The relaxed enforcement is already underway and will expire at 7 a.m. Friday (Feb. 26), said Holly Alexander, manager of Purdue Parking Facilities. "We encourage staff and students to move their vehicles to these garages and lots to make street clearing quicker and safer for road crews," Alexander said. The university is currently running under a normal operating schedule, and any status changes would be announced to the university community via the Purdue Alert system, said Carol Shelby, senior director of environmental health and public safety. Shelby said that if adverse weather necessitates any change in operational status for the West Lafayette campus, special procedures pertaining to classes, operations, parking, pay and/or attendance become effective. Available campus parking garages are the Wood Street Garage, Marsteller Street Garage, Northwestern Avenue Garage, University Street Garage, McCutcheon Garage and Harrison Street Garage. The Grant Street Garage will maintain normal operations. Students in Purdue residence halls are encouraged to use the McCutcheon Garage or University Street Garage. SEMINAR SYSTEM OUTAGE VB-6 Seminar As Co-chair of the 2016 Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) for Noble Metal Nanoparticles, it is my pleasure to invite your department's graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to participate in this seminar by submitting an abstract for a research poster or an oral presentation. The seminar will take place at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA during the weekend of June 14-15, 2016. The GRS program is a series of highly successful and unique opportunities for early career scientists to discuss their current research and build informal networks with their peers that may lead to a lifetime of collaboration and scientific achievement. Each seminar is held in conjunction with a related Gordon Research Conference (GRC) and takes place the weekend immediately prior to the GRC. Topics for this seminar include nanoparticle synthesis, biomedicine, catalysis, and plasmonics. The deadline to apply for an oral presentation is March 18, 2016. The deadline to apply for a poster presentation is May 21, 2016. Spots are limited, so we encourage applicants to submit their abstracts early. There continues to be active discussions on the correct strategy for Birck in terms of e-beam lithography tools and capabilities. This is not an easy decision as these tools typically cost more than $2M, so the decision has to be weighed carefully. We don't expect a direction to be established in the near term, but deliberations are now ongoing. Recently the Birck VB-6 has enjoyed a good period of uptime, and we're working with Raith/Vistec to continue to diagnose and fix the cause of random gun trips.

Parylene Coater The parylene coater is down due to a vacuum pump failure. A new pump is being expedited through purchasing and we expect it to arrive next week, at which time we will immediately install it and get the parylene system back to operation. Please check Coral for availability next week. Room Wizards Our Room Wizard conference room scheduling system is off-line due to a network issue. We reported this to ECN who told us that this problem also appears across campus with Room Wizards in other Purdue buildings. ECN is working to repair the issue. Survey Input A user commented this week that the SEM areas appear at times to be dirty, and should be kept cleaner. We will provide cleaning wipes for use in the SEM prep and analysis rooms, and this will become part of the training for new users. Chemical Delivery It has been brought to our attention that in some instances it has taken 2-3 day to receive materials after they have arrived at Birck. In order to improve efficiency and provide better service when ordering the following information can be included in the "ship to address". Please include the name of the individual user and the laboratory room # or note it will be going to the cleanroom or bio-cleanroom. This will assist in getting material to their final destination as quickly as possible. When a chemical shipment arrives, Mary Jo will notify Ira and the researcher the chemical is supposed to be delivered to. It is ok for the researcher to pick up the chemical before Ira does as long as safety protocols are followed. In this case, it will be the responsibility of the individual researchers to notify the Birck safety officer of any concerns, update the MSDS as needed, and help Ira login the arrival of the chemical to BRK. Just a reminder for both the general labs and the cleanroom, the orange acid gloves are re-usable unless they have been used for piranha cleaning. In addition Ira marks them inside of the each week and will replace them after a number of weeks. These gloves can be rinsed, wiped dry and re-used unless damaged or show signs of deterioration. Please help to reduce the cost of facility operation. This will benefit everyone in the long run. Wireless Receivers For the next week we will be replacing wireless receivers within the building.
