Sent on behalf of Professor Ali Shakouri, Director of Birck Dear all, We are going to have to do a $2000 repair on the 2nd-floor copier upstairs because someone stuck a sharp object (like a letter opener) in it trying to dislodge a jam and scratched a fuser, causing it to print black smudges on everything. This is considered equipment abuse and it will be treated as such. This will also not be covered by our contract either, since it was not wear and tear, so we will have to pay for it to be fixed. Please be particularly careful on using all BNC equipment including the copiers. Having the privilege of working in such a world-class laboratory requires good judgment in all actions from all of us.

Good Morning! On Tuesday, July 15th from 1:30-3:00 p.m. we will be offering Ariba training. This training will cover how to enter an order in our Ariba system. Ariba is a web-based system and is designed for ease of use. You are being invited because you do purchasing in your role. There is really no need to have to take your order to someone to key in for you anymore. You can quickly place your own orders. We have several Ariba experts right here in Birck who will be available to help and support you when or if you have questions. Please plan on attending this 1 ½ hour training session. If you cannot attend we will have an alternate date for those who are unable to attend. Making SiC MOSFETs Competitive in Low to Medium Voltage Applications Dallas Morisette Adjunct Assistant Professor Electrical and Computer Engineering Purdue University July 8, 2014 BRK RM 1001 10:30 Silicon carbide (SiC), with it’s wide bandgap, high critical field, and high thermal conductivity, is a promising alternative to silicon for power switching devices. Unipolar devices such as Schottky barrier diodes and MOSFETs are particularly interesting, as they exhibit very low switching losses compared with Si bipolar devices, such as PiN diodes and IGBTs. This enables higher frequency operation, reduces the size and cost of the required passive components, and improves overall system efficiency. This new class of devices is enabling the next generation of high-efficiency power electronics systems, and is impacting a diverse range of industries, including electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, power distribution in data centers, and solar inverters. However, the performance of SiC MOSFETs has not yet reached theoretical limits. This is particularly true for devices targeted at low to medium voltage applications (200 V to 2 kV), a potentially high-volume market. This is due to low channel mobility, which is typically less than 5% of the bulk mobility, and has not improved significantly over the last decade. Alternative gate insulator fabrication methods and materials will be discussed, and a novel FinFET inspired device structure will be introduced. These concepts could help the SiC MOSFET compete successfully in this critical application space.

If you are taking a long trip and leaving your car parked on Purdue property, you can contact Holly Alexander at haalexander(a)purdue.edu<mailto:haalexander@purdue.edu> and ask for permission. You must give her your Parking permit number, car license number, and time frame that it will be parked. Ariba Demonstration Holiday Survey Ariba New Office Supply Vendor Beginning July 1st Our current contract with Guy Brown expires on June 30th. Effective July 1st, the new supplier for office supplies will be OfficeMax. The Guy Brown catalog will not be available within Ariba after Monday June 30th at 3:00 pm. The new punch-out catalog has been scheduled to be available in Ariba Tuesday morning, July 1st. Holiday Purdue University will be closed Friday, July 4th in observance of Independence day. Survey Aligners Based on earlier survey input asking for aligner service, we scheduled a field service engineer to come this week to service our optical alignment systems. He did general preventive maintenance on all systems on their manipulators, and improved focus. Additionally he replaced the air cylinders on the MJB3-1 and MJB3-2 mirror housings, tightened the wafer alignment theta micrometer and chuck holder for smoother operation on the MJB3-2, and cleaned and improved the travel mechanisms. On the MA24 he adjusted the proximity sensor on the wafer unload transfer arm. They should be tuned-up and ready to go. Panasonic, Leybold We have repaired both the Panasonic etcher and the Leybold e-beam evaporator, and they have been returned to service. Both had difficult issues that required several days to diagnose and fix. Thank you for your patience during this time. Waste Reminder We've had two instances this week where sharps and/or hazardous materials were found by the custodians in office trash. Please remember to use proper disposal receptacles for this type of waste. These waste bins are located throughout the facility . . . never dispose of this type of waste in normal trash cans, and never have this material in offices. Thanks, Ron

Everyone, I just spoke to the police and the plane that is flying low over Birck is spraying for Gypsy Moths. It was too foggy to do it this morning. I just wanted to let you know. The spray is not harmful to humans.
