Changes to First Report of Injury (FROI) form submission process

Hello everyone, Please be advised that the mechanism of reporting work related injuries has changed, and the "First Report of Injury" (FROI) form is now completed and sent directly through DocuSign. The FROI form must be completed when a work-related injury occurs on the Purdue University campus. All injuries, regardless of how slight, must be reported to your supervisor immediately, but no longer than 24 hours after the injury. Upon notification of the injury, the supervisor will need to complete and submit the FROI via DocuSign, no later than 24 hours from when the injury was reported to them. Please follow the instructions on the DocuSign page and send me a copy of the document once submission is confirmed. Covid-19 impacted spaces in FRNY

Dear faculty, staff, and students, I have been notified last night that there is a COVID-19 positive test result for a member of our research community. This email is to inform you that the research spaces accessed by this researcher after their initial exposure to the virus, FRNY 1120 and FRNY 1190, are closed today for disinfection according to the Purdue prescribed procedures (see the cleaning and disnfecting guidelines at this link: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/worker/covid19/cleaningguide.pdf) These research spaces will return to normal operations after disinfection is completed, most likely starting tomorrow morning (2/23). Be assured that although these spaces are closed for disinfection, FRNY continues to be a safe place for teaching and research. Thesis Defense Announcement for Jason Wickham - Today

This email is to announce that Jason Wickham, will be defending his thesis: The Role of Adhesion in the Formation of Hot Spots in Energetic Materials Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 4:00 PM. The dissertation is directed by Dr. Steve Beaudoin and Dr. Steve Son. The abstract and WebEx info are below, and all are welcome to attend. The transformation of mechanical energy into thermal energy within composite energetic materials through various thermomechanical mechanisms is thought to lead to the creation of localized areas of intense heating. The growth of these “hot spots” is responsible for the bulk reaction or decomposition of the energetic material. Understanding the formation and growth of these hot spots has been an active area of research particularly for high-speed impact and shock conditions, but further work remains to be done in particular with respect to hot spot formation due to periodic mechanical excitation. Previous literature has established that many potential thermomechanical mechanisms may act at the interface between the constituent components of a composite energetic material. In order to provide further insight and guidance into the design of safer and more resilient energetic materials, the role of adhesion on hot spot formation for polymer bonded explosives (PBXs), a subset of composite energetic materials, was explored. Single HMX (1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane) crystals in polymer blocks were subjected to ultrasonic excitation and subsequent heating was captured via infrared thermography. Subsequent testing of HMX PBXs using a drop weight tower captured changes in the sensitivity of the energetic material. Variation of the polymer binder allowed for a range of adhesive and mechanical properties to be examined. These experiments on the role of adhesion under these kinds of excitations provided insight into how mechanical energy is being transformed into localized heating. This email is to inform you that the research spaces accessed by this researcher after their initial exposure to the virus, FRNY 1025 and FRNY 3150, were cleaned and disinfected according to the Purdue prescribed procedures , following the guidelines available at https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/worker/covid19/cleaningguide.pdf The research spaces are now back to normal operations, due to the diligence of group members who proceeded with the disinfection as soon as they learned this is needed.
