Jurss CIH, CSP Safety Manager Cell Culture Basic Training Workshop Dear Fellow Scientists, Starting with spring 2017, the 3D Cell Culture Core (3D3C) facility plans to run a series of three workshops covering basic cell culture techniques, basic 3D cell culture techniques and microscopic visualization of 3D cell cultures once every semester. You may choose to attend one or several workshops in the series. A 5% discount will be offered to individuals who register for two workshops and a 10% discount will be applied for registration to the three workshops within the semester. Presenter: Hasan Sharifi, PhD Department Manager, Millimeter Wave Subsystems, HRL Laboratories Birck 1001 at 1:30 pm Title: An overview of HRL capability and projects Short Abstract: In this presentation, first an overview of HRL capability that may help initiate future collaborations with Purdue is presented. Then, a public-domain highlight of multiple projects geared towards mm-wave technology and mm-wave sub-systems are presented. These projects cover a wide range of activities from building devices and components to integrating sub-systems through design, device fabrication and technology development. These technologies also cover a wide electromagnetic spectrum (RF and mmW to IR) for various applications such as Radar, EW, Comm. and Night Vision sensors. Short Bio: Hasan Sharifi is currently department manager and a senior research staff scientist for millimeter wave subsystems group at HRL Laboratories, Malibu, CA. He received his PhD degree in the area of Microelectronics and Nanotechnology from Purdue University, West Lafayette in 2007. His research topics include design and fabrication of RF, microwave and millimeter wave components based on silicon or III-V technologies (InP, GaN), radar sensors, as well as infrared imaging systems. Before joining HRL, he was a research staff member at Birck Nanotechnology Center, Purdue University from 2005 to 2009 working on CMOS-based RF integrated circuits as well as advanced heterogeneous integration and packaging. Dr. Sharifi is the recipient of a number of awards, including special and extraordinary merit awards from Purdue University and HRL Labs. He has served as a technical program committee and editor for the IEEE Silicon Monolithic Integrated Circuits in RF Systems Conference. He is a senior member of IEEE and member of Microwave Theory and Techniques and Advanced Packaging societies. Prof Mohammadi will host this event. Winter Recess All User Meeting Laser Capture Microdissection - Workshop Announcement 3D3C 2017 Workshop Announcement Construction Notice Winter Recess With the extended break this year between the Christmas and New Year's holidays the university will be closed for 11 days in a row, beginning Friday, December 23rd and concluding Tuesday morning, January 3rd. This represents a challenge for us to maintain some limited research capability while the university is officially closed with no staff members present. Therefore the Birck Nanotechnology Center will implement the following policy for the duration of this time period: 1. No toxic, flammable, or hazardous gases will be available. This includes hydrogen, methane, silane, dichlorosilane, ammonia, nitric oxide, chlorine, KrF. These gases will be shut off at the source and no processes using these gases will be allowed. 2. Cleanroom and laboratory operations will still be available as long as they don't use any hazardous gases. 3. Fume hoods will be open for use but please make sure someone else is nearby if you're going to work alone in the hood. 4. Stocked materials should be especially conserved by all users as no deliveries to the university will occur during this period, and stocking of on-hand materials may occur on a very limited basis. 5. Cleanroom users should continue to re-use their cleanroom gowns and other garments as much as possible since the shipping of used garments to our laundering supplier will be unavailable during this time. 6. No staff will be working normal hours but some may intermittently stop in for brief walk-throughs and checks. Thank you for your support of this extended period of time for staff, faculty, and students to enjoy time off with family and to refresh. These workshops, limited to six participants in order to facilitate hands-on training, have been run more than eight times encompassing at least 40 participants from campus. Starting with spring 2017, we plan to run these three workshops once every semester as a series for people to choose based on their needs or enjoy as a complete set. Dates and costs are listed in the table (discount is available for multiple workshops as explained in the last paragraph). Lesker Film Quality A user mentioned that films from the Lesker are of bad quality. Dave is working this issue. One indication is that poor adhesion occurs when thick positive photoresist is used, and a curling effect can be seen near the edges of features. We're working with the equipment supplier to make hardware & software adjustments to spread the beam out more across the crucible. This would potentially reduce the temperature at the substrate which would then cause less heat related curling of the underlying photoresist. Please see Dave for updates, and/or for other options that might be available now and in the future.
