Hi All! GWG is excited to announce we will be hosting our third virtual seminar of the summer on July 2nd at 12 PM! Our speaker, ChE alumnae Dr. Melissa L. Sweat, will be discussing her experience as Research Chemical Engineer with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). Pre-packaged snacks and drinks will be provided beforehand for those joining to enjoy during the seminar from their respective workspaces! We will send out the RSVP link soon. Dr. Melissa L. Sweat Bio: Dr. Melissa L. Sweat is a Research Chemical Engineer with the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). Currently, she is matrixed to the Decontamination Sciences Branch at the United States Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical Biological Center (CCDC CBC). Most recently, her work has focused on understanding the contact transfer of liquid and solid chemical agents, as well as an investigation into the chemical penetration of hazardous materials into paint coatings. Before joining the research efforts at CCDC CBC, Dr. Sweat spent time in industry as a product specialist focusing on particle and materials characterization with Anton Paar USA. Dr. Sweat also completed an ORISE Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Transportation Security Laboratory, specializing in particle characterization and adhesion, as well as explosives residues evaluations for airport security applications. Prior to her postdoctoral work, she earned her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 2010, and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Purdue University in 2015. Her doctoral work focused on the mechanical behavior of C-4, with emphasis on the particulate and polymeric behaviors. Research Space 100% Capacity

Dear All, On behalf of the School, I would like to relay the University’s decision announced yesterday (see email below) regarding the use of all research spaces back to pre-Covid capacity. This measure will allow all Covid SOP constraints to be rescinded, EXCEPT for the continue use of masks at all times in shared spaces (labs, grad offices, etc.) regardless of vaccination status. With this, research spaces such as grad offices will also be allowed to be opened at 100% occupancy. There will also no longer be a need for any rotating schedules that research groups have implemented for Covid precautions for both labs and grad offices. All research related occupancy signs, along with Covid SOP signs have already been removed from appropriate rooms. Please remember that along with all this masks are still required for everyone at all times in shared spaces. In the days to come, new guidance will be issued regarding the use of face masks for non-instructional spaces, once that is available I shall follow up with an update. I would like to express appreciation to everyone for their amazing cooperation throughout this pandemic that allowed us to be able to get to this point and that much more closer to a sense of normalcy. New ChE Safety Committee members

Hello Everyone, I am glad to announce that at the ChE Safety Committee's recommendation, Dr. Corti appointed the following graduate students to serve on the ChE Safety Committee for the next two years. Their appointment started on June 15, 2021: 1. Gribble, Daniel (advised by Dr. Pol) 2. Pradhan, Apurva (advised by Dr. Agrawal) 3. Smith, Montgomery (advised by Dr. Z. Nagy) 4. Viswanath, Dhushyanth (advised by Dr. Won) At the same time, on behalf of the ChE Safety Committee, I would like to thank Mihit Parekh, Kaustabh Sarkar and Kyle Weideman for their exemplary service on the safety committee over the last two years. Their effort and input in the safety committee work helped increase the safety culture in our School! They will continue to serve on the safety committee this summer and help as needed with training/initiating the new members. David Dean, who was the GSO safety representative on the committee last academic year, will continue in this role in the 2021-22 academic year; we look forward to continuing to work with him over the next year.
