Welcome Dr. Tim Kwok The Birck Nanotechnology Staff is very pleased to welcome Dr. Tim Kwok as the new 3-D Cell Culture Manager. Tim comes to us most recently from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center where he was a Senior Research Technologist, and he has had a variety of research and academic experiences in cancer research, cancer biology, and radiation biology. Tim holds a PhD in Radiation and Cancer Biology, and has published extensively over the course of his career. Tim’s office is in the Engineering Staff office in 2287C . . . please join us in welcoming Tim to the Birck Nanotechnology Center!

Process Considerations - Low Temperature Chiller Repair Test

All Cleanroom Users, Per the notification below regarding the humidity test tomorrow morning, please be aware that increased humidity in the cleanroom will result in processes that will perform differently. For example, vacuum systems may take longer to pump down due to higher moisture content in a vented chamber, and photoresist processes will have different photo speeds due to moisture content. Please be aware of these potential issues and avoid processes that may be negatively impacted by this test tomorrow morning. The facilities staff will monitor the humidity rise until it reaches steady-state, and then return the cleanroom to humidity control to bring it back to the nominal 45 - 50% level. This test is being done to see where humidity levels stabilize in order to predict what will happen when the low-temperature chiller is taken off-line for its repair later in the summer. The test will begin at 7:30 AM and last until 11:30 AM. Please let me know if you think this will create a problem for your processes. We will leave the low temperature coils active for the laboratory makeup air handlers, so lab humidity will be unaffected by tomorrow's test. Lab 2037 BSL-2 Conversion Low Temperature Chiller Purchasing Seminar Lab 2037 BSL-2 Conversion Due to changing research requirements, Lab 2037 will be permanently converted to BSL2 on July 6th. Please make a note of it. Low Temperature Chiller A recent lab analysis indicates critically low oil viscosity in one of the circuits of our Carrier low temperature chiller. That chiller is used to maintain humidity set points during warm weather. In order to prevent a catastrophic and expensive failure of the chiller's compressors, we must schedule the unit to be down for repair as soon as possible. The repairs will take approximately three (3) days to complete. During that time, we will be unable to properly control humidity in the cleanroom, biocleanroom, and laboratories. It is impossible to predict the severity of the humidity excursion since it will be largely weather dependent. The warmer and more humid the outside air, the more severe the deviation from set point will be. We have not yet scheduled the repairs pending feedback from Birck users who will be impacted. If you have any input regarding the timing of the repairs, please let me know as soon as possible since it is vital that we get the repairs underway. I will wait for feedback (kuhn1(a)purdue.edu<mailto:kuhn1@purdue.edu>) until Monday 6/29 before scheduling repairs with the contractor. Once I know the dates of the downtime, I will communicate them to you. Mailroom Refrigerator Clean Out VB6 TGMS Building Evacuation Travel Mailroom closed Monday June 29th Because of unforeseen circumstances, there will not be anyone to man the mailroom on Monday June 29th. If you could please plan ahead on shipments that you may need to send out. All incoming packages will be processed the next day. I apologize for the inconvenience, but appreciate your understanding. Thank you, Mary Jo Totten Refrigerator Clean out The Refrigerator will be cleaned out on Thursday, June25th. Anything that is not properly labeled will be disposed of. Reminder: Please No Food or Drink in Labs Just a reminder to all users that we at the Birck Nanotechnology Center prohibit any food or drinks in the labs. This long-standing rule is for safety and housekeeping purposes . . . it prevents any potential for liquids or food products to be spilled onto sensitive laboratory equipment which could cause electrical safety issues and/or contamination. Thanks for your attention to this. VB6 The people from Raith/Vistec returned our VB6 to service last week which kept their promise to get the system running in the short-term. They also are working a proposal for a longer term solution, the details of which haven't been shared with us yet. TGMS Building Evacuation At 3:06 AM Friday, June 19 the toxic gas alarm was activated resulting in a building evacuation. This is a repeat of the TGMS alarm that happen on June 3 where an alarm was identified as the wireless gas monitoring system. However, a review of each of the individual point logs showed non-active alarms and the fire panel did not show a toxic gas alarm. An actual gas release did not occur. Additional changes were made to TGMS system to further troubleshoot this difficult intermittent problem. We plan to contact with the vendor of the system for additional support. Travel Driver Approval Forms Please plan ahead! Prior approval of Risk Management is required before any student or volunteer may operate a vehicle on University business. In order to be reimbursed for mileage and or any rental care expenses you must be an approved driver. Video shoot on and around the cleanroom today, 4-8 pm

This is a notification that a professional video company will be in BNC today shooting a video for the university. The shooting will begin approximately 4:00 pm this afternoon in the fabrication cleanroom, and move to the biocleanroom and the tour aisle south of the cleanroom. We do not expect it to be disruptive, and will do all that we can to keep normal operations flowing smoothly. Please be aware of the shoot and that they will be recording audio as well as shooting video. The most sensitive area to background noise will be in the tour aisle south of the cleanroom. Birck Capabilities and Use A user wrote the following in this week's survey, "(We have) a very spacious and high functioning cleanroom. (I) like the possibility of expansion for future needs. (It's unfortunate that the) cleanroom is not utilized by more students/professors. They don't seem to realize what a great opportunity they have to utilize this facility. Most companies and universities would love to have a facility like ours." Thank you to the user who wrote this comment. It is very true that the Birck Nanotechnology Center is one of the finest of its kind in the world, with a spacious and ultra-clean cleanroom with advanced processing capabilities, and a set of analytical, processing, and characterization labs that are world-class. And, as you can see from some of the facility work happening in our labs and cleanroom, we're expanding within the constraints of our building structure to accommodate more research. Over the next several months you will see more researchers coming with new equipment, bringing additional capabilities and expertise to Birck! Thanks for your comments, please keep them coming! Ron ECE student Kaiyuan Zeng wins Best Student Paper Award at IEEE WAMICON 2015 PhD student Kaiyuan Zeng has received the Best Student Conference Paper Award in the student paper competition of the IEEE Wireless and Microwave Technology Conference (WAMICON) 2015. The conference addresses up-to-date multidisciplinary research needs and interdisciplinary aspects of wireless and RF technology. The award was presented for the paper entitled "A VHF Tunable Lumped-Element Filter with Mixed Electric-Magnetic Couplings". The co-authors of the paper are Dr. Dimitra Psychogiou and Prof. Dimitrios Peroulis. He is advised by Professor Peroulis. ECE students win awards at multiple Student Design Competitions at IEEE IMS 2015 Several ECE students received multiple awards at Student Design Competitions at the 2015 IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS). This is the premier international meeting in all aspects of microwave theory and technology. Specifically, the following awards were presented: * 1st Place in YouTube/YouKu best video award: Mark Hickle, Michael Sinanis, Jenna Hickle (Video here<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtPPAnvJS6c&app=desktop>) * 1st place in tunable filter student competition: Mark Hickle, Jin Li * 2nd place in wideband balun design competition: Mohammad Abu Khater, Yu-Chen All students are advised by Professor Peroulis. Professor Peroulis' students also won the 1st place in the YouTube/YouKu video and tunable filter competitions in the 2014 IEEE IMS meeting as well.
