Nitrogen Issues at Birck

Dear All Birck Colleagues, Today we ran out of liquid nitrogen at Birck due to the severe weather which caused travel and delivery problems with our LN2 supplier. Gaseous nitrogen is produced from the LN2 so we ran low on gaseous utility nitrogen pressure as well. This caused issues with the UPW system and other valves which rely on utility nitrogen. Birck staff and trades we were able to temporarily plumb clean dry air as a substitution for the utility nitrogen, and return pressure levels to normal. We had to temporarily close the cleanroom tonight until the entire staff can get to work and fully assess the situation and implications of using CDA in this way. We will know more and have a short-term direction tomorrow. The real solution is to fill our LN2 tank, which will hopefully happen this week when Linde gets caught up with their delivery schedule. Failure to do so will result in suspension from the labs and cleanroom. Stephen E. Jurss CIH, CSP Safety Manager Cleanroom Chemical Exhaust Shut Down To add chemical exhaust for the future laboratories, a required shut down of our solvent and acid exhaust systems for the BIO cleanroom and main cleanroom are needed. This interruption will require shut down of all toxic gases, cleanroom fume hoods, and cleanroom chemical research equipment. The general laboratories will not be affected by this interruption unless research requires toxic gases. The exhaust shut down is planned for January 7, 2014 from 7 AM to 4PM. The exhaust fans will remain running but the static pressure will drop below safety limits when the sheet metal contractors cut into the main chemical exhaust ducts. Travel The IRS recently announced new standard mileage rates when using a personal vehicle for business reasons. Rates are based on the fixed and variable costs of operating a vehicle. Effective for travel on or after January 1, 2014, the privately owned vehicle mileage rate will change from 56.5 cents per mile to 56 cents per mile. University Tax Office 12/03/2013 In preparation for the distribution of 2013 W-2 forms to Purdue employees, the University Tax Department urges employees to review their home addresses in Employee Self-Service (ESS) by Dec. 31. All W-2s will be mailed in January, and a current address will help ensure prompt delivery. Any W-2 returned to Purdue due to an undeliverable address may incur a wait time for reissuance. ESS is accessible to employees with their Purdue career account and password after logging into the OnePurdue Portal.
