Crews with Walsh Construction Co. have nearly completed the reconstruction of US 52 between Schuyler Ave. and Greenbush. There will only be daytime lane restrictions in the area in which they will be working until the contractor finishes up work in the next couple of weeks. Motorists are encouraged to be aware of the changes in traffic patterns. Other improvements as part of the reconstruction will include shoulder, curbs and gutters, drainage structures, culvert, guardrail, and sign replacement. The turn lanes will be lengthened at the intersection of Underwood and O'Farrell Streets. This project is scheduled to be completed in August of 2012. INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone. He will describe the current environment for innovation in drug development and the challenges successfully faced in biotech process development and manufacturing in his 20 year career at Genentech. In addition to Genentech he will touch on biotech companies that he has helped to develop including Biogen IDEC, BioMarin, Theravance, and molecular diagnostic company Nanostring technologies including comments about the promise of personalized medicine. Bio: Mr. Young joined Clarus in 2010 as a Venture Partner from Monogram Biosciences, a leader in personalized medicine, where he served as Chief Executive Officer from 1999 through to the sale of the company to LabCorp in 2009. Mr. Young currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Biogen IDEC, Inc. and is a member of the board at Theravance, Inc. Mr. Young is also Executive Chairman of NanoString, a Clarus Ventures portfolio company focused on instrumentation and molecular diagnostics. Prior toE Monogram he was at Genenetch since 1980 at positions of increasing responsibility, including Chief Operating Officer responsible for all of the biotechnology company's development, operations and commercial functions. Prior to Genentech Mr. Young was at Eli Lilly and Company for fourteen years. Mr. Young received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University, his MBA from Indiana University and an honorary doctorate in engineering from Purdue University. In 1993 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his leadership in research, development and manufacturing of recombinant proteins using recombinant DNA technology.

Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate Seminar Series - GSO Seminar Dr. Alyssa Panitch Associate Department Head and Professor of Biomedical Engineering Purdue University "Tissue Healing and Regeneration: From Invention to Translation" Tuesday, November 1, 2011 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. FRNY G140 ABSTRACT: Using biology as a template for designing engineered analogues, we have developed two classes of molecular therapeutics coined peptidoglycans. The first class of molecules, called collagen-binding peptidoglycans, mimic many of the key functions of native small leucine-rich proteoglycans such as decorin. Proteoglycans are key ingredients for proper function and organization of collagenous tissues - the most abundant of thebody. The peptidoglycan design simplifies the native molecules to a polysaccharide chain with covalently attached collagen-binding peptides, but has the advantage of design control and the ability to make synthetically in large quantities. We have tailored the peptidoglycans for applications in dermal healing and inhibition of intimal hyperplasia following balloon angioplasty. The second class of peptidoglycans comprises mimics of the proteoglycan aggrecan. These mimics were designed based on the umet medical need of a treatment for osteoarthritis. The following design constraints were adapted: the aggrecan mimic must be resistant to proteolysis, easy to synthesis and must protect the native extracellular matrix from further degradation. Through out development of these technologies, the laboratory keeps a keen focus on both answering basic science and engineering questions and driving the technological solutions toward the market. This talk will focus both on research and technology transfer.

A test of the system will be conducted between 1-4 p.m. Friday (Nov. 4). The university has sirens at Earhart Hall, Hawkins Hall, the Heine Pharmacy Building, Purdue Village, Hilltop Apartments, the Grand Prix race track and the Physical Facilities Service Building. Friday's test is to ensure the sirens are operable and will include an activation of sirens that could last up to 30 seconds and may be noticeable on campus. However, the potential for a full, three-minute siren activation is possible. Siren system checkout and verification may require multiple tests during the time frame. If there is inclement weather, the test will be cancelled. Please disregard any siren activation during this time period; no action is necessary. If you have any questions, please contact the Emergency Preparedness Office at 4-0446.

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Purdue University Engineering Approaches for Functional Nerve Regeneration Christine E. Schmidt Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering Texas Materials Institute The University of Texas at Austin Damage to spinal cord and peripheral nerve tissue can have a devastating impact on the quality of life for individuals suffering from nerve injuries. Our research is focused on analyzing and designing biomaterials that can interface with neurons and specifically stimulate and guide nerves to regenerate. These biomaterials might be required for facial and hand reconstruction or in trauma cases, and potentially could be used to aid the regeneration of damaged spinal cord. New technologies to aid nerve regeneration will ultimately require that biomaterials be designed both to physically support tissue growth as well as to elicit desired receptor-specific responses from particular cell types. One way of achieving such interactive biomaterials is with the use of natural-based biomaterials that interact favorable with the body. In particular, our research has focused on developing advanced hyaluronan-based scaffolds that can be used for peripheral and spinal nerve regeneration applications. Hyaluronic acid (HA; also known as hyaluronan) is a non-sulfated, high molecular weight, glycosaminoglycan found in all mammals and is a major component of the extracellular matrix in the nervous system. HA has been shown to play a significant role during embryonic development, extracellular matrix homeostasis, and, most importantly for our purposes, in wound healing and tissue regeneration. HA is a versatile biomaterial that has been used in a number of applications including tissue engineering scaffolds, clinical therapies, and drug delivery devices. Our group has devised novel techniques to process this sugar material into forms that can be used in therapeutic applications. For example, we are using advanced laser-based processes to create "lines" of specific proteins within the hyaluronan materials to provide physical and chemical guidance features for the individual re-growing axons. We have found that these materials facilitate neuron interactions and are thus highly promising for regenerating peripheral and spinal nerves in vivo. In a parallel approach to foster nerve regeneration, our group has developed natural tissue scaffolds termed "acellular tissue grafts" created by chemical processing of normal intact nerve tissue. These grafts are created from natural biological tissue -- human cadaver nerves -- and are chemically processed so that they do not cause an immune response and are therefore not rejected in patients. These grafts have been optimized to maintain the natural intricate architecture of the nerve pathways, and thus, they are ideal for promoting the re-growth of damaged axons across lesions. These engineered, biological nerve grafts are currently used in the clinic for peripheral nerve injuries and are being explored for spinal cord regeneration. ***Coffee and juice will be provided at West Lafayette*** Christine E. Schmidt is the B.F. Goodrich Endowed Professor of Materials Engineering in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Schmidt received her B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995. She conducted postdoctoral research at MIT as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow, joining the UT Austin faculty in 1996. Dr. Schmidt is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and serves on the Editorial Boards for Acta Biomaterialia, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, International Journal of Nanomedicine, and the Nanomedicine. She has received numerous research, teaching, and advising awards, including the American Competitiveness and Innovation (ACI) Fellowship from NSF's Division of Materials Research, the Chairmen's Distinguished Life Sciences Award by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and a Whitaker Young Investigator Award. Dr. Schmidt's research is focused on developing new biomaterials and biomaterial composites (e.g., electronic polymer composites, natural material scaffolds and processed tissues) that can be used to physically guide and stimulate regenerating nerves. In addition, her group is investigating neuron-electronic interfacing using electrically conducting polymers as a means to ultimately develop new bioprosthetics.

The project starts three tenths of a mile west of State Road 526 to just under one half mile east of US 231 in West Lafayette. Crews will restrict the right lane of westbound traffic on S.R. 26 from Northwestern Avenue to Marsteller Street. This restriction will last seven to ten days. Weather permitting, crews will then move into the eastbound lanes to begin patching. They will suspend work over the winter and begin construction again on or after April 1, 2012. The project is scheduled for completion on August 4, 2012. To avoid long traffic delays, please use an alternate route through the Chauncey Village area if possible. ---------- Lane Restriction along Aviation Drive Beginning Monday, October 31, a contractor will be completing telecommunications work along Aviation Drive at the Purdue Airport. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the week, weather permitting. Flag persons will be on site directing traffic. ---------- Lindberg Road to Reopen between Northwestern Avenue and McCormick Road Lindberg Road is expected to reopen Monday, October 31 between Northwestern Avenue and McCormick Road. The road will open to vehicles following a 4:00 p.m. Halloween party and parade that will begin near the Celery Bog Nature Area entrance at the west end of the bridge. ---------- 2-Day Road Closure Expected on McCormick Road McCormick Road from U.S. 52 to Lindberg Road is expected to be closed for two days beginning November 1. American Suburban Utilities will be installing utilities across McCormick Road just north of McCormick Place Apartments where two sharp turns in the road are located. Local travelers will be able to access their homes along this route.
