Dear Colleagues, After serving since January, 2009 as our School's Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), Prof. Litster recently requested relief from this service, to devote more time to his teaching and research. Reluctantly, I accepted his request. On behalf of our School's faculty, staff and graduate students, I express deep gratitude to Jim for his outstanding service in this role. Simultaneously, I am pleased to inform that, effective July 1, Prof. Mike Harris has accepted to become our School's DGS. In this capacity, he will advise the graduate students and oversee the operations of the graduate office. I am grateful that Mike has accepted this position of leadership and service. Reminder: Safety self audit forms are due on Monday, June 3

Dear All, This is a gentle reminder that the safety self-audit forms are due on Monday, June 3. The self-audit of work areas (labs, offices, storage rooms, etc) is part of our Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) and are required to obtain our annual recertification with the University. The ISP Self-Audit checklist can be found on the ChE School's website, under the "Laboratory Safety Requirements" heading: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/AboutUs/Safety.html or on the REM's website http://www.purdue.edu/rem/home/forms/ispcheck.pdf The first seven sections have universal questions that apply to every area. Sections 8 to 24 have questions related to specialized operations. If an area qualifies as an office, common area (e.g., conference room, kitchenette), or computer lab and does not involve the handling of, use of, or exposure to hazardous chemicals, machinery, equipment, animals, or biological agents, only the first seven sections of the self-audit need to completed. If in doubt about the type of area being audited, please address all sections. Research laboratories and shops should address all sections. In addition to the self-audit, please review your door posting and hazard assessment. They should be accurate and dated within the last six months. Please return completed self audits to Gabriela Nagy in FRNY G051 by 5 pm on Monday, June 3. Biegler will become Department Head of Chemical Engineering, effective November 1, 2013. The current ChE Head, Andy Gellman, will continue to lead ChE until that time, in consultation with Larry on important departmental matters. Larry is in his 32nd year as a member of the ChE faculty, starting as an assistant professor in 1981 and advancing through academic ranks to his current appointment as the Bayer Professor of Chemical Engineering. He was also Director of the Center for Advanced Process Decision-Making from 1999-2005. In 2011, Larry was elected as a University Professor, the highest academic rank at Carnegie Mellon. Larry's research interests lie in computer aided process engineering (CAPE) and include flowsheet optimization, optimization of systems of differential and algebraic equations, reactor network synthesis and algorithms for constrained, nonlinear process control. Prof. Biegler has been an institute fellow at the National Energy Technology Lab, a visiting scholar at Northwestern University and Lehigh University, a scientist-in-residence at Argonne and Sandia National Labs, a Distinguished Faculty Visitor at the University of Alberta, a Chang Jiang scholar at Zhejiang University, a Gambrinus Fellow at the University of Dortmund, a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Heidelberg, a Distinguished Jubilee Lecturer at IIT-Bombay and the Hougen Visiting Professor at the University of Wisconsin. He is an author on over 300 archival publications and two books, and has given numerous invited presentations at national and international conferences. Larry serves as an associate editor for the SIAM Journal of Optimization and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry and has served in a number of leadership roles in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). In 2012 he was the meeting program chair for the Annual AIChE Conference, held in Pittsburgh. Larry was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2013. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Lewis Award, McAfee Award (Pittsburgh Section) and the Computers in Chemical Engineering Award, all given by AIChE, Curtis McGraw Research Award and CACHE Computing Award, given by ASEE, the INFORMS Computing Prize, and an honorary doctorate in engineering sciences (Dr.-Ing. e.h.) from the Technical University of Berlin. Larry holds a B.S. (1977) from the Illinois Institute of Technology and M.S. (1979) and PhD (1981) degrees from the University of Wisconsin, all in Chemical Engineering. He is married to Lynne Webber and they have one son, Matthew, who recently graduated from CMU. I am very pleased that Larry will join the college leadership team as the new Department Head of Chemical Engineering. His phenomenal scholarly reputation, demonstrated commitment to professional service, passionate interest in making the ChE department the best that it can be, and collegial nature make him an excellent choice for this position. Mail pickup, delivery changes for Spring Fling

FYI, notice from MMDC concerning mail pickup/delivery today... Materials Distribution Services will not run its regular mail delivery and pickup schedule this afternoon in order to allow employees to attend Spring Fling today. Morning delivery and pickup times are unchanged. There will be a special pickup at 10:30 a.m. to collect all campus and U.S. mail, parcels and shipping (FedEx, UPS) items at the following buildings: Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Lynn Hall, Lilly Hall, Agricultural Administration Building, Freehafer Hall, Krannert Building, Young Hall, Stewart Center, Beering Hall, Wetherill Laboratory, Hovde Hall, Schleman Hall, Pfendler Hall, Mathematical Sciences Building, Hampton Hall of Civil Engineering, Grissom Hall, Electrical Engineering Building and Purdue Memorial Union. Dear Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students, My apologies if you are receiving this email a second time. Everyone in the School of Chemical Engineering did not receive the email below the first time. The Chemical Engineering Graduate Office will go through a transition period over the summer as we are looking to hire a new Graduate Program Administrator/Counselor. We are currently in the process of reviewing the job description, which will be posted on the Purdue Career website in the near future. With this message I thank Deb Bowman for her service to the School of Chemical Engineering and the Graduate Office. Deb’s appointment in our School will end on June 7, 2013. She has been in our School since October 1985 as a secretary, and in the Grad Program Administrator Role since March 2005. Please join me in wishing Deb the best in her future professional endeavors.
