Nanodays 2017 - A big thank you to everyone who contributed to another successful event!

Dear all, NanoDays 2017 (https://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/birck/events/Special%20Events/NanoDays…) last month was a great opportunity for all of us to help impact a lot of lives. Over 250 individuals and groups worked hard to make this event a big success! I would like to express our big thank you to everyone for selflessly contributing to this important event! As I am sure you have personally experienced, it makes a big difference for many kids and their families. A special thank you goes to Ron Reger & Jaime Turner who chaired and led the event, and the Nanodays Committee members: Sarah Anderson, Neil Dilley, Aveek Dutta, Nicole Finley, Maria Longoria-Littleton, Tim Miller, Joon Park, Sean Rinehart, Kenny Schwartz, Paul Sturm, and Justin Wirth. This year we had over 1000 participants in NanoDays. It includes over 250 volunteers, Girls scouts, K-12 grade students, home schools, teachers, parents and general audiences on all three days, April 5, 6, & 7, 2017. BNC E-news for the week of May 1st

Spring PM Shutdown - May 1, 2017 - May 5, 2017 The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown May 1 through May 5, 2017. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, May 1 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 5. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, May 1 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 5. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 5. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability. For long-term research planning, please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns. This Thursday (April 27th), we will have a Purdue Quantum Center theory seminar in Birck Nanotechnology Center at 11:00 am in Room 2001. The speaker is Prof. Francesco Ciccarello. Title: What is Markovian and non-Markovian in Quantum Mechanics: new approaches and viewpoints Title: What is Markovian and non-Markovian in Quantum Mechanics: new approaches and viewpoints Abstract While in classical physics the notion of what is Markovian or not is well defined, this is not the case when it comes to open quantum systems. What makes a quantum dynamics Markovian or non-Markovian (NM)? Traditional answers to this question involve the celebrated Lindblad master equation (ME) and/or the ability of an open dynamics to be governed by a time-local ME. The last few years, yet, witnessed a thorough revision of such concepts with the aim to establish in a rigorous way exact criteria for assessing whether or not a dynamics is NM and even quantifying its degree of quantum “non-Markovianity”. This resulted in a number of “non-Markovianity measures” that have been put forward. Based on these and a number of theoretical advancements, the lack of a Lindblad ME or time-local ME turns out not to be a reliable criterion. For instance, there are Markovian dynamics that are not described by a Lindblad ME, while, on the other hand, many open dynamics that are strongly NM can be shown to effectively obey a time-local ME. After reviewing these new concepts, in the last part of the talk I discuss a problem where they are used to tackle the question as to whether or not the dynamics of a qubit undergoing single-photon scattering in a waveguide is Markovian. It turns out that, in the infinite-waveguide case, the dynamics is NM when the photon-wavepacket width is comparable with the qubit-field coupling rate. In the semi-infinite waveguide case (mirror-like boundary condition), this source of non-Markovianity adds to that due to the photon delay time (owing to the finite qubit-mirror distance). Bio Francesco Ciccarello is an Italian Assistant Professor (“Ricercatore”) at University of Palermo, Italy and member of NEST, Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy. He is currently a Fulbright Research Scholar at Duke University, Duhram, NC, in the Harold Baranger group. He works within the broad area of quantum information, his present research interests being focused on open quantum systems theory, waveguide QED and cavity QED. In recent years, he in particular made contributions to quantum collision models, quantum correlations beyond entanglement and scattering-based implementations of quantum information processing tasks.
