Cleanroom and Laboratories Open

The preventive maintenance shutdown has been completed successfully and ahead of schedule, due to the efforts of Mark Voorhis, the Engineering Staff, and the Physical Facilities trades. The cleanroom and laboratories are now open for operation. Some equipment is still shut down for maintenance, or is in the process of being started back up. Please check Coral for equipment status. The color machine in BRK 1222 will be moved to the second floor atrium area, just west of Birck 2001. The black and white machine in BRK 2020 will be moved to BRK 1222. An ECN training session to show users how to connect to the newly located machines will be held on Thursday, October 8, at 11:00AM, in Birck 1001 . Several members of the staff and the Birck Ambassadors are planning on attending this session to be prepared to assist users in the connection. If you are interested in learning for yourself, please plan on attending. BUILDING TEMPERATURES Birck offices and the atrium may be cool on the morning on October 12 , from 6:00AM to 11:00AM. Depending on the outside weather conditions and the length of repairs to the system, we may see temperatures as low as 55° to 60°. Please plan for warm clothing, as needed. SHUTDOWN The semiannual shutdown of the BNC will take place Tuesday through Friday, October 12-15, 2010. The CLEANROOM and LABS will be closed at 12:01 AM Tuesday morning. If all goes well, it will reopen at 8:00 AM Friday morning. If issues arise, it may be closed for some or all of Friday, October 15. Coral Unavailable on Saturday, October 9

Dear Birck Users, Due to the complete electrical shutdown of MSEE on Saturday, October 9, from 7:30 - ~ 4:30 (per the attached memo from ECN) we at the Birck Nanotechnology Center will experience a disruption of Coral services for the same time period (the Coral servers are located within MSEE). THIS SHOULD NOT AFFECT RESEARCH TOOL AVAILABILITY HERE AT BIRCK. Because Coral will be down during this time period we will require all users of Coral-interfaced tools to manually fill out log sheets near the equipment. This manual logging will begin Saturday morning and continue until power has been restored to MSEE and the Coral servers brought back on-line.
