Brick Nanotechnology Center PM Closure Notice = October 18-October 22, 2021 The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 18 through October 22, 2021. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 18 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 22. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, biological safety cabinets, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, October 18 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 22. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical or biological work will be allowed during this period. It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 22. Thomas Beechem Associate Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering September 16th, 2021 | 12:00pm Join Zoom: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/98695180597 Title: Fusing Light with Heat Thermal Physics for Nanophotonics & Vice Versa [Thomas Beechem]Abstract: Light exhibits a wave nature. Phonons do too. Within the infrared portion of the spectrum, these differing "waves" can interact to form hybrid energy carriers called polaritons. Polaritons, in turn, provide fundamental advantages for optical functionality and thermal transport. Here, means of capitalizing upon these advantages will be explored. First, the necessity of creating alternative heat transport channels will be asserted by describing: (1) the generality of size induced reductions in thermal conductivity and (2) the inherently insulative nature of material boundaries on transport. Polaritons-and our ability to engineer them-will then be shown amenable to meeting these challenges. Specifically, polariton dispersion engineering will be demonstrated via an examination of actively tunable infrared metasurfaces leveraging voltage-induced changes in the optical properties of graphene and lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Building from the ability to tailor dispersion, future directions will be described highlighting means of implementing polaritons to enhance not only nanoscale thermal transport but also infrared sensing and spectroscopy. Bio: Thomas Beechem joined the faculty of Purdue University's Mechanical Engineering Department in August of 2021. Beforehand, he was a scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM for 12 years where he held an affiliate appointment with the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT). Thomas now leads the Specere Laboratory at Purdue, which focuses on leveraging nanoscale phonon-physics to create thermal, spectroscopic (i.e., sensing), and infrared solutions. He has authored more than 85 archival publications, holds 5 patents, and had his work selected as the featured "cover article" on 5 separate occasions by 6 different periodicals. He received a 2015 Defense Program Award of Excellence and was named one of Sandia's "Up and Coming Innovators" in 2016. In 2017, he was named an associate editor for the Journal of Heat Transfer, a role that he remains in today. SiC is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a high critical field, making it an exciting material for power electronic devices. SiC MOSFETs are now commercially available, but do not yet achieve their full potential. Our group is approaching this problem from several directions, including a new device trench MOSFET geometries inspired by modern FinFETs and alternative gate insulator fabrication methods. Research activities will include fabrication and characterization of SiC MOS capacitors and MOSFETs with gate oxides formed by thermal oxidation, atomic layer deposition (ALD), and other methods. The student will gain a detailed understanding of the physics of the MOS interface and will learn various methods of characterizing devices, including MOS CV analysis, interface state density and carrier mobility. Provide FIB services - TEM sample preparation, patterning, cross section imaging and EDX chemical analysis - to BNC and industrial users using the FIB Helios 4G UX 2. Manage the reception of samples and analysis instructions from Birck users 3. Training new users in the FIB Helios 4G 4. Align the FIB monthly and make sure the system is working properly. 5. Provide assistance to users remotely in case an issue arises. 6. Manage the training and services request for FIB in Ilab and provide metrics every week. 7. Training new users in the Nanomill ion polisher, PIPS, and mechanical polisher. 8. Have great disposition, excellent communication skills, and ability to solve problems when providing services or trainings 9. Provide maintenance and support to the EM instrumentation 10. Prepare material for promoting the EM core in social media. Because of the nature of our Industrial clients, the successful candidate needs to have export control clearance. Also, hours could be negotiable but the successful candidate needs to be available from Tuesday until Saturday to work at BNC. Jaime’s transition to Biochemistry

Dear Birck Research Community – It is with mixed emotions that I bring you the news that Jaime Turner, our Administrative Assistant to the Birck Director for the past 10 years, has accepted another position as the Assistant to the Department Head of the Purdue Biochemistry Department. Jaime has contributed significantly to Birck’s operations and outreach. She has played an key role in new faculty recruitment, NanoDays, Grandparents University, office assignments & management, administrative leadership, and many other tasks and assignments too numerous to mention. Her positive outlook and welcoming approach made new Birck users, faculty, and staff feel immediately welcome and part of the Birck family. We will greatly miss her, and we wish her the very best in her new position in Biochemistry! Her last day with us at Birck is Friday, September 10th, so please take the opportunity to congratulate her on her new position and thank her for her great service to Birck for the last 10 years. We are now more than a decade after it started. Topological photonics has already proved itself as an excellent platform for experimenting with concepts imported from condensed matter physics. But more importantly, topological photonics has also triggered new fundamental ideas of its own and has offered exciting applications that could become real technologies in the near future. The concepts of topological photonics will be presented, along with its most important aspect: topological insulator lasers. Do not use the fountains to dispose of any other liquids. We are having a problem with the drains being clogged up with tea leaves and coffee residue.
