All, Please see below a message regarding a thiol smell in the building. It appears the smell is still noticeable in the building, but there is no leak to be worried about. During the recent power outage there was a thiol odor leaking from the gloveboxes in Forney 3140. With the power returned the source of this smell has been shut off so there is no active leak and no danger. We have noticed that this odor is lingering in some of the stairwells and on the 3rd floor of Forney so we would like to inform everyone that this has been taken care of. Of particular note is the new set of questions on personal well-being. Faculty, grad students, and post docs are reporting diminished levels of well-being (overall and in comparison to staff and undergrads) as it relates to feeling like we accomplish all that we need to, that we can switch off from work, that we can manage both work and personal demands, and that we are engaging in enough high-quality interactions with others. Conversely, many are reporting the benefits of working remotely including no commute time, wearing comfortable clothing, and finding time in the day to exercise, eat healthy, and spend time with family. Leaning on our communities for support, engaging in acts of kindness and generosity, and finding joy in small moments may help to navigate these difficult times and, to some extent, soothe our anxieties. Thank you all again for taking time repeatedly from your summer to share with us all that you have. It is my sincerest hope that you all stay healthy and safe as we transition into fall. BE ADVISED - Due to testing of the emergency generator outside, the exhaust was pulled into the new side outdoor air intake so you may smell a slight burning odor inside the building. They will be done shortly and it will dissipate soon hopefully. Thanks. Jeff Valley

ChE Staff Excellence Award

Dear All, I am happy to announce this year's recipient for the ChE Staff Excellence Award, Jason Davenport. As you all know by now, the current pandemic has influenced nearly all aspects of our lives and one such was the cancellation of the annual faculty, staff, and grad student appreciation reception back in May. Due to that, we were unable to announce and properly honor all of the recipients of this year's awards as is our custom. For these reasons, the plaque for this award will be presented the next time we are all able to gather together. For the meanwhile, please join me in congratulating Jason Davenport for his fantastic job well done this year. His continual service not only pre-covid but also now during the pandemic has been crucial in our School's operations and it's ability to provide PPE and other needed supplies to all. Addition Fume Hood Shutdown

I'm sending this to all of ChE just so I do not miss anyone, so many of you can disregard this email if you do not work in a research lab on the addition side of the building. On the 1st of every month at midnight the system on the addition side switches motors that exhausts the fume hoods. This past Saturday it did not switch and the system quit working until someone reported it and they reset and put it back into normal operation. In accessing the system this morning, the techs found that there is a faulty relay/switch that needs to be replaced. To replace the part they say they will need to shutdown the whole system and it will be off for approx.. 4 hours for them to replace and test to ensure it is working correctly. I am asking the PI and grad students to determine when this can occur. It has to happen before the end of the month but doing it as soon possible is best and it will be over and done with. Please respond to the FRNY BLDING que so Nick and I can both monitor it. Although it is disrupting to have to shut down for a morning it needs to happen. Sorry and Thanks. Jeff

Addition Fume Hood Shutdown

BE ADVISED - Just a reminder that Monday morning , 8-10-20 , at 8 am the fume hoods on the addition side of the building will be shutdown for repairs. They have scheduled this shutdown for 3 - 4 hrs but hopefully it will be completed sooner than that. The shutdown is going to effect the addition side only.
