Dr. Noel D'Souza Spintronics Research Scientist Candidate July 22, 2015 @ 1:30pm in BRK 1001 Applications of 4-State Nanomagnetic Logic using Multiferroic Nanomagnets and Experiments on 2-State Multiferroic Nanomagnetic Logic Abstract Nanomagnetic logic, incorporating logic bits in the magnetization orientations of single-domain nanomagnets, has garnered attention as an alternative to transistor-based logic due to its non-volatility and unprecedented energy-efficiency. The energy efficiency of this scheme is determined by the method used to flip the magnetization orientations of the nanomagnets in response to one or more inputs and produce the desired output. Unfortunately, the large dissipative losses that occur when nanomagnets are switched with a magnetic field or spin-transfer-torque inhibit the promised energy-efficiency. Another technique offering superior energy efficiency, "straintronics", involves the application of a voltage to a piezoelectric layer to generate a strain which is transferred to an elastically coupled magnetrostrictive layer, causing magnetization rotation. The functionality of this scheme can be enhanced further by introducing magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the magnetostrictive layer, thereby generating four stable magnetization states (instead of the two stable directions produced by shape anisotropy in ellipsoidal nanomagnets). Numerical simulations were performed to implement a low-power universal logic gate (NOR) using such 4-state magnetostrictive/piezoelectric nanomagnets (Ni/PZT) by clocking the piezoelectric layer with a small electrostatic potential (~0.2 V) to switch the magnetization of the magnetic layer. Unidirectional and reliable logic propagation in this system was also demonstrated theoretically. Besides doubling the logic density (4-state versus 2-state) for logic applications, these four-state nanomagnets can be exploited for higher order applications such as image reconstruction and recognition in the presence of noise, associative memory and neuromorphic computing. Experimental work in strain-based switching has been limited to magnets that are multi-domain or magnets where strain moves domain walls. In this work, we also demonstrate strain-based switching in 2-state single-domain ellipsoidal magnetostrictive nanomagnets of lateral dimensions ~200 nm fabricated on a piezoelectric substrate (PMN-PT) and studied using Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM). A nanomagnetic Boolean NOT gate and unidirectional bit information propagation through a finite chain of dipole-coupled nanomagnets are also shown through strain-based "clocking". This is the first experimental demonstration of strain-based switching in nanomagnets and clocking of nanomagnetic logic (Boolean NOT gate), as well as logic propagation in an array of nanomagnets. New Mailroom Employee Please stop by and introduce yourself to our new receiving clerk Kyle Corwin. Kyle just started with us and his hours in BRK 1220 will be 9AM to 1PM Monday - Friday. With Kyle, we will be able to keep the mailroom open over the lunch hour. Outbound Mail & Package Time Change MMDC has changed their mail route again, so you have until 10:00AM before the mail goes out. This means that any packages and mail received by 10:00AM will still go out that day! VB6 The VB6 remains down. Raith/Vistec service has been here this week working on the problem, and additional parts have been ordered from the factory. Citizenship In this week’s survey it was noted that we still occasionally have citizenship challenges, such as users leaving hoods and equipment in disarray. Lab 2031 Chemical Clean-Out Beginning the week of July 20th we will be cleaning out old chemicals from Lab 2031. Low Temperature Chiller Status

All, The chiller repairs were completed one day ahead of schedule and the unit is operational again. Fortunately, the humidity deviation from set point was less severe than anticipated due to the unusually cool weather. Temperature and humidity values for the laboratories, cleanroom, and biocleanroom should be back to normal within the next two hours. Tuesday AM Chiller Update

All, Please be advised that the campus chilled water supply from Wade is running warmer than normal at 45 deg. F. vs. the typical 39 deg. F. We will be calling the chiller operators to see if there is anything they can do to bring the temperature back to normal. Based on the current status of the air handler cooling coils, it appears likely that we may lose temperature control in the labs in addition to the predicted humidity control once our low temperature unit goes offline. It is still running pending Carrier's arrival onsite. This morning's extremely high humidity and warm temperatures are working against us. However, we are hopeful that once this weather front passes both the outside air temperature and humidity will drop as forecast, lessening the impact of the downtime. FW: Second Notification - Low Temperature Chiller Repair

From: Kuhn, Jeffrey G Sent: Tuesday, June 30, 2015 2:55 PM To: BNC Staff Subject: Second Notification - Low Temperature Chiller Repair All, The needed chiller repairs that were communicated last week are now scheduled for Tuesday 7/7/15 through Thursday 7/9/15. As stated earlier, we will not have proper humidity control in the laboratories, cleanroom, or biocleanroom while the chiller is down. Additionally, the testing done this morning is complete. For the test, we shut off the low temperature chilled water to the cleanroom makeup air handlers in order to simulate the chiller being down. Based on the test, we can expect humidity in the cleanroom and biocleanroom to reach as high as 55% - 60% (the normal range is 40% to 50%). Humidity in the laboratories, normally around 40%, could also climb as high as 55% - 60%. There are several important items to note: * The weather forecast for Tuesday through Thursday next week calls for conditions approximately the same as today. If that forecast holds true, then the humidity excursions presented above would be pretty much on target. However, as we all know, weather forecasts that far in the future aren't always accurate. Therefore you should plan for conditions worse than predicted, especially if it is hotter and muggier than it is today. * While our in-house chiller is being repaired, campus chilled water from the Wade power plant will be doing all of the cooling and dehumidification for the entire building. If Wade were to have chilled water issues while our in-house unit is down and incoming water temperature were to rise, then humidity values could go higher than predicted and we may lose temperature control as well. o We will be contacting the management at Wade to inform them of our upcoming chiller repair, and to make sure they do due diligence to keep the campus chilled water flowing into Birck at the proper temperature. * During the downtime, Mark Voorhis and I will be keeping a close eye on dewpoint values in order to ensure there is no condensation that could damage equipment. If we were to approach the calculated dewpoint, then we would raise the temperature set point in order to stay above the dewpoint value, thereby preventing condensation. That chiller is used to maintain humidity setpoints during warm weather. In order to prevent a catastrophic and expensive failure of the chiller's compressors, we must schedule the unit to be down for repair as soon as possible. The repairs will take approximately three (3) days to complete. During that time, we will be unable to properly control humidity in the cleanroom, biocleanroom, and laboratories. It is impossible to predict the severity of the humidity excursion since it will be largely weather dependent. The warmer and more humid the outside air, the more severe the deviation from setpoint will be. We have not yet scheduled the repairs pending feedback from Birck users who will be impacted. If you have any input regarding the timing of the repairs, please let me know as soon as possible since it is vital that we get the repairs underway. I will wait for feedback until Monday 6/29 before scheduling repairs with the contractor. Once I know the dates of the downtime, I will communicate them to you. Please pass this information along to anyone not on this distribution who needs to be aware, and please contact me with your feedback or questions by next Monday.
