Computer issues around 2pm today.

Hi, Around 2pm it appears there was some issues on atom that caused it to stop responding in its normal fashion which led to windows computers appearing to 'freeze' or respond very slowly and some people's computers may have actually 'crashed' from the slowness. Prof. Bob Squires

Dear Colleagues, I am deeply saddened to inform that Prof. Bob Squires (b. 1935) passed away peacefully yesterday evening. Bob received his BChE degree from RPI (1957), and MSE (1958), MS Math (1960) and PhD (1963) degrees from the University of Michigan, under the direction of the well-known catalysis scientist Prof. G. Parravano. He joined our School's faculty in 1962, developed and maintained an active and visible research program in catalysis, and reached Emeritus status in December 2004. He coordinated the School's co-op program from 1982 until his retirement. Bob was a legendary teacher and received our School's Shreve Prize for outstanding undergraduate teaching six times, the College's Potter award twice, and the University highest teaching award in 1981 (then Amoco Outstanding Teaching Award, now the Murphy Award). Nationally, for his outstanding teaching, Bob received the ASEE Western Electric Award in 1977 and the CMA's Catalyst Award in 1985. Bob and his wife Carol cared deeply for students and invited them regularly to their home for informal evening conversation and snacks. Over the years, I have spoken to many of his former students who recall these visits vividly and fondly - they made a lasting impression. I feel very fortunate that I visited Bob and Carol at their home about 5 weeks ago, and wrote to you about his health then. The funeral arrangements are pending and I will inform you when they are known. Bob will be sorely missed by family members, and countless admiring students, staff, and faculty colleagues. Please be aware that this route is only to be used by carts, mowers and Veterinary School traffic. In order to maintain a sufficient safety zone while loading and unloading Vet School large animals, all other traffic is required to utilize S. Russell Dr. to travel to and from central campus. The entry off of Northwestern Avenue near the Exponent building, and the entry off of Grant St. will remain open.

Network and Computer issues

Hi, We've been experiencing issues with atom and / or the network connection to atom over the last two days. You may have seen this manifest itself with "Delayed write failures" in windows, slowness when sending or manipulating emails especially if you use ECN's mail system (as opposed to exchange/outlook), and general slowness when using any ECN deployed machine or connecting to atom from a non-ecn deployed machine. I have been in contact with ECN since yesterday on this issue - things seem to clear up late Thursday afternoon but it also appears the issues have now started again late this morning. ECN is looking into the issue and I will send out an update when I have any additional information. I'm sorry for the inconveniences this is causing and please know I am experiencing the same issues myself. A test of the system will be conducted between 1-4 p.m. Friday, November 4. The university has sirens at Earhart Hall, Hawkins Hall, the Heine Pharmacy Building, Purdue Village, Hilltop Apartments, the Grand Prix race track and the Physical Facilities Service Building. Friday's test is to ensure the sirens are operable and will include an activation of sirens that could last up to 30 seconds and may be noticeable on campus. However, the potential for a full, three-minute siren activation is possible. Siren system checkout and verification may require multiple tests during the time frame. If there is inclement weather, the test will be cancelled. Please disregard any siren activation during this time period; no action is necessary. If you have any questions, please contact the Emergency Preparedness Office at 4-0446.
