We have recently been made aware of a process concerning University vehicles and parking reimbursements. *Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 1:30PM, BRK 2001*: "The Art of Taming Light at the Nanoscale," Alex Kildishev, Purdue University. *NOTE*: /Dr. Kildishev is a prospective ECE Research Associate Professor candidate./ *Abstract*: This talk will review some of my recent studies, which are focused on the following topics: 1. optical metamaterials and plasmonic nanoantennas for imaging and sensing systems ? developing fast meshless solvers for modeling periodic metamaterials and metasurfaces; ? pulse shaping with metamaterials/metasurfaces; ? bi-anisotropic homogenization of optical metamaterials; 2. transformation optics concepts and applications: ? designing non-imaging gradient-index optics; ? designing and validating planar nanoplasmonic elements of diffractive optics; 3. time-domain multiphysics modeling of the periodic and random nanostructures: ? accurate modeling of dispersive plasmonic materials; ? experiment-fit modeling of stimulated emission in organic dyes. Evacuation Recap - 4-18-12

On Wednesday, 18 April 2012, the BNC was evacuated for a Toxic Gas Monitoring System (TGMS) alarm. The cause of the alarm was determined and the building was cleared for resumption of activities approximately thirty minutes later. Please note that a problem was observed during the evacuation. Most of the cleanroom personnel who were evacuating the facility went through the gowning room, causing a significant bottleneck in that area and delaying the exit of many people. Please note that during an evacuation the nearest emergency exit should be used - not the gowning area. Following this procedure, as explained in your building training class, will decrease the amount of time it takes to evacuate the facility. Please use this note as a reminder to USE THE NEAREST EMERGENCY EXIT WHEN EVACUATING the cleanroom and the facility. This evacuation was caused by a flaw in the TGMS. When the batteries on the wireless sensors near depletion - but are not fully depleted - the sensors can send spurious signals that trigger an alarm. A very low percentage of sensors have exhibited this behavior, but it has happed on about several occasions. This issue was not discovered previously because the system is just now reaching an age where the batteries are nearing depletion. Two corrective actions are currently underway. First, all batteries in the sensors - about sixty sensors - are being replaced. While we are not currently at the expected life of the batteries, we are close enough that this has been determined to be a prudent approach to the issue. Not all batteries age at the same rate, so we are taking the conservative approach and changing all the batteries. Second, we are working with the company that supplies the sensors to implement a software change that will make this type of spurious signal a warning rather than a danger alarm. This means that such an occurrence will page the appropriate people but not evacuate the building. This will NOT diminish the response to real alarms, such as the electrochemical sensors that are also part of the wireless system. It will, however, eliminate this source of false-alarm evacuations. Composite, Energy and Environmental Applications of Carbon Nanomaterials Seunghyun Baik sbaik(a)me.skku.ac.kr Department of Energy Science and School of Mechanical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University, Suwon, Korea Carbon nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene have received considerable attention due to their unique electrical and mechanical properties. This talk provides an overview of our lab's recent research activities in conductive composite, energy and environmental applications of carbon nanomaterials. Firstly, carbon nanotube-incorporated conductive composites have been of interest for decades. However, the poor contact interface hindered a dramatic increase in electrical conductivity for polymer matrix composites. Here we present highly conductive silver/epoxy pastes [1], metallic inks [2] and stretchable conductive films [3] by using micron-sized silver (Ag) flakes and a small amount of nanotubes functionalized with Ag nanoparticles. The one-dimensional, flexible and conductive nanotubes constructed effective electrical networks among the micron-sized Ag flakes, and the contact interface was improved by the Ag nanoparticles self-assembled on the sidewall of nanotubes. This strategy provided extraordinary high conductivities for epoxy-based pastes and stretchable conductive films. Secondly, the highly anisotropic thermal property of carbon nanotubes was utilized to control surfacial thermochemical reaction [4] and generate thermopower waves [5]. Finally, membrane filters based on vertically-aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity were investigated to separate oil, water and other molecules [6].
