However we believe the system has been hacked from the outside, and the Vistec field service people are working on the control software via a remote connection to find and fix the software issues. We hope to have this resolved in a very short time. Also, some users have noted that it is difficult to get time on the machine due to it always being reserved by a small number of users. We're revisiting our entire recharge scenario and this issue will be discussed. Recently a very large project involving multiple groups across campus has required a large amount of VB-6 write time. The latest chips were written two days ago and it is anticipated that the VB-6 requirements for this particular project will be relaxed for a while, allowing other users on the machine. Cleanroom Boot Covers and Gloves Event Seminar Windows Workshop XPS Cleanroom Boot Covers and Gloves Some users have noted that the cleanroom boot covers sometimes have difficulty staying up through the course of walking around in the cleanroom. The engineering staff has experienced this as well. There is a little trick that sometimes works to help the tops stay up. There is a series of snaps on the outside, and one mating-snap on the inside. The mating snap can be used to semi-tighten the top of the boot, and then the elastic band can be snapped to fully tighten the top. Many times the right combination of inside snap and elastic band snap can be found that makes the boot tight enough to stay up under normal walking conditions. Also, some users have pointed out that the gloves are short and sometimes wrists can become exposed. We will explore what glove options are available that may help this issue. Event There will be a Biomedical Engineering event held in the atrium on Wednesday, February 18th. Please do not disturb the posters, table set up or help yourself to the catering. XPS The XPS system has experienced a variety of maintenance issues recently and so has been available for analysis only sporadically. Most of the problems have been found and fixed. Please see Dmitry for analysis. Also, there is a process by which students can get trained to use the XPS system themselves, but this can take several months or more to develop the skill and expertise to get meaningful results. Please discuss your analysis needs with Dmitry and depending on frequency and duration of use, he will be able to advise if training is the best route for XPS analysis. Note too that the system has just acquired UPS (Ultraviolet Photoeemission Spectroscopy) capability, so please see Dmitry for details.

Birck Nanotechnology Website Cleanroom Workshop Smoking Tote Reminder VB-6 Birck Nanotechnology Website A couple of errors have been discovered on the Birck website, and we're in the process of getting those corrected. If you see additional problems or erroneous information please let us know so that we may correct the information. The Birck website is our 'marketing tool' to internal and external users and potential users so we need to make sure the information is accurate. Cleanroom Workshop Cleanrooms: Using Cleanrooms to Control Particle Contamination Presented by John R. This helps us keep the cleanroom bays neat and orderly, and eliminates crowding and trip hazards. VB-6 The VB-6 display issues have been solved thanks to Albany College of New York. They sent us an entire 'electronics crate' from their VB-6 to replace the one in our system. This solved the video issue, and while the field service engineer was here this week we also upgraded the computer and software.

Dear students, Do you know 2015 is the International Year of Light ? Would you like to learn about the OSA and SPIE Purdue Student Chapter ? We are a joint chapter of OSA (Optical Society of America) and SPIE(The International Society of Optics and Photonics) with 40+ student members. Our aim is to serve all Purdue students who are interested in or working in the optical community, and promote the educational awareness of optical science to the general public. Here you can learn the latest progress of innovative optical/photonic technology. We also have tremendous exciting events and professional activities throughout the year. Please come to our 2015 Spring Callout next Thursday (02/05) at 5pm in MSEE 239. We also have Prof. Peter Bermel present an interesting lecture on "Solving the mysteries of surprising optical phenomena found in nature”. Below is more information about Prof. Bermel’s talk. ****************************************************************************************** Title: Solving the mysteries of surprising optical phenomena found in nature Abstract: A broad range of optical phenomena in nature have created long-standing mysteries. For example, what gives butterflies and birds their rich colors? And how can sightings of some unusual natural phenomena like mirages or ball lightning be explained? The process of solving these mysteries has interacted synergistically with the modern fields of photonics, plasmonics, and metamaterials. A few exciting applications of this work will also be briefly discussed. Brief Bio: Dr. Peter BERMEL is an assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECE>. His research focuses on improving the performance of photovoltaic, thermophotovoltaic, and nonlinear systems using the principles of nanophotonics. Key enabling techniques for his work include electromagnetic and electronic theory, modeling, simulation, fabrication, and characterization. Dr. Bermel is widely-published in both scientific peer-reviewed journals<http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=4Z-aRA0AAAAJ&hl=en> and publications geared towards the general public<http://web.ics.purdue.edu/%7Epbermel/publicity.html>. VB-6 Available for Use

Dear all Birck Users: The VB-6 is now available for use. John Reilley, the Vistec field service engineer, successfully installed the new electronics crate that arrived today and this solved the video problem. A computer upgrade is to be done next Tuesday or Wednesday, and so the system will need to be off-line at that time, but it is now available for use. Ron
