Dear Birck Nanotechnology Center Researcher- The Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (NSAC) is hosting a Birck Nanotechnology Center Seminar Series. When: Thursdays at 10:30 am (beginning Thursday, January 11th) Where: Birck 1001 Format: Each seminar will last an hour with ~ 40-45 minutes for the presentation and the remainder for questions. We hope to have an even mixture of professors and graduate students presenting their research. Guidelines for the presentations are as follow: Professors (see memo of 11/27/06): * Overview of your research at a level geared towards recruiting new grad students or reporting to a funding agency * Presentations will be videotaped and posted to the BNC website in Breeze format Graduate students: * Feel free to present on your research or on a "journal club" article * These seminars are a great opportunity to practice your prelim or thesis defense before presenting to your committee * If you are giving a talk at an upcoming conference, practice here first. If your talk is short (15-20 minutes), pair up with another grad and you both can present one Thursday. Holiday Schedule 2006

Attached is the holiday schedule for December, 2006. There are a couple of things to keep in mind in addition to the schedule. First, staff coverage of equipment will be limited to the week days that are not Purdue holidays. Please contact staff only for safety emergencies during the Purdue holidays. Due to vacation time taken between Christmas and New Years Day, some staff members may not be available during this holiday period. We will provide equipment coverage to the best of our abilities with the staff members who are present. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Second, many Purdue services are either unavailable or on minimum crews during the holiday period. Shipments and mail delivery will not be available on December 27, 28, and 29. Keys will also not be issued during that time unless there is an emergency - in that event, please contact Mark Voorhis, Building Manager. It is Purdue policy that employees cannot be required to work during Purdue holidays. We are attempting to find employees who will volunteer to work as lab buddies during the holidays, but if we are not able to find people the cleanroom will be closed and no chemical process will be allowed in the laboratories on the days marked in blue on the attached calendar. Please check posting at the cleanroom entrance and Sheryl's desk for updates. Thank you for your understanding during this holiday and vacation period. East Lab Wing HVAC Repair for 12-19-06

BNC All On 12-19-06 at 12:15 P.M. we will slow down the make up air to the east lab wing for about ~30 - 45 minutes to replace a failed temperature sensor. This will effect the positive pressure for all east wings lab to where the door may be hard to open during the repairs. Thank you for your cooperation. These processes of discovery and conceptualization involve the development of hypotheses and theories based on observation and experimentation. In biology, revolutionary changes have most often been catalyzed by new tools and technologies that have been developed and used in the scientific method. Examples include the development of: 1) nuclear chemistry and radioisotope tracing for dissecting the major metabolic pathways in the 1940-1950s; 2) electron microscopy for imaging cytoplasm and membrane structure in the 1960-1970s; and 3) molecular biotechnology and the explosion in the study of molecular biology and genetics that emerged in the 1980s. Because of these advances, research is now moving into an era dominated by new disciplines, including bioinformatics, cytomics, genomics, ionomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, to name a few. These emerging fields are based on advancing technologies and are providing more and more information that now needs to be integrated into understanding broader relationships. Because of this, the attention of researchers is returning to integration in terms of form and function in biosystems. This neo-physiological approach will, in turn, be dependent upon the development and application of physiological sensor technologies that are multidimensional and dynamic. This revolution has already begun and includes work in biosensors, biomaterials, scanning probe microsensors, biomimetics, and lab-on-a-chip technologies (BioMEMS, and microfluidics). This symposium seeks to provide a framework for this emerging field by bringing together researchers to share ideas from across this interdisciplinary domain.
