Abstract: Over a hundred years ago, the pioneers of aviation took flight in no small part due to material innovations ranging from novel casting of aluminum engine blocks to judicious selection of natural materials. Unquestionably, the future of aerospace will look as different from today as the Wright Flyer and Curtiss June Bug differ from UAVs and F35s. However, the role of materials will remain unchanged - they will be the crucial ingredient that enables these future machines to push the performance envelope. Using examples from within the Air Force Research Laboratory, the tools necessary to hasten the development of these vital materials will be discussed. These range from embracing technologies of the digital revolution to accelerate materials development, reduce qualification cost, and provide agile manufacturing methods, to harvesting the potential at the intersection of nano-based metamaterials, smart surfaces, nanostructured devices, and biotechnology to enable autonomous systems that can execute complex tasks in evolving environments. An example of in-house research will be highlighted, which focuses on establishing large-scale production capacity of Nobel Metal and Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Nano-Particles through a fundamental understanding the growth and exfoliation mechanisms. This underlying insight enables the development of continuous fabrication methods that simultaneously increase production concentration, while reducing structural dispersity, impurities, and reagent waste. She received her Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT in 2012. Her doctoral thesis was on understanding heterogeneous nucleation of pharmaceuticals by designing polymeric substrates. In her subsequent postdoctoral training with Prof. Zhenan Bao at Stanford University, she pursued research in the thriving field of printed electronics. Diao group, started in January 2015 at Illinois, focuses on bioinspired assembly of organic functional materials and printing approaches that enable structural control down to the molecular and nanoscale. Her work has been frequently featured in scientific journals and news media such as the Science Magazine and Nature Materials. She is named to the MIT Technology Review's annual list of Innovators Under 35 as a pioneer in nanotechnology and materials. She is also a recipient of NSF CAREER Award, 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award and was selected as a Sloan Research Fellow in Chemistry as one of the "very best scientific minds working today". Abstract: Directed assembly, crystallization and microphase separation have played a central role in the development of modern electronics and energy materials. Recent years, printed electronics based on semiconducting molecular systems have emerged as a new technology platform that promise to revolutionize the electronics, clean energy and medical industry. In contrast to traditional electronic manufacturing that requires high temperature and high vacuum, these new electronic materials can be solution printed at near ambient conditions to produce flexible, light-weight, biointegrated forms at low-cost and high-throughput. However, it remains a central challenge to control the morphology of semiconducting molecular systems across length scales. The significance of this challenge lies in the order of magnitude modulations in device performance by morphology parameters across all length scales. This challenge arises from the fact that directed assembly approaches designed for conventional hard materials are far less effective for soft matters that exhibit high conformational complexity and weak, non-specific intermolecular interactions. On the other hand, biological systems have evolved to assemble complex molecular structures highly efficiently. We are eager to transfer the wisdom of living systems to developing printed electronics technologies as to enable next generation electronics for clean energy and healthcare. In this talk, we present new insights and strategies we recently developed for controlling multi-scale assembly and transformation of semiconducting molecules. We learned from living systems and designed bioinspired assembly processes, allowing molecules to put themselves together cooperatively into highly ordered structures otherwise not possible with significantly improved electronic properties. We discovered molecular design rules that impart dynamic and switchable electronic properties through the mechanism of molecular cooperativity - a mechanism ubiquitous in nature. We repurpose bioactive molecules, such as DNA binding agents as H-bonded organic semiconductors. The new solid-state properties enabled by our approach could potentially bring out new stretching, sensing and actuation mechanisms not possible before. We further developed 2D and 3D printing process to realize on-the-fly morphology control down to the molecular and nanoscale. [cid:image003.png@01D5AEA5.666639B0] 2019 - 2020 Holiday Shutdown Notice Dear Birck Users and Research Community, With the extended break this year between the Christmas and New Year's holidays the university will be closed for 12 days in a row, beginning Friday, at 3:30PM December 20th and concluding Thursday morning, January 2nd. Please note the time and complete any processes requiring hazardous gases before 3:30 pm Friday. This represents a challenge for us to maintain some limited research capability while the university is officially closed with no staff members present. Therefore the Birck Nanotechnology Center will implement the following policy for the duration of this time period: 1. No toxic, flammable, or hazardous gases will be available. This includes hydrogen, methane, silane, dichlorosilane, ammonia, H2S, ALD sources, BCl3, nitric oxide, chlorine, & KrF. These gases will be shut off at the source and no processes using these gases will be allowed. 2. Nitrogen, argon, helium, forming gas, SF6, CF4, C4F8, and oxygen will continue to be available. 3. Cleanroom and laboratory operations will still be available as long as they don't use any hazardous gases. 4. Fume hoods will be open for use but please make sure someone else is in the same lab area or cleanroom bay if you're going to work alone in the hood. No HF, BOE, or TMAH work is to be performed during this time. The RCA Hood will be unavailable for use. 5. Loading dock will be closed with no shipping and receiving coverage and no deliveries accepted. 6. There will be no custodial service during holiday time so trash and bathroom conditions will not be maintained. 7. Stocked materials should be especially conserved by all users as no deliveries to the university will occur during this period, and stocking of on-hand materials may occur on a very limited basis. 8. Cleanroom users should continue to re-use their cleanroom gowns and other garments as much as possible since the shipping of used garments to our laundering supplier will be unavailable during this time. 9. Staff will not be working normal hours but some may intermittently stop in for brief walk-throughs and checks. Thank you for your support of this extended period of time for staff, faculty, and students to enjoy time off with family and to refresh. Birck Nanotechnology Center Leadership RA Position The Spintronics Lab (BRK 1157) needs a 1/4 - time RA (10 hrs/wk) to help Neil Dilley, the research scientist in charge of the lab. The position offers the student thorough training on two widely-used cryogenic measurement systems, the Quantum Design MPMS-3 SQUID and PPMS DynaCool : * Measurement capabilities: DC and AC magnetic properties, magneto-transport, thermal transport and magnetic dynamics over a wide range of temperatures and applied magnetic fields * Samples investigated: bulk materials, thin films, or devices After becoming familiar with the instruments, the student will assist with various research activities, including: * Training new users; helping them with initial measurements; troubleshooting measurement artifacts * Helping Neil keep the instruments and lab tools organized and working smoothly * Testing new capabilities of systems and contributing to technical notes about the results. In fact they've always been all around us but we haven't noticed. Despite their prevalence in science and engineering fields, they are not well understood-in large part because the fluid mechanics intuition developed in the study of macroscale flows frequently does not apply to microscopic flows. This class will prepare engineers and scientists to address problems they will encounter when studying the behavior of fluid flows in microscopic domains. The course will concentrate on behaviors not typically important at large length scales that become very important at small length scales, such as Van der Waals forces, surface tension, and electrostatic forces. The course will take a largely analytical approach to studying these flow phenomena although some computational modeling will also performed and several lab demos and visits are planned. Previous experience with graduate level fluid mechanics (i.e. Navier-Stokes solutions) or continuum mechanics will be helpful. Some computational analysis of model problems may be performed using commercial software (ANSYS/Fluent/COMSOL or related). To learn how fluids behave in microscopic domains that are still large enough for continuum flow approximations to hold. 2. To learn where the continuum assumptions are no longer valid. 3. To learn how to treat sub-continuum fluid flows. Prerequisites by Topic: The student should be of graduate standing. The student should have had some previous experience with graduate level fluid mechanics, in particular solving the Navier-Stokes equations. Computer Usage: The students may need to use ANSYS, Matlab, Fluent, COMSOL or a comparable package, to perform some of the computations necessary for the course. Assessment Methods: Grades will be based on homework assignments, two projects, and a final exam. The relative weight of these components is 25%, 50%, and 25%, respectively. Jischke Drive Repairs - April - August, 2020 Project Overview South Martin Jischke Drive from State Street to Harrison Street will be repaired next year, and utility work in the area will also occur. This section of South Martin Jischke Drive will be closed in phases while work is ongoing, and some adjacent sidewalk and ramps will be unavailable. We will be constructing a pedestrian "bump out" on the east and west side where the cross walks are located. The bump out will improve pedestrian safety. We will also be adding a short section of bike lane that will connect the existing bike lane that dead ends at the south end of Burton Morgan Dr. with bike lane at the corner of State and Jischke. Project Schedule While we are still in the design phase and the schedule is not yet final, we anticipate sidewalk repairs and utility work will begin in April 2020 with road closures beginning in May. Road work will be completed in two phases after spring commencement and before Boiler Gold Rush in August. The first phase will close northern half of the road from State Street to just south of the TERY parking lot entrance. This section will be reopened after repairs are complete, and then the remaining portion of South Jischke Drive from south of the TERY parking lot to Harrison Street will close for repairs. Access to TERY will be maintained throughout the project. Parking along Jischke will not be available during construction. Our Request for Your Participation To streamline feedback, occupants should communicate needs and concerns for April-August 2020 with their assigned building deputy.
