Dear colleagues, On behalf of the Network for Computational Nanotechnology, a resource supported by the National Science Foundation, we would like to announce the 2011 Nano-Biophotonics Summer School (NBSS11) to take place at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, May 23- June 3, 2011. This is a two-week event aimed at training graduate students with research interests at the interface between optics, biomedicine, and nanotechnology. The School combines lectures and presentations with hands-on computational labs, delivered by experts in the field. The tuition and lodging are free for qualified students who apply by April 1st. Please note that TUESDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2011, the card readers for FIRST FLOOR EAST LABORATORIES will be shut down from 10:00-10:10 AM. You will not be able to swipe into the labs during that time - please plan to enter the lab prior to 10:00 AM or after 10:10 AM. Aamer Mahmood is a Staff Scientist

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Aamer Mahmood is promoted to Staff Scientist - Nanofabrication and Characterization. This designation better describes Aamer's role in the BNC and recognizes his collaborative role in research. He is often a coauthor on papers reporting this research and is authorized as a Principal Investigator in research projects. Aamer received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and is well known for his expertise in MEMS processing and device characterization. The author of 15 refereed publications, his expertise is sought out to develop new and novel processes for a variety of customers. Please join me in congratulating Aamer on his promotion to Staff Scientist. He will continue to report to Ron Reger, Process and Equipment Manager. John John R. Atomic Force Microscopy Workshop / February 17, 2011

The Birck Nanotechnology Center at Purdue University will be hosting an Asylum Research Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) Workshop on February 17, 2011. The workshop will include lectures and equipment/imaging demonstrations for both life science applications and electrical characterization of materials. The AFM Workshop is open to current AFM researchers looking to learn more about AFM techniques and who want to “ask the experts”, as well as those new to AFM that want to learn how AFM can be used in their own research. A small registration fee of $30 will be charged to cover lunch and coffee breaks.
