The BNC Monday Memo BNC News
week of March 1, 2010
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Nanodays Callout on Thursday, March 4 at 4 PM in the Birck Kitchen . Ice cream, hot cocoa, and other refreshments will be provided.
NanoDays! April 2 and 3, 2010 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: graduate students and faculty needed to support this activity. [ More ] Please contact Caitlin Burger to see how you may be involved with this activity.
ISS news: According to the ISS department, faculty should plan ahead if they anticipate hiring international faculty or staff who need H-1B sponsorship. ISS recommends that all H-1B petitions with August start dates be submitted no later than April 1st to allow for adequate processing time. Cases submitted after that date may not meet the hiring deadline if we continue to experience lengthy delays with the DOL. Even with premium processing service we are anticipating a processing time of 4 months from start to finish. It is therefore critical that faculty plan ahead when hiring international faculty and staff.

NIH Shared Instrumentation Grant Program
The National Institutes of Health recently released their solicitation for the Shared Instrumentation Grant Program ( http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-10-082.html ).
PROGRAM SUMMARY
Although this program is not limited by the number of proposals an institution can submit, the applications must be for different types of equipment . Therefore, we ask those interested in applying under this program to e-mail OVPRlimited(a)purdue.edu and identify the equipment you are interested in, what it will be used for, where it will be housed, and names/departments of those who will share it.
Please respond by March 1 so we can confirm there are no overlaps in equipment requests.

Dear BNC Colleague-
As many of you know, I have been a candidate for the position of provost for the past two weeks. I was offered and accepted the position Wednesday afternoon. Although this is an unexpected twist in my career track, I see it as a challenge and as an opportunity to give back. It has been a privilege working with you for the past three years in the BNC. This is, no doubt, the greatest research environment I have experienced. I will certainly stay involved, even after the transition (details TBD). Thank you for your efforts to make the BNC community strong, and the BNC a pleasant work environment.
Best Regards,
Tim
