Spring PM Shutdown - May 1, 2017 - May 5, 2017 The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown May 1 through May 5, 2017. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, May 1 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 5. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, May 1 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 5. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 5. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. Week of Oct 16, 2017 Week of April 30, 2018 Week of Oct 15, 2018 Week of April 29, 2019 User Information Dear Scifres Researchers & User Community, Last year was a record year for new cleanroom users, with over one hundred new cleanroom users joining our facility. However, as our cleanroom user base grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to allocate totes for new users. Over the next few months Birck is going to be adding one hundred new user totes to meet storage demands and accommodate future growth. The planned tote expansion will also be accompanied by some policy changes in how the space is used: * Items stored on the tops of tote racks need to be labeled with a name and the current year. Items not labeled appropriately will be removed from the cleanroom during the Spring shutdown and disposed of. * Glassware will no longer be kept on the top of the tote racks. Glassware can be stored either in user totes or the large glassware bins on the east side of the cleanroom. Feel free to direct any concerns or questions about the tote rack policy changes to Sean Rinehart at srinehar(a)purdue.edu. Chemical-Mechanical Polishing Tim Miller is assessing the CMP capabilities at the BNC and is asking for input from the faculty as to their current and future needs for Chemical-Mechanical Polishing. Essentially, we would like our engineering staff to help you achieve consistent and repeatable results by regularly running and characterizing your critical fabrication processes in the cleanroom. This could have multiple benefits: 1. Improved quality control and repeatability 2. Provides early warning for process and equipment problems 3. Effectively creating and maintaining process database and lab memory 4. Active engagement of engineering staff into research 5. Lowering fabrication cost and time for everyone This effort will be successful only with active participation of faculty and their research group. As a first step, we would like to invite each group to document the steps for a couple of critical processes they follow on a regular basis. For example, it could be a lithography process (document PR, recipes, measurement method), or an oxide deposition process (document sample preparation, deposition recipe, measurement method). In the beginning students/postdocs will be training engineering staff to run these processes. In the long run the staff members will run these on a regular basis and maintain a database. This will be a dynamic program with new processes being added and obsolete ones being retired on a regular basis. Priority will be given to processes that benefit multiple groups. Please send these processes to Ron and I by March 24, 2017 in a ppt format. After this, we will have a meeting to group these and discuss a plan to get started. We would very much welcome any thoughts and ideas you have on how to make this successful and improve everyone's fabrication results at Birck. Update on campus steam. It appears that several boilers shutdown for unexplained reasons at the wade power plant allowing our incoming steam pressure to drop from 125psi to 15 psi in 30 minutes. Physical Facilities has restarted 7 boilers trying to recover steam pressure across campus. Our building is currently stable waiting for the steam pressure to return to normal. At this time we do not expect any interruption to ambient controls or hazardous processes. Building systems should recover to normal operation in the next 2-3 hours given the present conditions. The loss of steam during cold weather may result in shutting down all cleanroom and general laboratory air handling units losing temperature and humidity ambient control. This may also shut down all chemical exhaust systems and hazardous processes. We have implemented contingency plans to conserve steam the best we can. These changes may lead to the cleanroom going negative allowing dirty air to be pulled into the cleanroom so plan accordingly to protect any contamination sensitive research inside the cleanroom. I will update you more once I get more information from Physical Facilities on the condition of the main campus boilers or conditions in the building deteriorate.
