Dr. Ali Shakouri will become the new Mary Jo and Robert L. Kirk Director of the Birck Nanotechnology Center later this fall. He will also hold the position as Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Shakouri comes to us from the University of California, Santa Cruz where he is Professor of Electrical Engineering. His M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. At UCSC he served as lead PI on major ONR MURI and DARPA DSO grants focused on thermoelectric energy conversion. Dr. Shakouri is a nationally recognized leader in his areas of specialization and we are pleased to welcome him to Purdue University. Pizza will be provided at 11:30 a.m., the talk will begin at noon, and end by 1:00 p.m.. Professor Jason Vaughn Clark (https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECE/People/profile?resource_id=21964) from the school of Electrical and Computer Engineering will be giving a talk entitled "Towards Calibrating Stiffness, Force, and Displacement of SPMs" please see the below abstract for more information. *Abstract:* Because there is a lack of ASTM measurement standards for the AFM, it is not clear which calibration method in the literature is most accurate. Because the accuracy of the atomic force microscope is unknown, it is difficult to develop predictable models. And due to repeatability issues, two AFMs that measure the same thing will likely return different results. This talk will describe our efforts to address these issues by using self-calibratable MEMS as an accurate, practical, and practical way to calibrate AFMs. Although MEMS suffer from similar calibration problems, we have discovered a way to calibrate MEMS by leveraging off of their sensitive electromechanical attributes. All BNC Users: The Birck Nanotechnology Center semiannual Preventive Maintenance shutdown will take place during the week of October 10, 2011. Cleanroom and Laboratories operations will be affected during the week. Sunday, 9 October 2011 Remove chemicals and hazardous materials from all hoods by 11:30PM Monday, 10 October 2011 Cleanroom and Labs closed beginning 7:00 AM No work involving exhausted hoods, biosafety cabinets or enclosures, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems can be performed. The Ultrapure water system and most processing equipment will be taken off line for extended maintenance. Tuesday, 11 October 2011 Cleanroom and Laboratories preventative maintenance continued Wednesday, 12 October 2011 Cleanroom and Laboratories preventative maintenance continued Building controls preventative maintenance and upgrades Thursday, 13 October 2011 Cleanroom environment stabilization and start up. Laboratories environment stabilization and start up. Toxic Gas Monitoring System preventative maintenance and upgrades Monitor emails for updates Friday, 14 October 2011 The maintenance on the Ultrapure water system is expected to conclude late in the afternoon on Friday.
