Good Morning, The Staff Awards Committee in the School of Chemical Engineering is happy to invite nominations for the 2012 ChE Staff Excellence Award. The criteria, nomination form and details are attached. Nomination Process: Any ChE faculty member, staff, graduate or undergraduate student can nominate any ChE permanent staff member. A nominator or contributor with a letter of support can endorse only one candidate. Nominations should be submitted to Cristina Farmus at cfarmus(a)purdue.edu<mailto:cfarmus@purdue.edu> by March 30th, 2012. Nominations should not be more than 2 pages long and need to include specific examples. Two letters of support are required (one page maximum), of which at least one must be from someone in our School. Due Date for Nominations: March 30th 2012, with the award to be presented at the May appreciation reception. Decision: The decision will be made by the ChE Staff Awards Committee and communicated to all School employees and students. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering GRADUATE SEMINAR SERIES Prof. Mihaela Vorvoreanu Purdue University "Using Social Media Strategically to Manage Your Professional Online Identity and Social Network" February 28, 2012 9:00-10:15 AM FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15 AM in Henson Atrium Abstract: This presentation addresses defensive and proactive strategies you can use to manage your online information, to use social media strategically, to promote yourself online, and to create a professional social network. Dr. V explains major social media dynamics that explain why conflicts and misunderstanding sometimes occur, and provides tips for not only avoiding misunderstandings, but also making the best of social media's networking potential. Bio: Dr. Vorvoreanu is an assistant professor in Computer Graphics Technology and Technology Leadership & Innovation at Purdue University. She studies the socio-cultural impact of new communication technologies. Before joining Purdue, she was an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Clemson University, SC, and the Department of Communication at the University of Dayton, Ohio. While at Clemson and UD respectively, Dr. Vorvoreanu taught various public relations and communication courses, and did academic research in the area of public relations and new Web technologies. She has published research articles in the Journal of New Communications Research, Public Relations Review and the Journal of Website Promotion and a book about online public relations: Web Site Public Relations: How Corporations Build and Maintain Relationships Online. Dr. Vorvoreanu holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Purdue University.

Dear all, The Truth & Beauty Seminar series will kick-off its activities on *Wednesday March 7, 2012* starting at *5:30 pm* in *FRNY G124*. Our first seminar speaker will be Prof. Rakesh Agrawal, the Winthrop E. Stone Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering. Prof. Agrawal will kindly share with us his vision of a future where the basic human needs of food, chemicals, heat, electricity and transportation will generally be met by solar energy. The talk is titled "Chemical Engineering in a Solar Energy Driven Sustainable Future". Please find the talk abstract attached. I hope to see you all next Wednesday. Cheers! Dear Graduate Faculty, Staff, and Students: We are currently conducting a brief survey that collects data regarding the availability and integration of writing courses in graduate programs. Graduate faculty, staff, and students in various disciplines across multiple universities are being invited to participate in this survey. Even if you have not taught or taken a writing course, please respond to the first few questions, which gather general information about how graduate students develop their writing abilities. Results of the survey will be shared upon request. Sullivan Co-investigator: Laurie A. Pinkert Purdue University Department of English Purpose of Research You are being asked to participate in a research study that will gather information on the existence of graduate-level writing courses and their role in graduate programs. Specifically, you will be asked to answer questions about your experiences in your graduate program. Specific Procedures You will receive an email prompt inviting you to participate in a web-based survey. Participation is voluntary and results will be reported anonymously. If you do not reply to the initial survey request, you will receive additional invitations to do so. At the end of the survey, you will be invited to indicate your interest in participating in a follow-up interview. If you indicate an interest in participating in an interview, a researcher will contact you with further information. Duration of Participation There are a total of 23 questions in this survey. There are 10 primary questions. Those without knowledge of writing courses in their graduate program will complete only the first 3 and last 2 questions. For those with knowledge of graduate writing courses in their program, Question 7 involves 13 sub-questions for each course that is listed. The survey is intended to take no more than 15 minutes. Benefits to the Individual There are no direct benefits to you; however, there may be benefits to general knowledge or society. Risks to the Individual Risks associated with this study are considered minimal and no more than what you would encounter in everyday life. You may choose not to answer any of the questions and/or discontinue your participation at any time. Confidentiality Survey results will be delivered and reported anonymously. The research team will not know the identities of those who complete surveys. Even if participants reveal themselves by naming specific courses they have taught or taken, the research team will not reveal the specific participant who referred to the course. Voluntary Nature of Participation Participation in this survey is voluntary. If you agree to participate, you can withdraw your participation at any time without penalty. Following the reception, she will meet with the Future Faculty group in FRNY B124. Dr. Anseth is among most distinguished chemical engineers today. She has received numerous recognitions for her research and teaching, including membership in both the NAE and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies by the age of 40 years - the youngest person to be elected to both academies. She is also a member of our School's Academic Advisory Board. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering GRADUATE SEMINAR SERIES Prof. Julie Liu Purdue University "Engineering Cell-Microenvironment Interactions for Stem Cell Differentiation and Tissue Regeneration" Thursday, April 5, 2012 9:00-10:15 A.M. FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15 A.M. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Tissue engineering therapies are currently being developed to replace diseased or damaged tissues such as cartilage, bone, and arteries. Due to their high proliferative capacity and their plasticity, stem cells have emerged as a promising cell source for tissue engineering strategies. To successfully utilize stem cells in treatments, however, it is necessary to develop efficient and effective methods for stimulating homogeneous cell differentiation. This talk will present our work on peptide-based cues for promoting differentiation of stem cells towards the cartilage fate or the endothelial cell fate. We will also present our work on developing a protein-based biomaterial for use in cartilage regeneration. Bio: Julie Liu received her B.S.E. in chemical engineering from Princeton University. She received a Whitaker Foundation Fellowship in Biomedical Engineering to pursue her Ph.D. in chemical engineering with a minor in biology from the California Institute of Technology. She was awarded an NIH postdoctoral fellowship to work with Jane Lian and Gary Stein in the field of bone and cartilage biology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. In 2008, she joined the faculty of the School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University. She has been awarded a 3M Nontenured Faculty Grant and the American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant to support her research in protein engineering, biomaterials development, and cell-microenvironment interactions.
