Dear all, I would like to provide a quick update on the following items: 1. Posters: we are updating all building and research posters to make sure they are up to date for the October 30th 10-year celebration. Swati (spol(a)purdue.edu<mailto:spol@purdue.edu>) will email you to help you update your posters, if desired, and add new posters as needed. We are also improving the frames to ensure a more professional appearance. 2. We have purchased new display hardware cases with about 40 display spaces. They are located in the atrium and provide an opportunity to display your hardware. Please work with Swati to add the material you like for your research effort. In addition, you can provide a slide describing this material. These will be loaded on an ipad next to the display case. Given the October 30th celebration, it would be great to have posters and hardware displays ready by October 20th. Best Dimitri

E-news for the week of September 21st

VB-6 Update The vacuum and robot communication problems have been resolved, but now the system is having random gun trips. Vistec field service is here with a data logger to find the root cause of this problem, and diagnosis will continue through the weekend. We are hopeful for resolution of the problem by early next week. Please watch the upper atrium display for status updates, and thanks much for your patience. Refrigerator Cleanout Refrigerator in the kitchen will be cleaned out next Thursday Sept 24. Anything not labelled or looking bad will be trashed. Glass container and all. Questions? Contact Nancy 48675, blackn(a)purdue.edu<mailto:blackn@purdue.edu> PM Shut Down Notice 10.19 - 10.23 The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 19 through October 23, 2015. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. No one will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 23. Please check Coral for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. NSAC Coffee Hour

Please join us at 3:30 pm for NSAC coffee hour. This week's presentation will feature Zach Hughes with "A LOW COST WIRELESS UV DOSIMETER FOR OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD MONITORING" Excessive exposure to UV rays from the sun is shown to significantly increase the risk for outdoor workers to develop skin cancer. We demonstrate an ultraviolet-monitoring system that can rapidly and wirelessly report readings from a large number of individuals at once, and can be fabricated at reduced cost. This lowers the entry barrier for employers to be able to detect, quantify, and counteract the risk of UV skin damage for their workers.

Purdue University Surplus Store Purdue University Surplus Store will be moving in October to better serve faculty, staff and students with a convenient campus location at Material Management and Distribution Center (MMDC). To prepare for the move, the store is holding a sale at the current location at 3601 Sagamore Parkway North, Suite K, in Lafayette. The store's moving sale will have several weeks of graduated discounts on all items: Sept. 8-11 - 75% off Sept. 14-18 - All remaining merchandise will be sold for $1. Discover, MasterCard, Visa, check and cash will be accepted for payment. Items must be removed on the day of purchase, and buyers are responsible for loading their own purchases. There are limited quantities of all items. The store is open to the public noon-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Purdue University Surplus Store will suspend operations at its Sagamore Parkway location at 4 p.m. Sept. 18 and open at MMDC at noon Oct. 5. VB-6 The vacuum issue has been solved by replacing a leaky ion pump. The service engineer is here this week addressing an issue with the robot movement/control. We will keep you apprised of the progress. Display Cases You probably have noticed the nice new display cases located in the first-floor atrium. These will feature displays about different research projects and other activities/capabilities within Birck. There are a couple of examples of displays already in the cases, but we have room for many more. As a reminder, please clean up and tidy up your work areas and make sure you label all your experiments in the hoods. New Process Meetings We have the great benefit of having many new users coming to work with us here at Birck, both in the labs and the cleanroom. For those working in the cleanroom please remember to schedule your new user process meeting through Kenny Schwartz, kfschwar(a)purdue.edu<mailto:kfschwar@purdue.edu>. Because of the number of new users it may take a few extra days to schedule your meetings. Valuables Just a reminder that the Birck Nanotechnology Center building is an open campus building, with many people working and visiting here on a daily basis. Please remember to lock your valuables in a safe place when you leave them unattended. VB6 Good news- the VB6 is now in a bakeout. Andrew Dean and Alan Schroeder were able to isolate the leak to ion pump 4 and it's fixtures. A new ion pump has been installed. It was able to pump down to previous good readings. It is now in a bakeout. After the bakout, the gun will have to be run up to 50kV and stabilize, then run up to 100kV and stabilize. The gun alignment will need to be done and new databases made. We are probably looking at the middle to end of next week and the VB6 will be ready for use. Many thanks for your patience while the problems of the pattern generator board, 24V power supply, and vacuum leak was tracked down and fixed. I will give you further updates as we move along in bringing the system back up. It has been a team effort from Raith (Vistec) with John Reilly, Alan Schroeder, Chris Gee and Andrew Dean staying on top of the machine until all the issues were resolved. Many thanks go out to them.
