Seminar Pierre-Emmanuel Gallardon Seminar Friday, July 25th at 10:00 am Birck 1001 For more information please visit: https://nanohub.org/groups/bnc/calendar/details/1045 Survey Feedback Equipment Location We've received feedback that some users would prefer a different location for some equipment, citing that it is inconvenient to bring wafers/devices out of the cleanroom for further processing on equipment in the labs. When Birck was first brought on-line we made decisions on where each piece of equipment should go, based on usage scenarios, contamination control, and other factors. For example, the dicing saws were located in the outside labs due to the significant particulate generated when sawing through wafers. However if there are specific suggestions for relocation of equipment to make processing more convenient, without compromising cleanliness and safety, we would be happy to discuss your ideas. Please come see me with your suggestions and we certainly will consider any and all ideas. Internet-Enabled Cleanroom Computers Recently our internet-enabled computers in the cleanroom have been taken off-line as they are very old, and they were running Windows XP (no longer supported by Microsoft or ECN). We are now in the process of getting quotes on new computers with Windows 7 that will enable us to again provide computers with internet access in the cleanroom. This should be completed in just a few weeks. Kudos for Staff Thanks for the kind and encouraging words in this week's survey regarding good support from a number of our engineering staff members. We consider all our users as our 'customers' and it is always nice to get compliments from the customer. Thanks again for your constructive suggestions. Ron

Today Wednesday July 16, 2014 Seminar 3:30 PM BRK, ROOM 1001 Mark Rudner Associate Professor, Condensed Matter Theory at Niels Bohr International Academy in Copenhagen "Coupling of Electron Spin Dynamics and Nanomechanical Motion in Carbon Nanotubes" Due to their low masses and high stiffnesses, nanostructures made out of atomically-thin carbon-based materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) feature high mechanical oscillation frequencies and large zero-point vibration amplitudes. These properties open many avenues for exploring both fundamental phenomena and potential applications based on the coupling of nanomechanical and electronic degrees of freedom. The recently discovered strong spin-orbit coupling in CNTs provides an intrinsic coupling between electron spins and flexural motion of the nanotube. For a long nanotube with a quasi-continuous phonon spectrum, we show that this coupling gives rise to a dramatic enhancement of the electron spin relaxation rate near a level crossing in the Zeeman spectrum of a few-electron nanotube quantum dot spin qubit, as observed in recent experiments. For a short suspended nanotube with well-separated discrete phonon modes, this system can provide a natural solid state realization of the Jaynes-Cummings model of quantum optics. Our estimates indicate that, with currently achievable experimental parameters, the strong coupling regime of coherent spin-phonon exchange is within reach. Detection schemes and potential applications will be discussed. Brief Bio: After earning his PhD in Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2008), he spent 3 years as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. In 2011 he joined the faculty of Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor, before moving to NBIA in the fall of 2012. Mark has worked on a wide range of topics, including electron-nuclear spin dynamics in semiconductor quantum dots, electron transport and photothermal effects in graphene, spin-orbit coupling in carbon nanotubes, and topological phenomena in dissipative and periodically-driven systems. Safety Seminar Survey Feedback Safety Users, We Have had additional sharps being disposed of in the general trash. The following are items that may only be disposed of in a sharps container (razor blades, glass slides, glass cover slips, pipette tips, syringe or any other needles and tweezers). This poses a hazard to the custodians and others that may handle general trash. Please be mindful of others. Sharps container can be obtained from Ira if needed. Your cooperation is appreciated. Stephen Jurss BNC Safety Office Seminar Mark Rudner Associate Professor, Condensed Matter Theory at Niels Bohr International Academy in Copenhagen Coupling of Electron Spin Dynamics and Nanomechanical Motion in Carbon Nanotubes Wednesday, July 16th at 3:30 pm in Birck 1001 Survey Feedback VB6 Availability The VB6 has been heavily booked recently, and some users have been able only to get time on the machine after normal business hours. A few suggestions to help ease this situation come to mind: 1) Try to reserve the system at the earliest possible time within the reservation window, currently 7 days in advance. If you can plan your VB6 needs a week into the future you have a better chance of obtaining that time slot. 2) Consider using the Raith for your electron beam lithography processes. The Raith is in lab 1239 and doesn't have quite the capability of the VB6, but it could be used for certain applications. 3) For critical processing needs work with our e-beam lithography engineer, Bill Rowe, to schedule beyond the normal 7-day time horizon. 4) Remember to cancel reservations that can't be used due to unforeseen processing problems or other issues. This frees up the equipment for other users, and this is critical for a system like the VB6 where every time slot is needed by someone. This is important for all the processing equipment in our facility. Equipment Age A survey comment related that some of the equipment is getting older. This is certainly the case, with the Varian evaporator probably winning the prize for the oldest! The Birck Nanotechnology Center has been very fortunate to be able to add new equipment on a regular basis over the past few years. A few examples of newer equipment are: Bruker Optical Profilometer, Mirwec roll-to-roll system, PVD dielectric and metals sputtering system, PVD magnetics sputtering system, Heidelberg laser writer, Jipelec RTA, plus many others. As always, I invite your feedback on specific needs for new equipment so that we can get them on our roadmaps and plan for them in the future. Thanks again for your constructive suggestions. Ron
