ChE Safety Committee Openings for Graduate Students

Hello Everyone, Five of the current graduate student members of the ChE safety committee (Shubhanshu Agarwal, Ilke Akturk, Bereket Bekele, Austin Choi and Gabriel Perez Schuster) have served for nearly two years on the safety committee and I want to take this opportunity and thank them for all their help and input as committee members; they have been very active and valuable members of our committee. I also want to thank Wei-Ling Huang for her service and contributions; Wei-Ling represented the GSO on the safety committee since June 2024. We are looking forward to working with the next GSO safety officer once results of GSO elections are announced. The ChE Safety Committee has now five (5) openings for graduate students. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated, and safety oriented graduate students to join our active safety committee. An ideal candidate is someone who still has to complete about 3 years of graduate studies and who performs research in a lab. Typically, graduate students serve on the ChE Safety Committee for a period of two years. We would like the new members to join us this summer (July 2025), as trainees, and then with full responsibilities from August 2025. Some of the Safety Committee members responsibilities are: * attend the safety committee meetings (once a month) and actively participate in discussions and committee activities * report unsafe conditions and unsafe practices/acts * assist in addressing safety issues/concerns * contribute with ideas and suggestions for improvement of safety in our School * follow safety procedures and rules and be an example for others for work safely * help with the safety inspections throughout the year, and with preparations for the ISP Recertification Review with EHS * help investigate safety incidents, if/when necessary * share safety information with colleagues, etc. For a more detailed description of the role please see this document: Responsibilities of graduate student members of the ChE Safety Committee<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/2023-05-11-Resp…> If you know someone who you think would be a good member of the safety committee, or if you feel this would be a good fit for you, please send your nomination or intent to join, and a short supporting statement/justification describing why you or your nominee should be considered for this opening, by email to: Gabriela Nagy: nagyg(a)purdue.edu<mailto:nagyg@purdue.edu>, by the end of day on Wednesday, April 30 , 2025. Avoid misuse of electrical cords

Hello everyone, One of the most common issues EHS finds during building inspections and ISP visits is the misuse of electrical cords, both in the lab and in offices (e.g.: daisy chain, use as permanent rather than temporary solution, etc). Paper disposal and electronics recycling day - TODAY

Good morning, everyone, Today is the day! 🌍 Earth Day Celebration – Paper Disposal and Electronics Recycling Day 🗓 Date: Friday, April 25 ⏰ Time: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm 📍 Location: FRNY Atrium Let’s take action in celebration of Earth Day and clean our offices (and labs) of old/unwanted electronics and papers. Please bring them to the atrium, where there is a pallet to collect unwanted electronics and a secure bin for disposal of unwanted (confidential) papers. If you have any small household items in good working condition, such as coffee makers, kettles, microwaves, etc. in your office and you don’t need them anymore but they could be used by someone else, please place them on the designated “Swap”table in the atrium - they are for grabs for anyone needing them. ISP Recertification of our School

Hello Everyone, I am pleased to let you know that following the Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) recertification meeting with EHS representatives on Friday, April 4, 2025, followed by safety inspection of selected ChE labs and corrections of identified deficiencies, our School was ISP recertified for another year. The official recertification document was signed on April 18, 2025, and made available to me yesterday. Thank you for your efforts in making this possible and for your sustained commitment to safety!
