There will be a major electrical power outage involving all research equipment in the center. During our electrical bus duct failure back in February is was discovered that main power to all research equipment has the same issue that caused the failure in February. ELECTRICAL work is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, October 14, 2019. EVERY GENERAL LAB, MAIN CLEANROOM & BIO CLEANROOM AREAS WILL LOOSE POWER TO RESEARCH EQUIPMENT DURING THIS TIME. ALSO ALL BUILDING WIDE MAJOR UTILITIES WILL BE LOST INCLUDING Compressed Air, Process Vacuum, Process Cooling Water, Ultra Pure Water, Acid Waste System, & ETC. Research equipment on UPS or generator power will not be affected. Power will be lost to all conference rooms and office areas as well so please plan accordingly to safely power down all office computers and electronic devises in your offices prior to the outage. All air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 14 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 18 to complete our preventative maintenance activities. Best regards, Ali ******************* SEMINAR Going Below the Ice- The Next Steps to Enable Subsurface Science on Icy Worlds Emily Klonicki and Richard Kidd (NASA JPL) Monday August 26, 2019 1:30-2:30pm Birck 1001 NASA has posed "Big Questions" to motivate planetary exploration, including how life evolved, what characteristics lead to life, and whether we are alone. Ocean Worlds are bodies that may have past or extant interior global oceans, such as Europa, Enceladus, and Ceres, and are hypothesized to have habitable regions within their icy crusts. This has driven scientific communities to consider in situ exploration of these bodies. Autonomous ice penetrators build upon the capabilities of classical surface landers, enabling new opportunities for planetary science investigations. By design, penetrators are able to embed instrumentation into the ice crust, continuously ingest surrounding melt water to sample on descent, provide data with depth, and potentially deploy ocean-faring mobility platforms. Ice descent probes are highly integrated, imposing several challenges in regard to scientific instrumentation selection, configuration, and operation. Subsurface vehicle instruments would inherently be compact and robust to withstand both the physical constraints of the vehicle and surrounding environment, making it essential for NASA and the science community to identify risks and dependencies across instrument technology trades. Additionally, strong practices in Planetary Protection are critical to prevent biological contamination and maintain scientific integrity for life detection instruments. We will discuss the science goals, instrument concepts, and technological challenges in building and operating subsurface instrumentation on decent probes, as well as future work that would enable these endeavors. Emily Klonicki is a Planetary Protection Engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA. Her work focuses on managing the forward and backward risk of transferring microbial contaminants between earth and other planetary bodies for the Europa Clipper and Europa Lander missions. Prior to joining the Biotechnology and Planetary Protection Group, Emily developed a diverse research background that spans the fields of epigenetics, microbiology, and environmental engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. At JPL she has been actively involved in evaluating filtration methodologies for Mars 2020 instrumentation, investigating fungal growth in simulated microgravity, and fungal degradation of plastics for waste management on the International Space Station. Recent research activities include investigations into dry heat inactivation of microorganisms embedded in aerospace materials and short-duration, high-temperature heat sterilization as part of the Europa Lander Planetary Protection implementation team. Emily is also the instrument lead for a subsurface ocean access mission concept and is involved in several collaborative research projects focused on water chemistry monitoring systems and biosensors. Richard Kidd's experience ranges from microfluidics, biomedical and biochemical science and formulation to instrumentation and spaceflight, with settings (both in the laboratory and in the field) in private industry, university and government in several countries. At JPL, he is involved in the scientific exploration of space, in particular, the research, planning, testing and/or operations of in situ instrumentation. Richard has over twenty years of experience in chemical research and applications. He was the Lead for the ISS-residing Vehicle Cabin Atmosphere Monitor (VCAM) pre-concentrator/gas chromatograph (PCGC). He has been on two field trips to Antarctica (2001 and 2005) including one trip to test instrumentation in extreme environments (the McMurdo Dry Valleys). Richard has also flown on NASA's zero-G simulator jet on three experimental/educational campaigns. He also is the Discipline Program Manager at JPL for five NASA research programs (EXO, LARS, HW, ANGSA, Ideals Lab) as well as an SBIR/STTR Subtopic Manager. Additionally, he is involved in a number of educational and outreach activities including mentoring high school, undergraduate, graduate students, postdocs and contractors. Currently, he is the subsystem lead on two flight projects, the PCGC on the ISS-bound Spacecraft Atmosphere Monitor (S.A.M.) and Process Monitoring & Control on the Mars2020-bound Mars OXygen In situ resource utilization Experiment (MOXIE). *******************

Dear Birck Community, Dr. Tim Kwok, Manager of the BNC 3-D Cell Culture facility, has left Purdue to pursue an opportunity in a large cancer research institution in Philadelphia. We thank Tim for his service to Purdue and Birck, and we wish him well in his new endeavors. His last day at Purdue was Friday, August 9th. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Shirisha Chittiboyina, currently a senior post-doctoral research scientist in Professor Sophie Lelièvre's laboratory in Lynn Hall, is the interim manager of the Birck 3-D Cell Culture facility. Shirisha will pick up the duties of Tim and maintain the 3D3C projects and activities. A number of options are being considered for the longer term, and Shirisha will make sure research projects continue until the direction for further development of 3D3C is determined. Please join us in welcoming Shirisha to the Birck family, and wishing Tim well in his new position. As an example, economy parking is $9 per day at the Indianapolis International Airport, and that rate would be used to reimburse business travelers for parking expenses. If a traveler opts for a more expensive parking method at the departing airport including but not limited to valet or hourly parking, the additional costs would not be reimbursed by Purdue. The University's preferred airport parking provider, FastPark & Relax, is less expensive than the daily economy rate. Travelers are encouraged to sign up for rewards and make reservations in advance to guarantee parking at one of the participating locations. A number of benefits include covered parking spaces, on-demand shuttle service between the vehicle and airport with no waiting, emergency car services and 24/7 online access to receipts. The discounted rates are available for both business and personal travel for Purdue employees, though only expenses related to business travel will be reimbursed. Beginning Oct. 1, 2020, airlines will require travelers to possess and provide identification that meets federal requirements. This identification, known as a Real ID, has a star in the upper-right corner of the driver's license, permit or identification card.
