New Purchasing Procedure

All, The Birck Business Office is now working in conjunction with the Executive Office Business Operations Center (EOBOC) to handle certain aspects of both credit card purchases as well as Ariba purchases. With that said, we have made some modifications to our purchasing processes. Credit Card orders: Please complete the "purchasing details" and "account numbers to be charged" section of the new Purchasing Card Transaction Form with all of the pertinent information. Bring the form to the appropriate account manager in the business office for the necessary approvals. You can then see Viki Rogers in the business office to check out a credit card. After completing your purchase, return the credit card to Viki (business office) along with your itemized receipt. Ariba orders: Discover Park Purchase Request (DPPR) forms are no longer required with an Ariba order. If you are placing your own order through Ariba, simply create the order and submit. You do not have to attach a purchase request form. If you are working with Heather or Nancy to place an Ariba order, please email them with the required information listed below and they will place the order on your behalf. Required Information: 1. Item details with quote provided 2. Account to be charged 3. Specific benefit to the project for the items you are purchasing 4. PI approval - this can be in the form of an email Failure to provide all of these required pieces of information will necessitate additional e-mail communication and will delay the process so please be diligent in supplying this information. Reminder of Buddy System Please remember that working in a fume hood after normal working hours (5:00 pm to 7:00 am every week day, and all hours on the weekends) requires using our "Buddy System" for safety. This Buddy System is defined as having at least one additional person in the same vicinity as the person working in the fume hood. For example, working in a cleanroom fume hood requires a second person to be somewhere in the cleanroom; working in a lab fume hood requires a second person to be in that particular lab. Please make sure you follow this important safety practice. Vacuum/Process Equipment System Training A user suggested we provide online vacuum training for common vacuum operation. We believe this is an excellent idea and we're working to extend this to other systems as well. In fact we're just starting to develop some video materials for several systems that will be put online and included as part of the specific equipment training. Watch for these in the future as we get them developed, debugged, and launched. Evaporator Contamination As a reminder please do not use any flexible/organic substrates in any e-beam evaporators except the Airco and Varian. These two systems are dedicated for organic substrates but using organics in any other system causes severe contamination and requires extensive cleaning to get them back to depositing pure films. Please see these two pictures of flaking taken from the PVD Evaporator where organic substrates were used: [cid:image003.png@01D22531.2128E880][cid:image005.png@01D22531.2128E880] This level of contamination not only causes significant down time for the evaporators but also can severely degrade the performance of devices of other groups expecting clean films. The workshop will cover some basic techniques for immunolabeling and dye staining and microscope observation of live and fixed 3D cell cultures. For details on the content, please see below and the flyer attached. The prerequisite for the workshop is REM biosafety training and blood-borne-pathogen training; sufficient knowledge in basic cell culture techniques is recommended. If you are interested in the workshop, please contact me for information and registration. The workshop is limited to SIX participants. The deadline for registration is October 28, 2016. Direct Email to Birck Engineering In an effort to provide better service to our customers (the student, staff, and faculty user-community of the Birck Nanotechnology Center) we have established a new email for suggestions, complaints, recommendations for improvements & operationing efficiency, safety related issues, etc. This new email, birckengineering(a)purdue.edu<mailto:birckengineering@purdue.edu> , will go directly to engineering management and the identity of the sender will be held in strictest confidence. The intent of this new email is to allow the Birck user community to air grievances, complaints, and suggestions to make our engineering operations better. If you see an opportunity for improvement, or have a suggestion for a more streamlined operation, please share it through this email. Answers will be provided with as much expediency as possible, and the identity of the sender will not be revealed, so please use this to 'open up' about our procedures, processes, priorities, and performance (the 4-P's). We can't address issues if we don't know them, so we're encouraging faculty, staff, and students to use this new email mechanism to bring issues to light. Gates Road closing on Monday

Gates Road closes Monday for two weeks Gates Road, located off of Nimitz Drive near the Hall for Discovery and Learning Research (DLR), will close to through traffic on Monday (Oct. 10) for approximately two weeks to facilitate utility work in the area. For a portion of this timeframe, the dock area of the Bindley Bioscience Center will not be accessible via the southern entrance of Gates Road. The Bindley Bioscience Center Dock will still be accessible from the temporary access road, running through the parking lot of Purdue Village Building 136, and by using Marshall Drive. Pedestrians and motorists should be cautious in the area and plan their routes accordingly. New e-beam tool for Birck! - please do not distribute to non-Purdue people

Dear all, Through the start-up funds of Prof. Bhave and Prof. Weinstein as well as generous support from Discovery Park, EVPRP and Birck, we have been able to purchase a new e-beam tool for Birck. This is a newly developed system with state-of-the-art capabilities (please see attached). In addition, we have negotiated a partnership agreement with Jeol that will make Birck and Purdue a central node in the country. We expect companies and researchers to access this tool about 1-2 times per month (Jeol will compensate us for this), which is also likely to generate good publicity for us. Furthermore, we have also negotiated four (4) years of full support for the tool up front. Jeol has agreed to place at least one service engineer stationed in Chicago for quick response to our needs. We expect the new tool to arrive to Purdue by the end of June 2017. The timing depends a bit on clearing customs and other paperwork. In the meantime we will be working on preparing the Birck facilities for this. Since this new tool will replace our VB6, we will need to discontinue usage of the VB6 a few months before the arrival of the new system to prepare the space and make the necessary repairs and modifications to the stage. Once we know more, we will share details. We are currently under an NDA with Jeol about this, so this email and the attachment are only for us within Purdue. Please do not share this information with non-Purdue people yet. Once some final details are figured out, there will be a press release from Jeol and Purdue that will include more details. We expect this to happen around December 2016. I would like to thank everyone involved in the process and particularly Profs. Bhave, Qi, and Weinstein for providing critical technical input in this process.
