SAVE THE DATE September 23, 2016, Noon to 5:30 p.m. For The Discovery Park Open House and Convergence Conference Greetings Everyone, Discovery Park is planning an open house on Friday, September 23, 2016 to promote and celebrate Discovery Park’s research, solicit new faculty partnerships, and increase awareness on campus and in the community about Discovery Park Brief Summary of Activities Between 12:30 and 2 p.m., a series of TED-style talks – we’re calling them “VOSS Talks” – and a Fireside Chat will be presented by Discovery Park investigators and staff in MRGN 121. “Quick talks” and tours of Discovery Park Centers and buildings begin at 2 p.m. Center directors will talk about the research problems the center is tackling. Each building will offer refreshments and food with a unique international theme. From 3 to 4 p.m., pre-school students from the nearby childcare centers will parade through the Discovery Park grounds. Soundscapes will be set-up, music, and the Boilermaker Special will be present for transport needs. Date: September 23, 2016 The event takes place the day after the Ken Burns Lecture, which is co-sponsored by Discovery Park and the day before Purdue Family Day, which is on the following Saturday. Purdue plays Nevada Wolf Pack at home. 2nd floor Grad Offices We will be scrubbing and waxing the 2nd floor graduate student offices on August 17th and 18th. We will post a sign on your office door as to which day your office will be done. You MUST move everything up off of the floor that you do not want to get wet and ruined. We will move your office chairs out to the hallway. On these days, you will not have access to your office from 5:00AM - 11:45AM. Thank you for helping us keep Birck beautiful. Evaporator Source Material Listings A user asked if we can put the source material list someplace online that would be accessible from outside Birck. Currently we have the sources listed on the High-Definition display at the top of the atrium stairway but it would also be convenient to check from a remote location which sources are installed in each evaporator. We are doing the following: 1. Currently, whenever a source change is performed Kenny & Dave mail out a list of the sources to the Coral mailing lists associated with each evaporator. Users who are trained on evaporator(s) should be on the respective mailing lists, and should receive an email whenever a source change is made. This is sent to users' Purdue email accounts and with this current procedure all trained users should be receiving up-to-date source material listings whenever changes are made. If you're not receiving these mailings please see Kenny or Dave to make sure you are on the appropriate mailing lists. 2. We have begun a project to see if the current source lists posted on the upper atrium displays can be linked to our website. While we don't know if this is possible we're hopeful this can be accomplished at some point as we update the look and content of our Birck website. 3. As we switch over from Coral to iLabs scheduling software, which will be accessible offsite as well, we believe we can designate a field in each evaporator page that will show current source materials. This too is an IT development project that is under investigation. iLabs is scheduled for Birck deployment in the Oct/Nov timeframe so watch for this in the Fall. 4. If you have additional ideas please see Kenny, Dave, or Ron. Fume Hood Housekeeping A user commented that the fume hoods continue to be cluttered, that empty solvent bottles are left in hoods, and that dirty glass slides are left on working surfaces. As a reminder to all users, please clean up after your process is complete and please dispose of empty bottles in the appropriate manner. This not only keeps the common areas in the hoods clean but also helps us maintain stock of all chemicals. If empty bottles are hidden then we don't realize additional supplies are needed, sometimes not until we're completely out of stock. This introduces an unnecessary delay in having critical chemicals on hand because of the additional time required to order new chemicals. Thanks for your cooperation. Refrigerator Clean out The refrigerator will be cleaned out on Monday, August 1st at 2:00 pm. If something is out dated or looks old, has no name or label on it, the item will be thrown away. Notification of Scheduled Secondary Data Networks Edge Router Migration Work -- ITaP Change Management WORK TO BE PERFORMED: From 12:00 AM to 5:00 AM on 7/30/16, The ITaP Data Networks Team will be performing migration of a campus Secondary edge router as part of the FREH data center retirement project. AFFECTED CLIENTS: This work will cause service disruptions for the following items: 1. ns4 Blue Cat DNS server 2. ITIS-Data team internal blip server 3. campus Google Cache SCOPE OF WORK: During the scheduled outage window, affected client(s) should plan to experience 1 service disruption lasting up to 30 minutes in duration. It is possible that many affected clients will not experience a true outage but may just notice slower response times during the scheduled work. This causes photoresist fumes to be noticed in the photolithography aisles. We have submitted a work order to build vents for all the unvented photoresist waste cans in order to exhaust the fumes safely out and away from users. Advanced Circuits The business office has noticed an uptick of requests to use a credit card to make purchases with Advanced Circuits. Advanced Circuits is a vender in Ariba therefore these orders should not be placed on a credit card. E-Beam Resist A user asked why we don't stock different e-beam resists, such as ZEP520A. We have not stocked ZEP due to the expense of purchasing it. A quart of ZEP520A costs $10,500, and is much more expensive than PMMA A4. Additional specialty developers, rinses and removers are also required adding to the already high cost. We encourage the few Zep users to acquire their own supply of the resist. As for XR1541 6% we typically have this in stock, but it has been depleted and we will get an order started but it may take a few weeks to receive it. In the meantime there are supplies of XR1541 2% & 4% available in the refrigerator. Also, it would be a great help to all of us for users to notify the staff when bottles of photoresists and other chemicals are first emptied. Many times users return empty bottles into storage, even into the back of storage cabinets or hoods, and it is not known to order more. 3D Cell Culture Training Course - August 25 &26 2016

Dear Colleagues, The 3D Cell Culture Core (3D3C) facility organized the first hands-on training workshop for basic 3D cell culture techniques on June 16 and 17, 2016. The workshop was a success. Since after our initial call it was rapidly over-subscribed and to accommodate those who were not able to enroll, the facility is planning to hold another hands-on training workshop on August 25 and 26, 2016. The workshop will be similar to the June workshop covering some basic techniques for work with tumors or other types of tissues that require the formation of masses or spheroids. The prerequisites to attend the workshop are sufficient knowledge in standard (2D) cell culture techniques, REM biosafety training and blood-borne-pathogen training. The course fee is $350 per person from Purdue University (please contact me for fees for registrants from outside Purdue). If you are interested in the workshop, please contact me for information and registration. The workshop is limited to SIX participants. The deadline for registration is August 3, 2016.
