NSAC Undergraduate Student Research Symposium at Discovery Park

Yesterday at the Birck Nanotechnology Center, the Discovery Park community witnessed several exciting research posters by summer undergrad student researchers engaged with tackling real world challenges in several research groups within Discovery Park research centers. The research works presented by the undergraduate students were truly excellent and exciting, and the Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (NSAC) is happy to announce the following as winners of this year's NSAC Undergraduate Student Research Symposium at Discovery Park. Additional training will be provided by a KLA field service engineer during the week of August 11th. We will make it available to users shortly thereafter. Someone who demonstrates great leadership skills and provides outstanding customer service? You can nominate that person for a CSSAC Excellence Award! The deadline is August 8, 2014 - nominate someone today! Please feel free to share this information with the Administrative/Professional staff in your areas as well! **************************************************************************************************************************** To: Administrative Officers, Deans, Vice Presidents, Department Heads, Directors, Managers, and Coordinators, and all clerical and service staff members Re: Nominations for the CSSAC Excellence Award Nomination Deadline: Friday, August 8, 2014 The Clerical and Service Staff Advisory Committee, (CSSAC), announces they are accepting nominations for the CSSAC Excellence Award. This is a newly created award for clerical and service staff on the West Lafayette campus, through sponsorship from the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, and the Provost. The CSSAC Excellence Award consists of a plaque and $1,500 and is subject to tax withholdings. This annual award has been created to recognize a full-time clerical staff member, (op-tech staff not eligible for this award) and a full-time service staff member who demonstrates excellence in the following areas: * Consistently going above and beyond job requirements * Demonstrating exemplary conduct and leadership skills * Providing exemplary customer service * Showing initiative Selection will be based on the degree to which the recipient, in service to the University community, demonstrates those qualities listed in the above criteria. The details are given below- Thanks Regards, Ankit Date: July 30th, 2014 Venue: Birck 1001 Time: 2-4PM *Title: ** * Fundamental Design Principles of Novel MEMSbased "Landau" Switches, Sensors, and Actuators : Role of Electrode Geometry and Operation Regime *Abstract: * Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are considered as potential candidates for "More-Moore" and "More-than-Moore" applications due to their versatile use as sensors, switches, and actuators. Examples include: Accelerometers for sensing, RF-MEMS capacitive switches in communication, suspended-gate (SG) FET in computation, and deformable mirrors in optics. In spite of the wide range of applications of MEMS in diverse fields, one of the major roadblocks for MEMS is their instability. Instability divides the operation regime into stable and unstable and poses fundamental challenges for several applications. For example: Tuning range of deformable mirrors is fundamentally limited by pull-in instability, RF MEMS capacitive switches suffer from the problem of hard landing, and intrinsic hysteresis of SG-FET puts a lower bound on the minimum power dissipation. In this thesis, we provide solutions to the application specific problems of MEMS and utilize operation in or close to unstable regime for performance enhancement in several novel applications. Specifically: (i) We propose novel device concepts with nanostructured electrodes to address the aforementioned problems of instability, (ii) We propose a switch with hysteresis-free ideal switching characteristics based on the operation in unstable regime, and (iii) We propose a Flexure biosensor that operates at the boundary of stable and unstable regimes to achieve improved sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. In general, we have advocated electrode geometry as a design variable for MEMS and used MEMS as an illustrative example of "Landau" systems to advocate operation regime as a new design variable.

Birck and Cleanroom News Atrium Displays As you have probably noticed the lower atrium displays are now active! We're still working out a few bugs in the display software, but they're close to being complete. This is true for the upper atrium display as well. The next step is create the content for the displays. If you have an interesting diagram from your research, or a bit of news that you'd like to share with the Birck community and any visitors to our facility, please forward them to Heather Anthrop for inclusion in the display content. KLA Tencor Profiler We are finalizing the installation plans for our new KLA-Tencor P7 surface profilometer. The field service engineer is scheduled to be working in our cleanroom during the week of August 11th, and training on the system will begin the following week with Geoff Gardner. This instrument will give us a more accurate and reliable reading of step height over dissimilar materials as well as over the same materials. TEM Prep (Lab 1267) Moving to SEM Prep (Lab 1233) The TEM prep lab is being consolidated into the SEM prep lab in order to make way for a new faculty researcher coming to Purdue and Birck. All people who have had card access to 1267 are being switched over to 1233, so please do your TEM sample preparation in this new lab which is directly across the galley from 1267.
