Special Joint Condensed Matter Physics and BIRCK Nanotechnology Center Seminar Friday, March 30, 2012 Refreshments 3:15 PM/Seminar 3:30 PM 4:30pm - 5:00pm faculty interaction reception BRK Atrium BRK, ROOM 1001 Chih-Kang Shih Jane & Roland Blumberg Professor of Physics Department of Physics University of Texas, Austin Ultra-thin epitaxial metallic films on semiconductors - A playground for exploration of novel quantum phenomena at nanoscale When an electronic system is confined in one or more dimensions to a length scale comparable to the de Broglie length, quantum confinement occurs. Such confinements have played central role in artificially engineered electronic systems such as quantum wells, wires, dots and related structures. For semiconductors, quantum confinements occur at a length scale somewhere around 100 nm. For metals, however, they occur at a length scale about one to two orders of magnitude smaller (1-5 nm). Investigations of quantum size effects in ultra-thin metallic films have recently gained tremendous amount of interests. These renewed interests are largely driven by the advancement in atomic scale control in epitaxial growth of metallic thin films, thus making it possible to access this strongly confined regime. In this presentation, we describe several interesting phenomena resulting from the confinement of electronic waves in metallic nanostructures. These include: (a) quantum size effect on nanostructure formation, (b) quantum size effect on workfunction of nanostructures, (c) quantum size on effect on superconductivity. To Research Machining Services' (CMS's) Customers & Friends, WE MADE IT -- well almost!! We would like to invite one and all to the Open House of our new Shop facility at the ADM Agricultural Innovation Center, 694 South Russell St. on April 6th, 2012. Research Machining Services (formerly the Central Machine Shop) will be open for guests from 10:00am to 3:00pm, with a presentation to take place at approximately 1:00pm. Refreshments with be available along with guests being able to walk through the new Shop and ask questions of the Staff. We plan on having CNC lathe and CNC mill demonstrations going on, and information about the Shop's capabilities. Material information sheets will also be available. Attached are flyers of both the Open House and a Map to the Shop. Please pass them along to anyone that might be interested. Dr. Yoshi Yamada Seminar March 26 @ 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM - BRK 1001 Title: Non-contact temperature measurement for semiconductor device fabrication and evaluation Abstract: Optical methods of temperature measurement such as radiation thermometry and thermoreflectance are essential tools for thermal measurement in semiconductor device fabrication and evaluation due to such features as fast response and high special resolution. In this presentation, practical implementations of these techniques in industrial scenes are presented. The first is a silicon wafer surface temperature monitoring system by thermoreflectance during plasma etching. To overcome such difficulties as low sensitivity and limitation in installation space and position for in-situ measurements, differential thermoreflectance utilizing two orthogonal polarizations was introduced. The second is radiation thermometry of silicon wafer surface temperature during flash lamp annealing (FLA). A novel approach for emissivity compensated radiation thermometry was applied to sub-millisecond response measurement. Results of thermal profile measurements conducted on a FLA chamber are described. An extension of this emissivity compensation technique to infrared thermal imagers is presented, intended for monitoring of local heat generation in highly-integrated or high-power semiconductor devices. Short biography: Prime Senior Researcher at the National Metrology Institute of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (NMIJ, AIST). Received BS and MS degrees from the University of Tokyo in 1983 and 1985, respectively, in Instrumentation Physics, and MS degree from Caltech in 1992 in Electrical Engineering. Spent 13 years in NKK, working on in-situ optical measurement in steel production, prior to joining NMIJ, AIST. Current research activities include high-temperature standards, industrial non-contact temperature measurements, and calibration of earth observing space-borne hyperspectral sensors.
