Dear Colleagues, After serving since January, 2009 as our School's Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), Prof. Litster recently requested relief from this service, to devote more time to his teaching and research. Reluctantly, I accepted his request. On behalf of our School's faculty, staff and graduate students, I express deep gratitude to Jim for his outstanding service in this role. Simultaneously, I am pleased to inform that, effective July 1, Prof. Mike Harris has accepted to become our School's DGS. In this capacity, he will advise the graduate students and oversee the operations of the graduate office. I am grateful that Mike has accepted this position of leadership and service. Cristina Farmus

Dear Colleagues, With very mixed emotions, I am writing to inform that Cristina Farmus has accepted a position as Senior Policy Associate with the Office of Global Affairs. Her start date is November 14 - she'll be there most of November 14 and 15, but work half-time in ChE and OGA for the following two weeks, until November 27. Cristina joined our School in July 2004 as the Business Manager and served admirably in this role for four years. Since September 2008, she has served as the first Administrative Director for our School. This was a new position created to address a wide range of administrative needs in ChE. In this capacity, she has overseen essentially all non-academic aspects related to operating our School: finances, facilities, staff, computer network, corporate relations, marketing, and strategic plan implementation. She has defined the Administrative Director position and has performed in an exemplary manner in all her activities. In addition to her regular duties, Cristina undertook many other tasks. She was a member of the Centennial Planning Committee and helped to organize all the School Centennial activities in 2011. Among many tasks, she worked with co-authors Phil Wankat and Nicholas Peppas to issue a new edition of our School's history book, titled "100 Years of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, 1911-2011." During this process, a new book project emerged, and thus a coffee table style book was published "A Pictorial History of the School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University, 1911-2011" for which Cristina is a co-author along with Phil Wankat. Cristina was a member of ChE Strategic Planning Committee in 2009, whose charge was to define the 2010-2014 ChE Strategic Plan and assess its progress - she has led the latter process since its inception. She is also a member of the ChE Industrial Advisory Council (IAC), handles all communications related to the IAC and coordinates all the School's corporate relations. For her extraordinary work, she received the CoE New Employee Excellence Award in 2005. In addition, she received the 2012 CoE Leadership Award for staff members. Cristina has performed at a superb level in all her activities. She has been absolutely central for our School's operation for many years but is now interested in broadening her background, which is understandable. She has worked closely with me and helped me tremendously to do my own job. I know that I speak for all of us that her professionalism and positive attitude in all her activities will be sorely missed by all. Pl join me in wishing Cristina the very best for the future. DL2 Award - FRNY Stacked Labs

Dear Colleagues, In fall 2012, the University announced the Discovery and Learning Laboratory Renovation Program (DL2) for 2013, where resources from the Offices of the Treasurer and Provost were made available to address high-priority research and teaching laboratory repair and rehabilitation (R&R) needs. We submitted a proposal in response to this solicitation, for $6.02 million, to renovate the entire Stacked Labs area - the only remaining renovation in Forney Hall. Cristina Farmus helped me to prepare the proposal. University-wide, twenty proposals were submitted and 8 were funded. I am delighted to inform that our proposal has been approved by the DL2 committee for funding. This approval is subject to Capital Projects Council (CPC) approval, and I expect that it will be forthcoming in due course. This allocation will provide the needed quality space for our School to address the space needs for our strategic growth plans. Good afternoon, My son Sean's FFA club is having its annual fruit sale again (this is his 3rd year). I was asked by him to see if anyone in ChE was interested in purchasing fruit through him to be delivered in the beginning of December (I'll bring the fruit to FRNY as in the past). Orders must be placed by tomorrow so if you are interested I'd need to know today / tonight (Sorry for the short notice yet again, I was just asked myself). The fruit comes in half or whole boxes and there are about 28 pieces in each full box. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Alan Lesser University of Massachusetts "Aspects of molecular mobility and topology on the mechanical performance of polymeric glasses" October 15, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The use of polymeric materials is widespread in virtually every application within our society today. They are now commonplace engineering materials of choice in many applications including, automotive, aerospace, housing, and medical applications. This is due in large part to the multitude of synthetic routes, molecular architectures, and processing strategies that enable an infinite range of materials with unique properties. In this lecture, we discuss aspects that relate molecular architecture and segmental mobility to engineering performance. We start by highlighting how basic alterations in molecular architecture affect key thermal and mechanical properties of glassy networks. We then discuss how these characteristics relate to nonlinear properties including the yield behavior, the post yield response, and fracture behavior. We illustrate how these properties change during the formation of the glass and how they are altered by process or cure conditions. We then present results that probe segmental mobility during active nonlinear deformation in a model glass. We distinguish between flow in a polymer melt to that of vitreous flow observed in polymer glass subjected to large inelastic deformation. Bio: Dr. Alan Lesser is currently a Full Professor in the Polymer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts. His research activities include structure-property relationships in polymers and polymer based composites, nonlinear and fracture behavior of polymer based materials, and processing polymers in supercritical carbon dioxide. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Polymer Engineering and Science Journal and Polymer Composites Journal. He also resides on the Advisory Board for the Journal of Applied Polymer Science. He is a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers, has served as the Conference Chair for the Gordon Composites Conference, and has served as Chair of the Polymer Analysis Division, and Failure Analysis and Prevention SIG, for the Society of Plastics Engineers. He has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals and more than 130 in conference proceedings. Dr. Lesser received his PhD in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1988 and joined the faculty in the PSE Department in 1995 after spending 6 years in industry working as a Research Scientist for Shell Development Company.

Topics will include alternative paradigms for process synthesis, practical methods for heat exchanger network synthesis, systematic identification of designs which exploit distillation, azeotropic distillation, extractive distillation, extraction, reactive distillation, and related separation technologies, techniques for coordinating the specification of separation conditions in a way to minimize energy requirements and equipment costs, separation synthesis for mixtures with very nonideal solution thermodynamics, reaction network or supply chain network synthesis, the interaction of process synthesis with control system synthesis, and related topics. ChE 597 Chemical Process Technology and Industry Structure (ICRN 66409) Spring 2014 TR 1:30-2:50 FRNY G124 This course will survey key sectors of the chemical processing industries and discuss the structure of the industry and the historical development and evolution of the technologies which have shaped them and the common flowsheet elements which have proven to be commercially successful. Examples will be drawn from a range of industry sectors, production scales, chemistries, and enabling technologies. The industry will be examined in light of factors which have most influenced its development including raw materials of choice, energy availability, and the development of new unit operations, as well as those which will influence its future course including advances in science and technology, environmental impact minimization, water availability, new sources of energy, and sustainability, carbon management, and climate change concerns.
