Construction of Flex Lab SEMINAR Construction of Flex Lab The Flex Lab will be a new advanced laboratory building located south of (behind) the Birck Nanotechnology Center. It will face Gates Drive, across from the Sun statue and DLRC, occupying the space where two former Married Student Housing buildings currently stand. Those buildings will be demolished and a third building will be used for the construction office. This new building will provide needed laboratory space for the College of Engineering. They will be overseeing the construction in conjunction with PUPF, Jacobs Engineering (designers), and Pepper Construction (contractor). The new Flex Lab building project will begin on April 4, 2016, with the erection of the construction fence. At that time, the gravel parking lot and the A lot behind the building will close permanently. As the construction progresses, there will be other parking and road closures behind the BNC, but we have made arrangements for all types of deliveries to be made during and after construction. During the demolition process of the former Married Student Housing buildings (137, 138) it is inevitable that there will be vibration-causing work. We are to be informed of the actual dates and times of this work and will pass it along as we receive it. The impact of these activities is not known, but it must be assumed that we will not be within our current vibration criteria during work periods. The current plan is for demolition to begin April 6, 2016. Pepper Construction has given us a preliminary plan and will continue to give us updates. As always, pizza and beverages will be provided. Dr. Bursten's research starts with the basic idea that there is more to the goals of science than just describing nature. She shows how these goals influence scientific theories, concepts, and explanations. She specializes in the philosophy of nanoscience, which is a branch of chemistry and physics that has grown up around the development of practical technologies aimed at solving extra-scientific problems, including medical imaging and the energy crisis. To solve these problems, nanoscientists are synthesizing new materials with never-before-seen properties and using scientific reasoning to figure out how to manipulate and control these properties in new machines, devices, and medical therapies. Title: Boundary Work: Nanoscience Meets Philosophy Date/Time: March 23 at 5:30pm Location: MRGN 121 ABSTRACT: Nanoscience is an inherently interdisciplinary field of study. Because it developed around a scale of investigation, rather than a set of laws or phenomena, it invites research programs from fields as diverse as materials science, biology, physics, chemistry, engineering, and design. For instance, gold nano-cubes are synthesized and characterized by chemists and physicists; modeled on computers by mechanical engineers; studied for their color-changing properties in stained glass by art historians, designers, and materials scientists; and manipulated for smarter drug delivery by chemists and biologists. This scale-centric character of nanoscience means that knowledge in nanoscience is often grouped not along disciplinary lines, but rather around instrumentation techniques, around individual materials, as described above, or around particular applications. Consequently, the structure of knowledge in nanoscience is better understood as clusters of what Peter Galison has termed "trading zones," rather than a taxonomy of laws, theories, models, and heuristics. These trading zones permit contributions from diverse research perspectives-including those from history and philosophy of science. I have spent 4 years working with a nanoscience laboratory with the aim of understanding the structure of knowledge in nanoscience. Through this work I have become convinced that philosophers and historians of science can impact the development of new knowledge in nanoscience alongside practitioners in STEM fields. In this talk, I show how contributions from philosophy of science can influence research in nanoscience by describing how philosophical reflection on the concept "surface" led to reforms in experiment design in my lab. I discuss how these reforms, in conjunction with regulations on the toxicity and environmental impact of nanomaterials, can influence the development of classification systems in nanoscience. Thanks a lot, Ali Title: Engineering Advanced Biomaterials: From contrast agents for brain tumor imaging to superbiocompatible hydrogels for pancreatic islet cell immunoisolation Speaker: Omid Veiseh, Ph.D. Department of Chemical Engineering and The David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School March 14, 2016; 10-11am Birck 1001 Abstract: The first part of my talk will focus on work completed during my Ph.D. aimed at the development of multifunctional nanoparticles to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors. Biological barriers continue to limit access of therapeutics and contrast agents to brain tumor cells. To overcome these limitations, we developed tumor-specific, optical/MR imaging nanoparticles, which were able to transverse biological barriers and aid in the diagnosis, staging, and resection of brain tumors. The second part of my talk will focus on our ongoing efforts at MIT aimed at advancing technologies geared towards the engineering of a bioartificial pancreas for the treatment of patients afflicted with Juvenile Diabetes (Type 1). Type 1 diabetes is triggered by T-cell mediated destruction of insulin producing β-cells localized in the pancreas. Exogenous cell therapy, in the form of islet transplantation, has been intensely investigated as a method to restore glycemic control. However, due to host rejection of transplanted cells and the lack of biocompatible encapsulation materials, its widespread clinical application has been limited. Our efforts have been two-fold, focused on both understanding the mechanism by which current encapsulation materials become rejected and innovating novel immune modulatory biomaterials that can mediate foreign body reactions and fibrosis. In my talk, I will describe the various influential parameters we have discovered to be critical to the effective design and fabrication of hydrogel materials for long-term protection of therapeutic cells. Biography: Dr. Omid Veiseh is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Working in the laboratories of Institute Professor Robert Langer and Professor Daniel G. Anderson, his research is aimed at developing immune modulatory biomaterials for cell-based therapies. He obtained his Bachelors of Science degree in Cell Biology from Western Washington University, and a Dual Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering and Nanotechnology from the University of Washington. Dr. Veiseh has contributed to more than 45 peer-reviewed publications, including those in Nature Biotechnology, Nature Materials, Nature Medicine, and Nature Reviews Drug Discovery. He is an inventor on 12 pending or awarded patents and three separate biotechnology companies have licensed technologies invented by Dr. Veiseh for commercialization. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards and fellowships including: NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) Fellowship, NIH T32 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Postdoctoral Fellowship, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship, DOD/CDMRP Breast Cancer Research Program Postdoctoral Fellowship, and DOD/CDMRP Visionary Postdoctoral Fellowship, and most recently, a Young Investigator Award from the Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF).

BNC E-news for the week of March 14th

BIRCK CLOSURE REFRIGERATOR Seminar BIRCK CLOSURE NOTICE: The BNC will be completely closed for one day on March 17, 2016 from 12:01AM to 11PM. Only people involved in the shutdown will be allowed in the building during the shutdown. All offices, laboratories, and the cleanroom will be closed. All chemicals and research inside fume hoods will need to be placed in closed containers prior to March 17, 2016 from 12:01AM This is an advance notice on March 17, 2016 from 6AM to 9PM Purdue Physical Facilities Department will complete an emergency power interruption to fix a high voltage power issue with our center's fire pump controller. Per safety codes, power to the fire pump transfer/control was hardwired directly from the electrical substation to the fire panel when the building was constructed. This wiring bypasses our main switchboard and provides no lockout point for the fire panel. Therefore, for safety reasons the electric substation providing power to the fire pump has to be shutdown. The affected substation also supplies power to one of the building's three, 3000 amp switchboards. Only essential personnel will have access to the building during the power outage since the building will be without fire protection during that time. All CLEANROOM and LABORATORY research work will be suspended and building access closed during power outage. All exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be shut down, and chemicals inside fume hoods will need to be placed in closed containers prior to March 17, 2016 from 12:01AM. General areas that will be affected by the power outage are listed below. - All chemical exhaust systems for the labs and cleanroom. - Building ambient temperature and humidity control o Offices o General laboratories o Cleanroom o Atrium - Office power and lighting (all computers will lose power) - Atrium power and lighting - Card reader system Systems NOT affected by the power outage are listed below. - Emergency power (on emergency generator power) - UPS power (on emergency generator power) - Equipment emergency power (on emergency generator power) - Cleanroom research equipment power (power from a different switchboard) - Laboratory research equipment power (power from a different switchboard) Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
