Announcements **************** 1.1: REMINDER: Cleanroom Preventive Maintenance, May 1-2, 2007 Per Mark Voorhis, a shut down of cleanroom operations has been scheduled for 48 hours to complete a six-month preventive maintenance procedure. A shutdown of cleanroom operations will begin on Tuesday (1-May-07) at 7:00 AM and will be completed by Wednesday (2-May-07) at 5:00 PM. Maintenance is required for our cleanroom makeup air handlers, chemical exhaust, and ultra pure water systems. Please note that the ultra pure water will be shut down for the entire building. We will also complete cleanroom troubleshooting to improve temperature repeatability during this time. Since the chemical exhaust system will be shut down please remove chemicals from all hoods in the cleanroom prior to the shutdown. If not removed, the lab staff will dispose of them for you. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this necessary procedure. Seminar Announcements ************************ 3.1: Monday, April 23, 2007 9:30am: Technology Challenges of the 21st Century, by Dr. Eugene S. Meieran ABSTRACT: The 20th century was a century of remarkable scientific and technical achievement, as recorded in the National Academy of Engineering book, "A Century of Innovation". Three forces ("a perfect storm") combined to make this possible; almost universal availability of electric power to enable many of the other achievements, the breakthroughs in fundamental understanding in physics, mathematics and engineering that provided the intellectual impetus, and the huge amount of capital expenditures that went into ships, railroads, factories, power stations, equipment and so forth, that allowed these engineering accomplishments to be made available to a vast audience at affordable costs. The airplane, telephone, computer, automobile, refrigeration, nuclear power plants, clean water supplies, etc., were all enabled by these three forces. In order to make the 21st century as productive in terms of benefiting human society, similar but different forces are at play. Instead of providing power, in this century, we will be fueled by providing information and knowledge. Instead of leveraging huge physical capital expenditures, we will invest in intellectual assets; what people know rather than what they own. And perhaps not replacing mathematics and science, we will augment this with information science, biological science and medical science. So again we have the capability of harnessing a "perfect storm" to make the 21st century as beneficial to human society and quality of life as was the 20th century. In this talk I will discuss these factors and how we as a society need to embrace the concept of innovation in order to take advantage of what's being offered. We need to understand the roles of industry, government and academia in enabling the harnessing of these forces to take place. BIO: Dr. Eugene Meieran has served on several government and industry panels dealing with manufacturing technology and policy issues, such as the Coalition for Intelligent Manufacturing Systems and the Next Generation Manufacturing Systems Advanced Manufacturing Systems board. He has made extensive contributions in the areas of materials analysis techniques, semiconductor processing, semiconductor device reliability, statistical quality control and industrial leadership. Dr. Meieran has been at Intel since 1973 and has been responsible for introducing advanced technologies and applications into Intels component manufacturing facilities to help improve manufacturing performance. Additionally, Dr. Meieran has been heavily involved in numerous external manufacturing technology and policy programs. He received a B.S. from Purdue University and an M.S. and Sc.D. from MIT, all in materials science. He was elected as Distinguished Engineering Alumnus in 1987 and an Honorary Doctorate in 2004, Purdue University, he served on the NRC Committee for Visionary Manufacturing Challenges in 1996-1998, and he has been on the Scientific and Education Advisory Board for Lawrence Berkeley Labs. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He was Director of Research for MIT's Leaders for Manufacturing Program from 1996 to 2000. 3.2: Monday, April 23, 2007, 10:30am: PlasmonicsBuilding Nanophotonics with Metals, Alexandra (Sasha) Boltasseva, BRK 1001 ABSTRACT: Today, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that represent two-dimensional electromagnetic waves propagating along a dielectric-metal interface are being explored for their potential in subwavelength optics, photonic integrated circuits, data storage, light generation, microscopy and bio-sensing. One of the most attractive features of SPPs is that they can help to concentrate and channel light using subwavelength structures. This could lead to miniaturized photonic circuits with length scales much smaller than those currently achieved. Giving the possibility of using the same metal circuitry for guiding light and transmitting electrical signals, plasmonics paves the way to efficient control of optical signals in integrated optical circuits. In this talk, different metal-dielectric geometries are considered for efficient excitation and guiding of SPPs. Planar plasmonic waveguides based on nm-thin and µm-wide metal strips embedded in a polymer that support propagation of long-range SPPs are shown to constitute an alternative for integrated optical circuits. For applications where polarization is random or changing, metal nanowire waveguides are considered to be suitable candidates for efficient guiding of arbitrary polarized light. Plasmonic waveguides based on metal v-grooves that were recently shown to have superior features for subwavelength guiding, such as relatively low propagation loss and strong confinement, are also considered. For different waveguide geometries issues like main loss contributions, propagation loss vs. confinement and fabrication challenges are discussed. In this presentation, recent advances in manufacturing of nanostructured metal surfaces for plasmonic structures are also discussed. BIO: Dr. Alexandra (Sasha) Boltasseva received M. Sc. degree in Physics, with highest honors, from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 2000 and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in 2004. After industrial experience with companies Micro Managed Photons A/S and Alight Technologies A/S, she joined as a postdoc the Department of Communications, Optics & Materials at DTU, where she is currently an Assistant Professor. View complete agenda and register at www.purdue.edu/dp/dls/rche. 3.7: Wednesday, April 25, 12:30pm: Quantum Computation for Quantum Chemistry and Statistical Mechanics, by Prof. Alan Aspuru-Guzik, Harvard University, WTHR 201 ABSTRACT: In this talk, we introduce two algorithms for the use of quantum computers for chemical applications. First, we describe a quantum algorithm for the calculation of molecular energies. The calculation time for the energy of atoms and molecules scales exponentially with system size on a classical computer, but polynomially using quantum algorithms. We demonstrate that such algorithms can be applied to problems of chemical interest using modest numbers of quantum bits. In the second part of the talk, we introduce an algorithm for finding protein low-energy conformations using a quantum computer. The algorithm uses the adiabatic model of quantum computation to anneal the system to solutions of the problem. BIO: Professor Aspuru-Guzik obtained his B.Sc. from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He studied his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University since 2006. His research interests are in the intersection of theoretical physical chemistry and quantum information. In particular, the development of quantum algorithms for the simulation of physical systems. He is also interested in algorithms for many-body physics (density functional theory and quantum Monte Carlo) and the understanding of the fundamental processes of charge and energy transfer in photovoltaic materials. 3.8: Wednesday, April 25, 2:00pm: Modeling and Analysis of VLSI Interconnects, by Cheng-Kok Koh, Purdue University, EE 317 ABSTRACT: With continual technology scaling, the accurate and efficient modeling and simulation of interconnect effects have become problems of central importance. In order to accurately model the distributive effects of interconnects, it is necessary to divide a long wire into several segments, with each regarded as a lumped RLC element. In this tutorial, two fundamental problems in the modeling and analysis of VLSI interconnects will be covered: (i) capacitance extraction and (ii) simulation of interconnects with inductive coupling. For capacitance extraction, one approach is to use a boundary element technique for solving the integral form of Laplace equations. Such an approach usually involves an iterative solver whose most expensive operation is matrix-vector multiply. The tutorial will include a fast multi-pole method that relies on a hierarchical data structure to perform matrix-vector multiply in linear time complexity. The second part of the tutorial will introduce a fast simulation technique for inductively coupled interconnects based on the notion of wire-duplication. The technique exploits the sparsity resident in the inverse of a inductance matrix to construct a small-sized equivalent RLC circuit. The wire-duplication technique improves simulation efficiency significantly while preserving simulation accuracy. BIO: Prof. Koh received the Ph.D. degree in computer science from University of California at Los Angeles. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. His research interests include physical design of high-performance low-power VLSI circuits, with an emphasis on VLSI interconnect layout optimization. He received the ACM Special Interest Group on Design Automation (SIGDA) Meritorious Service Award in 1998 and the SIGDA Distinguished Service Award in 2002, the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2000, and the Semiconductor Research Corporation Inventor Recognition Award in 2005. 3.9: Thursday, April 26, 9:30am, reception follows: Microscale Platforms for Applications in Global Health Diagnostics, by Dr. William Rodriguez, Harvard University, MRGN 121 ABSTRACT: Of the 40 million people living with HIV infection worldwide, fewer than 10% are aware that theyre infected. Fewer than 500,000 have access to the blood tests (CD4 cell counts and HIV RNA levels) essential for effective treatment. Of the 5,000 people dying each day from tuberculosis, half are undiagnosed; the best available test for diagnosing TB the light microscope was invented 350 years ago. Diagnostic tests for other major global diseases dengue, malaria, typhoid fever, diarrhea are equally unusable in resource-limited settings, like sub-Saharan Africa, where the global burden of disease rests. Can advances in microfabrication, microfluidics, MEMS, and biosensing be applied to the development of diagnostics for these diseases? Can they be made into truly point-of-care diagnostic products, against unforgiving specifications? We have applied these technologies to global health, and made progress in point-of-care devices for CD4 cell counting, HIV RNA measurement, and TB diagnosis. To be reviewed will be the biological, technical, product development, intellectual property, funding, and commercialization challenges to unleashing the potential of bioengineering methods to have a major impact on global health. Dr. Bill Rodriguez is an honors graduate of Brown University and the Yale University School of Medicine. He completed training in internal medicine and infectious disease at Harvards Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident in 199899. Since 2001, he has led a research program in global health at Harvards Partners AIDS Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He is the co-inventor of several microtechnologies for HIV diagnostics, including low-cost methods for HIV RNA and CD4 cell counting. He has served as the Director of the Office forInternational Programs at the Harvard Medical School Division of AIDS, and has worked on scale-up of HIV clinical and laboratory programs in the eastern Caribbean, throughout Africa, and in Vietnam, India, and China. Since 2002, he has worked with the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative, as Senior HIV Advisor, as director of the Foundations HIV operations research initiative, and as Chief Medical Officer. He serves as an expert consultant on HIV care, treatment, laboratory diagnostics and research in resource-poor settings for several national governments, for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and for the National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization. He has been a member of the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School since 1997, and is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also the recipient the Class of 2005 First-Year Teaching Award at Harvard Medical School for excellence in teaching. 3.10: Friday, April 27, 3:30pm, refreshments served: Introduction to X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and to XPS Applications, by Dmitry Zemlyanov, MRGN 121 ABSTRACT: X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), which is known as Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA), is a powerful research tool for the study of the surface of solids. The technique is widely used for studies of the properties of atoms, molecules, solids, and surfaces. The main success of the XPS technique is associated with studies of the physical and chemical phenomena on the surface of solids. These investigations were limited by relatively simple inorganic reactions and not many biologically related objects were approached by XPS. There are impartial reasons for low involvement of XPS into investigations of biologically related objects. In this presentation successful examples of XPS studies of bio-related specimens will be presented. In particular, the systematic XPS investigation of four peptide-silane and peptide-silane hybrid sol-gel thin films prepared under biologically benign conditions will be reported. This work demonstrates a use for XPS to characterized biologically inspired surfaces, providing critical information on peptide coverage on the surface of the materials. The self-assembling layer characterization will be considered on the examples of thiols on Au and aryl diazonium molecules on Si(111). BIO: Dmitry Zemlyanov received his PhD in Physics and Mathematics from the Novosibirsk State University, Russia. He is currently a Surface Science Application Scientist at the Birck Nanotechnology Center and he is in charge for the Surface Analysis Facility at Birck. Earlier, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Fritz-Haber-Institute, Berlin, at Worchester Polytechnic Institute, MA; an adjunct assistant professor at the Physics Department, Worchester Polytechnic Institute, MA, and a research fellow at Material and Surface Science Institute, University of Limerick, Ireland. Hi to all, We have encountered a problem with the Liquid Nitrogen system at BNC, this effects liquid only . This means there is no LN2 available for filling of dewars or any equipment that requires LN2. However you can place an order to a vendor or contact me at 6-1174 and I can order them for you. This session is limited to 10 participants; alternate training can be coordinated with Paula Vitello at REM. 1.2: REMINDER: Cleanroom Preventive Maintenance, May 1-2, 2007 Per Mark Voorhis, a shut down of cleanroom operations has been scheduled for 48 hours to complete a six-month preventive maintenance procedure. A shutdown of cleanroom operations will begin on Tuesday (1-May-07) at 7:00 AM and will be completed by Wednesday (2-May-07) at 5:00 PM. Maintenance is required for our cleanroom makeup air handlers, chemical exhaust, and ultra pure water systems. Please note that the ultra pure water will be shut down for the entire building. We will also complete cleanroom troubleshooting to improve temperature repeatability during this time. Since the chemical exhaust system will be shut down please remove chemicals from all hoods in the cleanroom prior to the shutdown. If not removed, the lab staff will dispose of them for you. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this necessary procedure. Seminar Announcements ************************ 3.1: Tuesday, April 10, 1:00 pm, Lawson 3102AB: "ChemXSeer: A Digitial Library for Chemical Kinetics Data and Scientific Literature," by Prasenjit Mitra, Assistant Professor, College of Information Sciences and Technology, Pennsylvania State University ABSTRACT: Scientists have digital documents and experimental data that they want to publish, link, and share. ChemXSeer is an ongoing project that aims to establish a digital library for documents and data related to chemical kinetics. This talk will introduce the architecture and algorithms deployed for the following components: (a) Chemical Entity Search: The tool identifies chemical formulae and chemical names, disambiguates the terms from other general terms using hierarchical Conditional Random Fields, and tags them. Novel similarity scores, ranking functions and search methods are introduced to enable searching for chemical entities; (b) TableSeer: This tool automatically identifies tables in digital documents and extracts the contents in the cells of the tables. The contents are stored in a queryable table in a database. TableSeer extracts table metadata, and uses a novel ranking function to search for tables relevant to user queries; (c) Databases: Our data repository contains experimental data obtained from various sources. Our tools can process, store and link data in multiple formats, e.g., Excel, XML, Gaussian, and Charmm. A metadata ad-on can help annotate the data and link multiple datasets. The metadata is then used to link the data to published articles allow the end-user to search for relevant data. The talk will briefly cover our efforts on novel focused crawling algorithms and query expansion to enhance search and rewriting techniques to utilize the limited resources available at hand and to enhance the quality of the search respectively. BIO: Prasenjit Mitra is an assistant professor at the College of Information Sciences and Technology at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the database group at Stanford University in 2004. Prior to that, he had received a Master of Science degree in Computer Science at The University of Texas at Austin in December 1994. His Bachelor of Technology (with Honors) degree in Computer Science and Engineering was received from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in May, 1993. From 1995, he was a senior member of the technical staff at the Server Technologies division at Oracle Corporation in Redwood Shores, CA for five years developing database management systems software. He also held a position as a senior engineer at Narus, Inc. and DBWizards working on database applications. Dr. Mitra's research interests are in database systems, digital libraries, information retrieval, and web information systems. He is especially interested in scalable information integration from large data sources in distributed settings and making data and information on the world-wide-web easily processable by machines. 3.2: Wednesday, April 11, 2:00 pm, EE 317: "Sugar: The Spice for MEMS," by Jason Clark, Assistant Professor, Schools of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Network for Computational Nanotechnology, Purdue University ABSTRACT: In this seminar, I present some design, modeling, and simulation features of a computer aided engineering tool for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) called SUGAR. For experimental verification, I use a microdevice that is difficult to simulate with conventional MEMS software. I show that the relative errors of the lumped models are less than 3% of finite element analysis; that the computational costs are much less than 1% of finite element analysis; and that simulation fairly agrees with experiment. Features of SUGAR include: a flexible SPICE-like netlist language for MEMS design; a simple modeling framework for computationally efficient lumped models; an extensible architecture to which users can add features; and the ability to display 3D circuits together with deflected electromechanical structures. Since SUGAR is programmed in MATLAB, a multitude of commonly used functions and 3rd-party toolboxes may be used with SUGAR at once. Such attributes facilitate the exploration of design spaces and feature modifications. BIO: Jason Clark is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and of Mechanical Engineering, at Purdue University. He is a faculty member of the Birck Nanotechnology Center, and of the Network for Computational Nanotechnology. Dr. Clark received his Ph.D. in Applied Science from the University of California at Berkeley, fall 2005. His CAD/E efforts lead to one of the first nodal analysis software packages for MEMS, called SUGAR. And his micro-metrology efforts lead to the first comprehensive on-chip methods for measuring micro-scale geometry and material properties, called electro micro-metrology (EMM). Of the 40 million people living with HIV infection worldwide, fewer than 10% are aware that they¹re infected. Fewer than 500,000 have access to the blood tests (CD4 cell counts and HIV RNA levels) essential for effective treatment. Of the 5,000 people dying each day from tuberculosis, half are undiagnosed; the best available test for diagnosing TB the light microscope was invented 350 years ago. Diagnostic tests for other major global diseases dengue, malaria, typhoid fever, diarrhea are equally unusable in resource-limited settings, like sub-Saharan Africa, where the global burden of disease rests. Can advances in microfabrication, microfluidics, MEMS, and biosensing be applied to the development of diagnostics for these diseases? Can they be made into truly point-of-care diagnostic products, against unforgiving specifications? We have applied these technologies to global health, and made progress in point-of-care devices for CD4 cell counting, HIV RNA measurement, and TB diagnosis. A review of the biological, technical, product development, intellectual property, funding, and commercialization challenges to unleashing the potential of bioengineering methods to have a major impact on global health will be presented. **************** 2. After graduating from the Pontifical Academy for Ecclesiastical Diplomacy, he joined the Holy See¹s diplomatic service. He served in Angola as attaché and second secretary to the Apostolic Delegation; as alternate Observer to the Organization of American States; as Apostolic Nunciature in Egypt and Warsaw, Poland; and as the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France. In 1995, he was appointed Under-Secretary of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State at the Vatican, where he also fostered relations with several Asian countries without formal diplomatic relations with the Holy See, traveling to Beijing, Hanoi, and P¹yongyang as Head of Delegation of the Holy See. In 2001, he led the Delegation of the Holy See to the United Nations Conference on Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons and to other conferences, symposia and panels held in various European capitals on issues related to the World Trade Organization, the Economic Commission for Europe, the European Union, and the Middle East. Archbishop Migliore has given numerous statements at the United Nations on a wide range of current issues and has delivered many addresses at conferences, colleges, and universities. 3.3: Wednesday, March 28, 2:00pm, EE 317: ³Molecular Interferometry,² by David Nolte, Physics Department; NCN/INAC 501 Tutorial ABSTRACT and BIO not available for this announcement. 3.4: Thursday, March 29, 10:30am, BRK 1001: ³Nitride Metal/Semiconductor Multilayers and Superlattices for Solid State Thermionic Energy Conversion,² by Vijay Rawat, doctoral candidate, Materials Engineering, Purdue University ABSTRACT: The recognition in the 1990¹s that nanostructured materials have the potential to significantly enhance the performance of solid-state energy conversion devices prompted an increase in research activity that has been bolstered recently by the current energy/global warming crisis. Thermoelectricity is a type of solid state energy conversion process where the thermal gradient across a bulk material is used to generate electrical power. Thermoelectric devices are potentially applicable in multiple areas such as waste heat recovery systems for automobiles and power plants, steam-free powering of naval vessels, thermal management in integrated chips and terrestrial power generators employing concentrator solar cells. Although much work has been done on development of bulk and thin-film nanostructured thermoelectric materials, these material are not yet efficient enough to compete with conventional power generators. Recently, a different approach for thermal-to-electrical energy conversion was proposed that utilizes thermionic transport in metal-semiconductor multilayers or superlattices with nanoscale periods, unlike the diffusive transport in conventional thermoelectrics (Mahan et. al., PRL (1998), Shakouri et. al. APL (1997)). Subsequent theoretical work showed that cross-plane transport through such metal/semiconductor superlattices has the potential to yield values of the figure-of-merit that are much higher than those of currently available thermoelectric materials. The primary challenge involved in realizing a solid-state thermionic energy converter is selecting materials suitable for fabrication of stable superlattices with a high degree of crystalline order. The integration of materials with disparate electrical and physical properties in superlattices with nanoscale periods requires consideration of several aspects of materials compatibility, including a) the similarity in crystal structures and lattice parameters necessary to initiate and sustain superlattice growth, b) the thermodynamic stability of the constituent materials at high operating temperatures required for thermionic generators (hot side temperatures of 300 to 650°C), and c) comparable surface and interfacial energies to maintain a Frank-van der Merwe (i.e. layer-by-layer) growth mode. Considering all these constraints, we have identified TiN/GaN and ScN/ZrN as two potential material systems and in this presentation, I will discuss the suitability of these materials for thermionic energy converters. I will also present the preliminary structural, thermal and electrical measurements of these material systems. BIO: Vijay Rawat is a doctoral candidate in Materials Engineering at Purdue University and has been working with Prof. Tim Sands since 2004. He received his Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (India) in 2001, and his MS in Materials Engineering from Purdue University in 2003. 3.5: Friday, March 30, 10:30, BRK 2001: ³III/V Nanowires for Nanoelectronics,² by Werner Prost, University of Duisburg-Essen ABSTRACT: The vapor-liquid-solid growth mode provides high quality crystals wires at the diameter of the nanoscaled seed element. This approach offers the growth of highly mismatched materials due a gradual lattice constant matching of substrate to the wire material. This talk addresses promising combinations of III/V materials to standard substrates like GaAs, InP and Silicon. Moreover, both electronic and optoelectronic will be presented exhibiting already high performance, i.e. the transconductance of InAs FET in excess of 4 S/mm exceeds any other III/V or silicon based approach. Finally, the challenge of integration technologies for a future monolihtic implementation in large scale circuits will be addressed. BIO: Werner Prost is member of the technical staff at the University Duisburg-Essen. He received the PhD degree in electrical engineering from Duisburg University in 1989. His main interest is to contribute to the development of electronic- and optoelectronic devices at the nanoscale for communication technology by means of advanced heterostructure technology. He has (co-)authored more than 170 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings. Prost is a member of the Center of Excellence SFB 445 ³Nanopartikels from the Gas phase² and of the Priority Program SPP 1165 ³Nanowires and Nanotubes,² the ³German Crystal Growth Association,² and an overseas member of the technical group on electron devices of the Japanese Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers. 3.6: Friday, March 30, 3:30pm, MSEE B012: ³Interface Properties from Their Equilibrium Fluctuations,² by Moneesh Upmanyu, Colorado School of Mines ABSTRACT: Thermodynamic and kinetic properties of interfaces play a central role in the interplay between growth and form of interfacial microstructures. Due to the limitations associated with accessible spatio-temporal scales in experiments and also in atomic-scale simulations, extracting these properties has been challenging. In this talk, I will present our recent work on theoretical frameworks and associated computational techniques aimed at extracting equilibrium interface properties, mainly their mobility and stiffness, from their fluctuations. The generality of this technique combined with inherent spatio-temporal efficiency permits extraction of interface properties in wide range of material systems. As validation, I will present results on homophase interfaces, or grain boundaries in pure aluminum. The misorientation and temperature dependence properties indicate a structural coupling between these properties that sets the overall anisotropy of the grain boundary properties. Extension of the techniques to include the effect of impurities provides for the first time a direct measure of the impurity drag effect. Ongoing theoretical analyses will be presented, which require extension of classical Brownian motion of particles to that in a binary medium. Implications for microstructural evolution during annealing phenomena will be discussed. BIO: Dr. Moneesh Upmanyu was born in Bombay, India, and received his B. Tech. degree in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in 1995, and Ph.D. degree in Material Science & Engineering with a minor focus in Computational Materials Science from the University of Michigan in 2001. He was also a visiting Graduate Student and then a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department and (then) Princeton Materials Institute at Princeton University. Following that, he spent a year as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Computational Materials Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory before accepting a position as an Assistant Professor in the Engineering Division and the Materials Science Program at Colorado School of Mines in Fall 2002. He heads the Group for Simulation and Theory of Atomic-scale Material Phenomena (stamp) and is now also affiliated with the Bioengineering and Life Sciences Program within the Engineering Division. Dr. Upmanyu¹s research is aimed at exploring atomic-scale phenomena using computational techniques and theoretical frameworks in several classes of material systems, both in nature and technology. His interests range from interfacial phenomena in polycrystalline microstructures, structure-morphology-property relations in thin films and wires, and atomistics, mechanics & self-assembly of semi-flexible filamentous aggregates as well as their networks in biology and technology. Targeted material systems include grain boundary microstructures in crystalline materials, metallic and semiconducting thin films, inorganic nanowires, nanotubes and their assemblies, and soft filamentous assemblies such as DNA, twisted protein aggregates, and their networks. His group¹s principal expertise is in computational techniques such as molecular dynamics and Monte-Carlo based methods and their links with continuum methods such as phase field and finite-element methods as well as meso-/continuum theoretical frameworks. Dr. Upmanyu is the recipient of several awards including the Graduate Student Medal (Materials Research Society) and the Outstanding Young Scientist Award (Recrystallization & Grain Growth Congress). Solvent Glove Policy

This email is intended to confirm that the new solvent glove policy discussed at Monday & Tuesday's BNC All User Meeting does not take effect until Monday. (Note: There are no Ansell latex gloves currently in the cleanroom.) ****On Monday, March 26th, the expanded cleanroom hours and policies discussed at the All User Meeting **will go into effect.*** *The exception to this rule is the CORAL system which begins April 2nd.* * Until then all existing solvent hood hazard rules apply (goggles, smock, and orange chemical gloves) both in the cleanroom and in the labs. Please follow proper protocol over the weekend. You are invited to attend a showcase provided by Purchasing Services on Wednesday, April 4 from 1:00-3:00 in MRGN 121 that will demonstrate certain aspects of the OnePurdue purchasing system - SRM. Purchasing and business office staff will be available to answer questions about the topics that are being addressed in the showcase including: * Basics of how to create a Shopping Cart * How to change a shipping address * How to use a vendor list * How to use Eplus Catalogs * How to create a special request * How to fill in accounting information * How to receive goods * Discussing common problems from the Help Desk This session is for non-business office staff who are responsible for ordering and receiving goods. This session is being offered for the benefit of staff in Discovery Park. It is not necessary to have completed the WebCT courses on SRM to attend this session.
