Dear All, We hosted Nanodays last Thursday and Friday, and Girl Scout Night on Wednesday evening. This was a great opportunity to showcase the impact of nanotechnology in the society and to encourage young students to pursue carriers in science and engineering. This would not have been possible without the dedicated work of our staff who have been working with Candiss Vibbert and her office for 4 months planning the nanodays events. Paul Sturm and the Discovery Park Development Intern, Jennifer Hershberger, played a key role by contacting 90 prospect companies and obtaining food and cash contributions from 14 of them. Jaime Turner did an outstanding job in coordinating and supervising the whole event. I would like to particularly thank the following main contributors: o Lisa Reece - Nano Ice Cream, coordinator, training o NSAC (Coordinators, Manny Ochoa; Misha Shalaginov) -ran the mock cleanroom o Geoff Gardner - created activities for mock cleanroom and participated in mock cleanroom the entire time o Heather Anthrop - coordinator, participant, setup and cleanup o Nancy Black - coordinator, participant, setup and cleanup o Maria Longoria Littleton (MRGN) - coordinator, participant o Cindy Ream (MRGN) - participant o Cindy Sanders - nanodays accounts, picked up donated food o Dave Sederberg - coordinator, Spring fest leader (tent 30 on the Purdue Mall near the class of 1950), training o Gale Lockwood -nano treasure hunt Tanya Faltens (NCN) lead the preparation of volunteers and training, and prepared teacher info before the event. We also had quite a few staff who helped to set up the activities and clean up: o Ron Reger - gave tour for school, helped with set up and clean up o Steve Jurss - gave tour for school, helped with cleanup o Guy Telesnicki - supervised an activity o Donna Brown - supervised an activity and picked up donated food o Gilly Anderson - picked up donated food o Christy Daugherty - picked up donated food o Tracy Hudson - supervised an activity both on Girl Scout evening and during Nanodays o Bambrah Miller (MRGN) - participant o Joanna Allen - picked up donated food o Natosha Whisler - helped move tables for clean up o Mary Jo Totten - reserved bus lot and walkie talkies o Lorraine Fox - helped move tables for clean up I was glad to see quite a few graduate students and several faculty who supervised the activities and interacted with our young visitors. This is a great way to fulfill outreach activities for NSF or similar grants. Together with Peter Bermel and Lisa Reece, we are working to prepare material for Research Goes to School. This is an NSF program lead by Gabriela Weaver and Discovery Learning Research Center. During the next two summers, we will have a two-week training for a group of pre-service and in-service high school teachers from rural Indiana to introduce nanotechnology concepts in their classes. We hope this can be the basis of future nanotechnology K-12 and UG education grants. It will be great if other faculty could also take the lead and include nanodays in their upcoming proposals. Intern Position NSAC Coffee Hour Parking Seminar Intern Position The Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) would like to temporarily employ an intern student to work for up to 20h per week in a variety of exciting communications/publicity projects. The student will interact with the leadership team, faculty, staff, and students working in the center as well as other parts of the campus. Analytical skills to collect and interpret data from a variety of resources such as on-line publication records, proposal records from the Sponsored Programs Office, and others are required. The student should also be able to work and effectively/efficiently interact with the BNC leadership team, faculty, graduate students, and others to gather information, design, and create communication materials for web, print, social media, and video dissemination. Strong skills with Illustrator-Photoshop-like products, PowerPoint, Word, webpage software, and social media software. Excellent communication skills are a plus. The student will be employed on a per-hour/bi-weekly basis at a rate of $10/hour and the position is available immediately. A promising approach is offered by non-contact energy transfer-based hybrid nanostructures combining strongly absorbing components, such as inorganic nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs), with high-mobility semiconductor (SC) layers. In such hybrid systems, the excitonic energy is transferred via non-radiative (NRET) and radiative (RET) energy transfers across the interface with the subsequent separation and transport of charge carriers entirely within the SC-based component. We have prepared hybrid structures consisting of several monolayers (ML) of the colloidal CdSe/ZnS NQDs attached to oxide-free Si surfaces. The bottom NQD ML is directly attached to the Si surface via self-assembled layer of amine-modified carboxy-alkyl chain linkers. Using hydrosilylation, H-terminated Si surfaces are fully functionalized through Si-C bonding (no interface oxide), providing functional headgroups for NQD's attachment. The consequent, size-gradient NQD MLs are grafted via covalent linking by ethylene-diamine molecules. This approach results in the creation of tightly controlled, multilayer NQD structures with well determined distances to the Si surface, ideally suited for energy transfer studies. We have demonstrated that efficient NRET and RET take place from NQD layers into Si substrates of various geometries. NRET, which is characterized by donor/acceptor dipole-dipole interaction, is shown to be an efficient mechanism for energy coupling for proximal NQDs (ENRET~65%) in the visible portion1, while radiative coupling into waveguiding modes of Si substrates2 plays the major role in the near-infrared.3 Overall transfer efficiency of Etotal~90% for a single NQD ML on Si has been obtained. However, to harvest the majority of sunlight, multilayer NQD films of several hundred nm thickness need to be created. We further utilize ET concepts to create graded multilayer NQD films with directed energy flow towards Si substrate via the cascaded interlayer NRET. We demonstrated that for bi-layer and tri-layer NQD structures, more than 80% of excitons originating in the outermost NQD ML are eventually transferred into Si substrate.4 These results are confirmed by theoretical calculations taking into account various rates of NRET between NQD MLs and direct RET into Si substrate and are consistent with the expectation of the defect-free layer grafting. Our spectroscopy studies are further confirmed by the measurements of ET-induced photocurrents in Si substrates. Date: Tuesday, April 15th, 2014 Time: 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Location: Birck Nanotechnology Center (BNC) room 1001 Seminar by Dr. Ana Kanevce of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Title: "Insight into time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on thin-film solar cells using numerical simulations " Abstract Increased efficiency in thin-film solar cells requires higher degree of understanding of the recombination mechanisms, and separating the various types of recombination involved. Time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurement is a contactless and quick measurement method, and therefore one of the key metrics available to determine the minority-carrier lifetime in the absorber layer of photovoltaic devices. However, when a measurement is performed on a device, in addition to carrier lifetime, the TRPL signal is affected by multiple factors including drift, diffusion and interface recombination. Deconvolution of these factors and interpretation of results is often difficult.Numerical simulations are used to analyze carrier dynamics after a sample is illuminated with a short light pulse. Simulations can determine how material parameters such as doping and defect density at the interface and bulk, as well as experimental conditions such as wavelength, illumination intensity and spatial distribution of photo-generated carriers affect the measured result.A new formalism that enables greater insight into which factors dominate the TRPL decay dynamics was developed. By breaking down the carrier dynamics into drift, diffusion, and recombination terms this formalism can point which physical factors dominate the decay dynamics under various conditions and at different times during the decay. Using this mechanism, it was found that in a typical CdTe device under typical experimental conditions used in our laboratories, the faster part of the decay is dominated by drift and diffusion of carriers, while the slower part is dominated by carrier recombination. Bio Dr. Ana Kanevce received a Ph.D in Physics at Colorado State University doing characterization and modeling on thin-film solar cells. Since 2007 she has been a member of the Electro-Optical Characterization Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Her research is concentrated on different PV technologies, including silicon heterojunction solar cells, multijunction solar cells based on III-V materials, and thin-film polycrystalline solar cells with Cu(In,Ga)Se2, Cu2(Zn,Sn)Se4 and CdTe absorbers. Bio: Jo De Boeck received his engineering degree in 1986 and his PhD degree in 1991 from the University of Leuven. Since 1991 he is a staff member of imec (Leuven). He has been a NATO Science Fellow at Bellcore (USA, 1991-92) and AST-fellow in the Joint Research Center for Atom Technology (Japan, 1998). In his research career, he has been leading activities on integration of novel materials at device level and new functionalities at systems level. In 2003 he became Associate Vice President at IMEC for the Microsystems division and in 2005 started Holst Centre (Eindhoven) and became CEO of IMEC-Netherlands. From 2009 to 2011 he headed imec's unit Smart Systems and Energy Technology as Senior Vice President in the imec group. In 2011 he was appointed CTO of imec corporate. He is part-time professor at the KU Leuven and visiting professor at the TU Delft.

The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well. All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. No one will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period. In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, May 5 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 9. No chemical work will be allowed during this period. At the same time Physical Facilities electrical department will be completing major modification to the isolation grounding system in all general laboratories. Professor Bennett Goldberg Boston University "Strain Engineering of 2D Crystals" Thursday April 03, 2014 4:00pm PHYS 203 Refreshments are served at 3:30 p.m. in Physics room 242 Two-dimensional materials are flexible, transparent, compatible with living systems, and can enable new devices and physics based on their unique properties. One unique property is the ability of 2D crystals a single atom thick to undergo massive amounts of strain without failure. Since strain also drastically modifies the band structure leading to large changes in transport and optical properties, strain engineering of 2D crystals has the potential to create new devices, explore transport in pseudo-magnetic fields, and tune tunneling or excitonic effects. Graphene is the most well-studied of 2D crystals, and shows a strain-induced pseudo vector potential that can lead, in certain circumstances, to pseudo-magnetic fields. Recent work shows strain allows one to tune the band gap in transition metal dicalchognides, another class of 2D crystals. In this colloquium, we will explore strain by suspending 2D crystal membranes of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride over microchambers, creating a sealed drum. Tuning the strain through pressure deflects the membrane, changing its properties. Remarkably, the assumption of a fixed circumference is wrong, because we observe the 2D crystal sliding across the supported part of the microchamber. We will discuss friction, strain engineering, and future prospects for 2D crystals. HD TV Monitor Found!

It turns out that the monitor was stored at another location outside of the BNC, and now that it has been located we will proceed with the installation of all three monitors in the near future.
