We actually had an ion implanter at one time, and it sat near where the Jipelec RTA is now. Ion implanters are very expensive to install and maintain, and it was decided a number of years ago that it would not be cost effective for us to keep it running. Birck is not a big CMOS facility so the occasional doping requirements are handled by outside services. It will probably remain this way for the foreseeable future. Personal Photoresist Bottles Please do not use others' photoresist bottles. We supply small bottles to keep quantities of personal photoresists in with the proper labeling. It has been brought to our attention that some users are using others' bottles, either pouring out their photoresists or putting additional photoresists into them. Please read the labels on all photoresist bottles, and if they belong to a Birck user please don't use them or add resist to them. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ron

Update on last Thursday's evacuation

Dear all Last Thursday we had an alarm and the building was evacuated around 7pm. The alarm was caused by a small ammonia leak in a valve manifold box on the YES oven in the photolithography area. This was corrected and taken off-line because this process is not used anymore. Unfortunately the Burton Morgan center was locked at the time the alarm went off and despite a year-old request by the BNC to the Purdue police to have that building unlocked in such a scenario, the Burton Morgan center remained locked that evening. The cold weather led several people to go to the Bindley center. While many BNC staff responded to the emergency situation and I would like to personally thank them for that, communication was not effective to the people waiting in Bindley. This caused confusion, lots of wasted time, and frustration to everyone. I would like to apologize for that inconvenience and wanted to assure everyone that we took immediate action to improve our plans. Specifically, here are the steps we are taking to avoid such an issue in the future: 1. In event of a building evacuation alarm during normal business hours, please go to the Emergency Assembly Area as you currently do. A BNC staff member will meet you in that area and provide updates to the emergency situation. If you do not know the cause of the alarm, do not need help (e.g., not injured), and don't think that you can be of assistance in the emergency, you may remain there or feel free to leave the area. 2. In the event of a building evacuation during off hours, you may either go to the Purdue Police Department (please see map below) or, if you do not know the cause of the alarm, do not need help (e.g., not injured), and don't think that you can be of assistance in the emergency, please feel free to leave the area and not go to the Emergency Assembly Area. Again, a BNC staff member will go to the EAA as soon as practical. 3. Two additional staff members who live nearby have been added to the emergency responders, with the sole purpose of assisting in the Emergency Assembly Area. We are particularly thankful to Donna Brown and Jaime Turner for volunteering for this role. They are in the process of receiving the appropriate training. 4. The BNC Building Emergency Plan (BEP) is being updated with the information above. Thank you for all input you provided to help us improve our protocols. Important Message: Building Steam is Back to Normal

All BNC Users - Campus utility department indicated that campus steam pressure is back to normal. All building chemical exhaust systems and ambient controls are normal. Some research equipment is still shut down or is in the process of being started back up. Please check Coral for individual equipment status. Defense Seminar Survey Feedback Workshop Cleanroom Blue Chemical Storage Cabinets The blue storage cabinets now have certain areas for storing different classes and types of chemicals. There are trays within the cabinets that are labeled for the chemicals that are to be stored in that location. This new procedure allows us to segregate chemicals and keep incompatible chemicals away from each other, so when you’re returning chemicals to the cabinet please put them in the proper tray. Davis Materials Research Engineer National Institute of Standards and Technology Gaithersburg, Maryland “Understanding Polymer Interfaces: Unique Measurement Strategies” Friday, November 21, 2014 ARMS 1109 Refreshments – 9:15 am / Seminar – 9:30 am Survey Feedback Spinner Maintenance We received input that the smaller chucks aren’t sealing as well as they usually do. It was found that PMMA was used on the smallest chuck and it took a greater effort to clean out the material. We’re implementing a preventive maintenance check as well as ordering new parts for the chucks. MJB3 Aligners A great suggestion was made to shift the aligners to the right on their air-tables to allow better seated ergonomics. This was done on Friday, Nov 7. Big Screen in Upper Atrium We’re working with the card-reader company to modify the software to dynamically show which users are currently in the cleanroom on the big screen HDTV. Additionally we will discuss with them the possibility of providing a signal (audible and/or visual) when the second-to-last person swipes out of the cleanroom in the afterhours. This would enhance the buddy policy for working in acid hoods during nights and weekends. BNC Student/User Forum A user suggested we create a forum for users to share ideas, recipes, findings, discoveries, etc about their processes and experiences in the cleanroom. We’ve contacted ECN and will set up such a forum in the near future. Thanks for your inputs, keep ‘em coming! Plasmonic waveguides cladded by hyperbolic metamaterials Strongly anisotropic media with hyperbolic dispersion can be used for claddings of plasmonic waveguides. In order to analyze the fundamental properties of such waveguides, we analytically study 1D and 2D waveguides arranged of a hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) in a HMM-Insulator-HMM (HIH) structure. We show that hyperbolic metamaterial claddings give flexibility in designing the properties of HIH waveguides. Our comparative study on plasmonic waveguides reveals that HIH-type waveguides can have a higher performance than MIM or IMI waveguides.
