Astrophysics from UC Berkeley in 2004, then moved to Cornell University where she completed her Ph.D. in Applied Physics in 2009, working on multi-GHz Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). Her research group at MIT, the HybridMEMS Lab, focuses on the development of novel MEMS-enhanced electron devices and systems for high performance, low power consumption, programmable electromechanical signal processors operating in real time at carrier frequencies. Dana is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, the DARPA Young Faculty Award, the Intel Early Career Award, and the IEEE IEDM Roger A. Haken Best Paper Award. Alert Test Bicycles NSAC Coffee Hour Preventive Maintenance Seminar Update on Microscopes Workshop Alert Test Purdue University will test its emergency notification system, including sirens, at 10 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 30). Bicycles Warnings being issued for parked bicycles in disrepair, improperly parked or abandoned -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Physical Facilities Grounds Department this week is marking with warnings all parked bicycles that are damaged, appear not to be roadworthy, or have been abandoned or parked improperly. The guidelines outlined below will be put in place beginning next week. Bicycles may be impounded immediately for the following reasons: * Parked improperly (i.e., anywhere other than a bicycle rack). * To complete emergency project work, construction or to facilitate necessary repairs. Bicycle parking on the academic campus is intended to be temporary only. The Grounds Department will give 14 days' notice before impounding bicycles for the following reasons: * Abandoned (e.g., rusted chain, deflated tires, leaves and debris present, obviously not in use). * Damaged or in disrepair (e.g., bent wheels, handlebars, missing parts). * Parked and unmoved in the same location for more than 14 days. Individuals who keep a bicycle on campus are advised to check their bicycle to be sure that no warning has been issued. Individuals who suspect that their bicycles have been removed by the Grounds Department may contact the department to retrieve their bicycles. If a bicycle has been registered with the Purdue University Police Department (PUPD), the Grounds Department will work with PUPD to attempt to notify the owner. If a bicycle is not retrieved within 60 days, then it is sent to the Purdue Warehouse and Surplus Store to be sold. NSAC Coffee Hour Please join NSAC for coffee hour on Friday, October 3rd at 3:30 pm in the atrium for a presentation by Tejasvi Parupudi. Preventive Maintenance Shut Down Notice October 13 - October 17 The Brick Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 13 through October 17, 2014. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, hazardous toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 13 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 17. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. No one will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 9 a.m. Monday, October 13 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 17. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 17. Please check Coral for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. ? Our three systems (two in the cleanroom and one in Lab 2261) became infected with malicious software and we had no other option but to upgrade the computers, operating systems, imaging software, and one camera. All the software, computers and camera have arrived, and here is the current status of the upgrades: Lab 2261- Olympus microscope with new Spot 5.1 software and computer is calibrated and ready for use. Cleanroom- The Nikon L150's on the table both have new software and computers, and they're calibrated & ready for use. The left unit also has a new camera as the old camera was incompatible with the new computer and software. (For now you need to log in with your career account. They both are going to be up as a kiosk computers during the fall shutdown in two weeks.) Thanks for your patience and understanding. Dr. Candace Su-Jung Tsai Sept. 29, 2014 @ 2:00pm, BRK 1001 Nanotechnology Health and Safety Research and Practice Dr. Candace Su-Jung Tsai is an Assistant Professor in Industrial Hygiene at Purdue University. She received her Doctorate in Cleaner Production and Occupational Hygiene at UMass Lowell, she also received MS in Chemical Engineering and MS in Management Science and worked many years in the industry. Led by Dr. Tsai, the EHS research group at CHN where she served as the research manager prior to her appointment at Purdue has been in the forefront of nanoparticle EHS research including occupational and environmental exposures, the safe practices to be followed and engineering control strategies to minimize the exposure. Her publications including the performance of laboratory fume hoods when handling nanopowders and the twin screw extrusion of nanocomposites are the first such papers in the peer-reviewed literature. She serves as the executive officer in the Nanotechnology Working Group of American Industrial Hygiene Association. She has been involved in many panels and committees and she has been invited to give numerous seminars and conference keynote speech in the U.S. and overseas. She will present the current knowledge and status of nanoEHS research and what we need to know about nanoEHS with Mr. Steve Jurss, Safety Officer. Dear All: The Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (NSAC) is currently accepting volunteers who would like to present their research in the BNC atrium during NSAC's coffee hour (every Friday at 3:30PM). In the diverse and rapidly developing field of Nanotechnology, it is useful for researchers to have a broad exposure beyond their immediate research projects. To ensure this, NSAC organizes a coffee hour session on Fridays during which time researchers (grad/undergrad students, post docs, staff scientists/engineers) at Birck with different research backgrounds present their research to other students, faculty and staff, over a cup of coffee. Cleanroom Flu Shot Demonstration Presentation Preventive Maintenance Seminar Cleanroom This week we started our cleanroom certification testing using an outside company to measure the efficiency of each HEPA and ULPA filter. Part of this process involves challenging and testing all the filters for damage or particle leaks. The certification company found we had a surprising number of damaged filters that require patching and retesting. The process involves using a silicone caulk at the location of the HEPA leak. The silicone caulk will generate a vinegar odor in the cleanroom for couple of days after the patch is applied and until outgassing stops. We hope the vinegar odor in the cleanroom will slowly dissipate over the weekend. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Flu Shot Why put up with the flu? You feel rotten. BNC Management Seminar Prof. Tongcang Li Optomechanics of levitated dielectric particles OSA Purdue Student Chapter Seminar Series September 22nd at 5:00 pm in Birck 1001 I will first introduce basic concepts in cavity optomechanics, which explores the interaction between photons and mechanical motion. Then, I will review recent works in optomechanics of levitated particles, including our own contributions. Optically trapped microspheres and nanoparticles in vacuum provide an ideal system for ultrasensitive force detection and studying macroscopic quantum mechanics. An optically trapped particle in vacuum has an ultrahigh mechanical quality factor as it is well-isolated from the thermal environment. Its oscillation frequency can be tuned in real time by changing the power of the trapping laser. Furthermore, an optically trapped particle in vacuum may rotate freely, a unique property that does not exist in clamped mechanical oscillators.
