Cahill<https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/birck/events/?view=2112> Current Understanding and Unsolved Problems in Thermal Transport at the Nanoscale JUNE 5, 2019 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM BRK 1001 Abstract: Thermal conductivity is a basic and familiar property of materials: silver spoons conduct heat well and plastic does not. In recent years, the combined efforts of materials scientists, engineers, physicists, and chemists have succeeded in pushing-back long-established limits in the thermal conductivity of materials and have made exciting progress on methods for dynamic control of thermal conductivity. In this lecture, I will highlight a three topics that I consider to be important unsolved problems in thermal conduction in materials: 1) ultralow thermal conductivity in hard and soft matter; 2) heat transport by magnetic excitations; and 3) solid-state approaches for thermal regulators and thermal switches. Bio: David Cahill is the Willett Professor of Engineering and Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined the faculty of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the U. Illinois after earning his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from Cornell University, and working as a postdoctoral research associate at the IBM Watson Research Center. His current research program focuses on developing a microscopic understanding of thermal transport at the nanoscale; extremes of low and high thermal conductivity in materials; the interactions between phonons, electrons, photons, and spin; and the kinetics and thermodynamics of aqueous and electrochemical interfaces with materials. He received the 2018 Innovation in Materials Characterization Award of the Materials Research Society (MRS); the 2015 Touloukian Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; the Peter Mark Memorial Award of the American Vacuum Society (AVS); and is a fellow of the MRS, AVS, and APS (American Physical Society).

Three major tasks will happen during this closure. 1) Required repair of our 3000 amp building power feed that failed on February 3 requiring a shutdown of all building HVAC systems, anticipated to last 2-3 hours to repair. 2) A capital project integration of the cleanroom chemical exhaust system involves cutting into the cleanroom chemical exhaust in four locations to connect 20,000 CFM exhaust system involving a complete rebalance of the cleanroom static pressure, anticipated to last 3-5 days. 3) Finally complete the normal spring preventive maintenance activities, anticipated to last 2-3 days. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, June 10 through 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until repairs and modification activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, June 10 through 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Tuesday, June 18. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability. For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance closures. Week of Oct 14, 2019 Spring May 4, 2020 Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these important closures. Please contact me if you need more detailed information. We are launching an internal search to identify individuals with demonstrated leadership and vision for the positions of Associate Director for Operations and the Associate Director for Research. The Associate Directors should be members of the Purdue Faculty with the rank of tenured Associate or Full Professor. Mary Jo and Kyle will be working on different computers in the building, but please plan on having shipments in to us the day before. EM Core Dear BNC Community, the EM core at Birck will be merging with other EM cores on campus to form the Purdue EM Super Core. As part of the transition, in a couple of weeks, will be moving all content from Birck EM iLab to the Purdue EM iLab website: https://purdue.ilabsolutions.com/sc/3985/purdue-electron-microscopy-facilit… Please use the link above to make reservations, training and services request. Also, the new state-of-the-art microscopes at Birck are online. More information will be posted on the Birck website as well as on the iLab Purdue EM Facility, however the new systems are the Themis Z Aberration Corrected Monochromated S/TEM with EDX and EELS capabilities, the Helios G4 Dual Beam SEM/FIB with EDX capabilities, and the Apreos SEM in the cleanroom. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, June 10 through 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until repairs and modification activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, June 10 through 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Tuesday, June 18. Mark Voorhis Building Manager Birck Nanotechnology Center Birck Nanotechnology Center Fire Alarm Testing May 9, 2019 From 5AM to 7AM The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be performing fire alarm tests on May 9, 2019 from 5AM to 7AM. Due to Sub Fab construction changes Purdue Fire Equipment Services (FES) will need to complete a building wide fire alarm testing. This will involve all fire horns sounding and strobe lights flashing as if we were having a fire alarm. On May 9, 2019 at 5AM FES will make 2 announcements over the building wide public address system informing everyone in the center about the fire testing and not to evacuate the building. One announcement will be made 5 minutes before fire testing begins and a second announcement just before activating all fire horns and strobes. Once the fire test is complete then a final announcement will be made over the building wide public address system informing everyone that the fire alarm testing is complete and to evacuate the building on future alarms. EM Core Dear BNC Community, the EM core at Birck will be merging with other EM cores on campus to form the Purdue EM Super Core. The course aims to teach (1) what analysis should be applied to raw XPS data and (2) how this can be done using CasaXPS. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of XPS data using CasaXPS will be discussed in detail as well. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops to follow data analysis using CasaXPS.
