Multilayer graphene flakes, held together by weak van der Waals forces have also attracted attention due to their stacking dependent electronic and optical properties. Interestingly, a vast majority of these properties can be understood in terms of a non-interacting picture. In particular, the optical conductivity of monolayer graphene in the near infra-red and visible range has been found to be independent of frequency, and equal to e2/4ђ. From experimental investigations of the optical properties of chemically exfoliated mono and multilayered graphene flakes, we probe the effect of electron-electron interactions on the universal optical transmittance and excitons in graphene. The electron-electron or Coulomb interaction strength is varied both by modulating the dielectric constant of the exfoliating solvent, as well as changes in the carrier density. To vary the carrier density controllably, a method has been developed to dope (n-type and p-type) graphene monolayers through charge transfer interaction by trapping selected organic molecules between graphene and underneath substrates. Controllability has been demonstrated in terms of shift in Raman spectra and Dirac point in graphene monolayers. We find that the universality is robust throughout the visible range of the spectrum, and this is consistent with chiral symmetry as its origin. It has been shown that universality is broken if chiral symmetry can be broken. This is further supported by changes in the excitonic features which could disrupt the chiral symmetry. The shift and broadening of excitonic features are found to impact the onset of universality at low wavelengths. Our experiments also help to verify the theoretically predicted transmittance spectra in the presence of Coulomb interactions and resolve the discrepancy in the numerical factor governing the magnitude and frequency dependence of the transmittance in monolayer.

Numerical Modeling of III-Nitride Semiconductors: >From Material Properties to Device Performance Enrico Bellotti Boston University Birck 2001: Monday, June 27 from 3:00-4:00PM Abstract: This talk presents the current research activities of the BU Computational Electronics Group, which are aimed at developing multi-scale modeling approaches for semiconductor materials and devices. The first part of this talk will discuss the application of this methodology in examining the breakdown properties of wide band gap semiconductors, in particular GaN and AlGaN. Starting from DFT-based electronic structure calculations and computing the carrier phonon interaction without including fitting parameters, it will be shown that it is possible to predict macroscopic device performance of avalanche photodetectors and power rectifiers. The second part of this talk will discuss the current research aimed at understanding the behavior of dislocations, defect formation and migration in GaN, their impact on the electronic and optical material properties, and ultimately device reliability. The work at Boston Univ. has been supported in part by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory through the Collaborative Research Alliance (CRA) for MultiScale multidisciplinary Modeling of Electronic materials (MSME), NSF, ARO, CERDEC-NVESD and DRS.

SEM - Hitachi S-4800 Workshop Thursday June 23rd

Dear users, Hitachi's senior application engineer, Mr. Atsushi Muto, will be coming to Birck Nanotechnology Center for a one day workshop on our SEM S-4800. The workshop will consist on an introductory talk and two hands-on sessions morning and afternoon. The introductory talk will be from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in room BRK#1001. The morning hands-on session will start at 10 am and the afternoon hands-on session will start at 1pm, both in room BRK#1235. Main topics to be thought will be low voltage imaging, backscattered electron detection, STEM imaging, and sample preparation. In his current role, he provides technical expertise, applications development and collaborative research activities. His research interests include FE-SEM system development, broad ion beam/focused ion beam applications and variable pressure electron microscopes. ABSTRACT The Hitachi S-4800 is an ultra-high resolution, field emission scanning electron microscope located in the Birck facility. An introductory talk will include a discussion and review of the imaging performance and capabilities of FE-SEM and will be followed up by hands on training sessions. This will include low voltage imaging, backscattered electron detection, and how to maximize imaging performance using the various detectors on the microscope. Sample preparation is also critical to quality results and we will discuss the latest in sample preparation techniques for UHR imaging.

Process Support in the Cleanroom A user suggested that more process support be given by our engineering staff. For the immediate time period we have Dr. Nithin Raghunathan who has extensive processing background to help with your process needs, and we have hired two additional process engineers into our group. They will be starting later this summer, so we're adding a lot of process experience to the team. UPW and N2 in Hoods A suggestion was made to install UPW sprayers and N2 guns in those fume hoods that presently do not have them. We will initiate a project to evaluate which hoods are easy to retrofit and those that will take more time and materials. Hopefully we will find UPW and N2 in close proximity to a number of hoods that will be quick and low-cost to accommodate. Travel Training [cid:image002.jpg@01D1C7E0.D6C17760]

ICP for Gold and Silver A user asked that we consider obtaining an ICP plasma etch system in which Au and Ag can be used. We will put this on our equipment plan . . . thank you for the input and suggestion. Cameras are Back On-Line! As many Birck users know we have had an ongoing issue with our camera server. We tried to repair and/or rebuild the server but we found that parts and software were just not available for this older system. So to return our cameras to service we acquired a new NVR (Network Video Recorder) that is now running an initial complement of cameras and we're going to be adding more cameras in the near future. We have 16TB of storage which will hold video recordings for several weeks. Here is an example of one of our new cameras being on-line: [cid:image003.jpg@01D1C263.02D10A60]

?Stock Room Hours A user commented that it is sometimes difficult to get to the Birck stockroom for purchasing supplies during the 1:00 - 1:30 office hours, and asked that slightly extended hours be considered. Starting on Monday, June 6th the stockroom hours will be extended by 15 minutes, now being open 1:00 - 1:45 every weekday. We hope this extra 15 minutes will accommodate users' schedules after lunch.

Hi all, Science on Tap is this Thursday! We will be hosting Dr. Babak Ziaie, a professor from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue, to give a talk on "MagicTM Tape, Real Science". I hope you can join us for this exciting talk! Food will be provided at the event. When and Where: Thursday, May 26th at 6PM, upstairs at the Lafayette Brewing Company. Abstract: Our everyday surrounding materials, if looked at with more than a cursory manner, offer a unique opportunity to delve deeper into some extraordinary scientist phenomena. We take many of these “ordinary stuff” for granted, but they can be magical and a source of endless fascination, if one starts tinkering with them. One such “stuff” is MagicTM Tape used to wrap Christmas and birthday presents. Over the past few years, we have done some kitchen-top experiments with MagicTM Tape and have discovered some intriguing properties that can be used to make inexpensive sensors and tiny robots.
