Dear all, Just a gentle reminder that today is the Birck Coffee Hour from 3:30 - 4:30 in the atrium. We will be providing k-cups for it. (coffee, tea and hot chocolate) Every Friday from 3:30pm - 4:30pm will be the Birck Coffee hour to relax, drink some coffee, tea or hot chocolate, and socialize with those you might not normally get to see. Hammer Drilling Today in East Lab Wing

All, Beginning at noon today (1/9/13), contractors will be hammer drilling into the concrete ceiling above Lab 2087 (second floor, east wing) as part of the exhaust upgrade project. Please be aware that this may cause some vibration, especially in the immediate area. Approximately 12 holes are needed. The drilling will be intermittent in nature and will take most of the afternoon to complete. I apologize for the short notice but we were just informed this morning that the work is needed. New Mileage rate effective January 1, 2013

The IRS recently announced new standard mileage rates when using a personal vehicle for business reasons. Rates are based on the fixed and variable costs of operating a vehicle. Mileage Rate Change for Travel on or after January 1, 2013 Effective for travel on or after January 1, 2013, the privately owned vehicle mileage rate will change from 55.5 cents per mile to 56.5 cents per mile. Late material deliveries, challenges with the crane, etc. have pushed the schedule backward and created extra shutdowns. The BNC Facilities Staff and PU Physical Facilities have been working together to resolve the issues and attempt to bring the project back on schedule. The mechanical contractor, who is responsible for the delays, has been working extra hours and weekends at its own expense in an attempt to correct the schedule problems. A lot of activity will be taking place in the next couple of weeks. Here are some key dates to keep in mind if you will be working in the East Wing of the BNC. Other areas of the building will not be affected. Wednesday-Friday, Jan 9-11: Expect temperature instabilities in East Wing labs due to AHU-2B startup and testing. The labs and hoods will be functional, but there may be temperature variations throughout the period. Monday, Jan 14: Exhaust shutdown. Hoods may not be used, and all materials must be removed prior to 7:00 am Monday morning. Tuesday, Jan 15: Full commissioning of BRK 2087; lab released to users by end of day. Wednesday-Friday, Jan 16-18: Move equipment into BRK 2087; empty BRK 2043 Friday, Jan 18: Startup of biosafety cabinets in BRK 2087 Tuesday, Jan 22: BRK 2087 open for operation. (Celebrate!) I would like to thank everyone who has been affected by this project for their patience. We expect the rest of the laboratories to go much more smoothly, and BRK 2087 was a significant learning experience for the contractor. Atomistic calculations of electronic and optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots and nanocrystals Tuesday, January 8, 2013 10:00AM Burton Morgan Building, Room 129 [cid:image001.png@01CDE8EB.6A082650] Dr. Marek Korkusinski National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, Canada The significant interest in self-assembled quantum dots, dot molecules, and colloidal nanocrystals is due to their potential utilization in a new class of photonic devices, including lasers, detectors, optical media for photovoltaics. These systems are also important for coherent devices, such as quantum computing elements, optical memories, sources of single photons and entangled photon pairs. At present, optical spectra of individual dots, without the inhomogeneous broadening, can be measured with the accuracy of tens of *eV. This creates the need for theoretical tools allowing to understand the properties of existing devices and to make accurate predictions in the design phase. To accomplish this, ab-initio computational tools with atomistic precision are needed. The multiscale computational platform QNANO has been developed at the National Research Council of Canada to meet this challenge. The first steps of the procedure are similar to Purdue's NEMO application and involve atomistic definition of the sample, optimization of structure geometry, and calculation of the single-quasiparticle states within the tight-binding model. The electronic properties obtained thus far are then used in computation of dipole and Coulomb matrix elements and calculation of energies and wave functions of interacting N electrons and M holes. This allows to compute emission and absorption spectra, and thus make contact with the experiment. Two specific cases will be discussed: (i) the emission spectra of multiexciton systems confined in a self-assembled quantum dot and (ii) multiexciton generation via Auger coupling in highly excited colloidal nanocrystals. However, the described approach has limitations, which can be traced to an incomplete knowledge of the single-particle wave function obtained in the semiempirical tight-binding model. Overcoming these limitations would allow allowing to compute the particle self-energies and vertex corrections, which are crucial in predictive modelling of optics of semiconductor nanostructures. Steps aimed at improving the discussed approach will be suggested. About the Speaker: Marek Korkusinski received his PhD in 2004 at the National Research Council of Canada. His doctoral research focused on electronic correlations in semiconductor quantum dots. In 2004 he joined Professor Gerhard Klimeck's group at Purdue University, where he contributed to the NEMO3D project by porting it to large scale cluster systems and by using the platform to investigate the electronic and optical properties of quantum dots and dot molecules. Next, he joined the National Research Council, where he is currently a staff researcher. Dr. Korkusinski's research interests include the theory of electronic, optical, and transport properties of semiconductor nanostructures computed ab initio or using semiempirical atomistic approaches. Dr. Korkusinski has also an extensive experience in modelling and design of quantum computing elements composed of lateral gated quantum dot devices. In such devices complexity arises from the need to control coherently a large number of electrons in an environment created by a nontrivial sample design, and subject to various sources of decoherence. Dr. Korkusinski is the author or co-author of 80 publications and holds a US Patent for a coded quantum computing element. Smell in Birck Atrium

All, You may have noticed an odor this afternoon in the Birck Atrium and in the hallways adjacent to the atrium. The odor is due to grinding activities taking place on the third floor as part of the east wing exhaust upgrade project. Unfortunately, the high winds and the wind direction are causing the smell to be drawn back into the building. This is temporary and should dissipate over the next hour or so.
