This e-mail is to announce that Haoran Yang will be defending his dissertation, Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials Based on Solution Phase Synthesis: Towards Efficiency and Sustainability, tomorrow (Tuesday 7/1) at 10 a.m. in FRNY GO60A. The dissertation is being directed by Dr. Wu, and the abstract is below. All are welcome to attend. Title Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials Based on Solution Phase Synthesis: Towards Efficiency and Sustainability Abstract Thermoelectric devices fulfill the direct conversion between heat and electricity, which have many potential applications including waste heat harvest, solar thermoelectric power generation, solid state cooling, and etc. However, it is a challenge to develop materials with superior performance that allow the practical uses of thermoelectric technology. Recent progresses in nanostructured thermoelectric materials have shown great potential in the enhancement of thermoelectric figure of merit ZT. Meanwhile, it is equally important to consider the sustainability of thermoelectric technology, which should satisfy many features such as low-cost, energy-efficient, scalable, and pollution-free. In the present study, we aim at both the efficiency and sustainability in the development of nanostructured thermoelectric materials. We explore the feasibility of using solution phase synthesized nanostructures as the building blocks for the fabrication of high-performance thermoelectric materials, and then extend our research on some of the sustainability issues. Firstly, we show that composition modulation can be used to control the doping level in Ag2Te nanowires, which yield nano-grained samples with enhancedZT. Secondly, we demonstrate that a novel kind of dumbbell PbTe-Ag2Te heterostructures can be synthesized with wet chemistry, and a complex nano-inclusion-in-matrix structure can be achieved correspondingly, which mimics similar structures fabricated by melt synthesis that have been proven to be successful, and gives rise to a further enhancement in ZT. Thirdly, we studied the possibility to replace the hazardous chemical hydrazine with a green chemical ascorbic acid in the synthesis, and we show that various metal telluride nanowires can be synthesized including Ag2Te, Bi2Te3 and etc. Finally, efforts have been made seeking for novel thermoelectric materials contain only non-toxic and earth-abundant materials, and as a proof-of-concept study, Cu2ZnSnS4 nanocrystals based thermoelectric properties are investigated. The results suggest the bottom up approach toward nanostructured thermoelectric materials based on solution phase synthesis is of great potential. Not only simple nano-grained materials but also some more complex heterogeneous structures can be achieved with this approach. With proper control over the composition, these samples exhibit enhanced ZT. Moreover, the complex structures also provide an ideal platform to study the newly proposed energy filtering effect, which could enhance the thermoelectric power factor. The study on the sustainability has made progressed on “greener” chemistry for the synthesis of nanostructured thermoelectric materials. The searching for novel thermoelectric materials with environmental benign composition and cheap elements, although is still in the preliminary stage, stands for the future direction.

Results of safety inspections - June 2014

Hello Everyone, In preparation for the upcoming Safety Recertification of our School with REM, the ChE Safety Committee inspected last week all laboratories and offices in FRNY and the rooms occupied by ChE personnel in POTR. I am glad to report that we noticed an overall improvement in the safety of our labs. Please find attached a document that summarizes the he most frequent safety issues identified during the safety inspections. The document also spells out the OSHA and Purdue required documentation, PPE requirements and a reminder of some safety rules and policies applicable to our School. Please pay close attention to the safety gloves policy under the PPE section. It was brought to my attention that this safety rule is not always followed by our graduate students. As a reminder, safety gloves are not permitted on the corridors. Each faculty or person responsible for a specific area will shortly receive another email with the results of the safety inspection for that area, please address the problems identified. The Safety Committee will perform unscheduled inspections at the end of July to check whether the safety issues identified were addressed. Thank you all for your continuous commitment to safety! Safety incidents in FRNY

Hello Everyone, I would like to share with you two recent safety incidents in our School: 1. May 21, 2014: When a small amount of dry Pd/C was added to a flask containing methanol, a small flame was observed near the neck of the flask. The flame was instantaneous and disappeared quickly. No people were injured during this incident. To avoid this happening in the future, the procedure of mixing catalyst (Pd/C) with alcohol was modified to be performed under inert atmosphere. This measure was taken after identifying that the catalyst is most susceptible to rapidly ignite the vapors of lower alcohols (such as methanol). In the presence of air, many organic vapors that readily ignite can undergo combustion violently, but having the above procedure performed in inert atmosphere eliminates this hazard. 2. June 2, 2014: When taking the glassware out of the sink after washing, a piece of glassware dropped on the floor and broke. A fragment of broken glass bounced back and cut the researcher's hand. The lacerations to the hand caused by the broken glass were treated in the emergency room. The patient was discarded shortly after his wounds were cleaned and no further medical attention was needed. I hope that sharing this information with you will prevent similar situations occur in our labs. We plan to start in FRNY on Tuesday morning (6/10) and will work our way around to the rooms that have exterior windows. This should include all rooms that have blinds, or windows to the outside. It doesn't include things like door glass, or interior walls made of glass. The cleaning will take place between the hours of 7:30AM and 4:00PM, Monday - Friday. The door to each room will be left as we find it: if locked, we will lock it again when we leave. If unlocked, we will leave it unlocked. If you could please have all items removed from the window sills, that would be very much appreciated. We can't clean windows that have obstacles in front of the glass. If our crew members (Alex, Laura, and Juvenal) arrive to clean a window and the occupant doesn't want them cleaned, we will pass on to the next room. Safety inspection of ChE labs and offices

For your information, please find attached the inspection checklist used during the safety inspections. Please review your door posting, hazard assessment, chemical inventory, employee exposure record, MSDS folder and prepare the new Chemical Hygiene Plan for your work area.
