SiC is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a high critical field, making it an exciting material for power electronic devices. SiC MOSFETs are now commercially available, but do not yet achieve their full potential. Our group is approaching this problem from several directions, including a new device geometry inspired by modern FinFETs, the adaptation of IGBTs and super-junctions for use in SiC devices, as well as alternative gate insulator fabrication methods. 3D Cell Culture for Anticancer Drug Research Workshop - December 11 & 12 2017

Dear Fellow Scientists, The new workshop on 3D cell culture models for projects related to the use or the development of anticancer drugs is scheduled on December 11 – 12, 2017. The anticancer drug testing workshop will include a lecture on the basics of drug testing in vitro and the different 3D cell culture systems to produce preinvasive and invasive tumors, classroom exercise for data analysis and presentation, and hands-on practical with tumors in culture based on different drug screening assays. The workshop will benefit those who are new to the use of anticancer drugs in vitro as well as more seasoned researchers wishing to place anticancer drug related projects in a physiologically relevant context. Participation in the workshop requires having REM biosafety training and bloodborne pathogen training, sufficient knowledge in 3D cell culture or 3D3C 3D cell culture training workshop. The course fee for the workshop is $350. The registration deadline is November 17, 2017. Visualization of 3D Cell Culture Training Workshop - November 16 & 17 2017

Hello Birck colleagues: I’m forwarding on a description for a class I’m teaching next spring on small-scale fluid mechanics (actually it’s called micro/nanofluidics but I don’t want to get too hung up on any particular length scale). We look at how and why systems behave differently as they become small, in particular force scaling and continuum breakdown. Sounds like Birck stuff, doesn’t it? 3D3C Upcoming Workshop - 3D Cell Culture for Anticancer Drug Research

Dear Fellow Scientists, This December, the 3D3C facility will organize a new workshop on 3D cell culture models for projects related to the use or the development of anticancer drugs. Increasing literature reports that 3D cell culture of tumors is a more physiologically relevant in vitro model than the conventional monolayer culture. Using 3D cell culture models prior to in vivo work is predicted to boost the success rate to identify new drugs for cancer therapy and ways to circumvent resistance. However, there is a breadth of possibilities to produce tumors in culture and some techniques are better than others to recapitulate specific cell behaviors necessary for the drugs of interest. The anticancer drug testing workshop will include a lecture on the basics of drug testing in vitro and the different 3D cell culture systems to produce preinvasive and invasive tumors, classroom exercise for data analysis and presentation, and hands-on practical with tumors in culture based on different drug screening assays. The workshop will benefit those who are new to the use of anticancer drugs in vitro as well as more seasoned researchers wishing to place anticancer drug related projects in a physiologically relevant context.
