Hello Everyone, I am pleased to let you know that following the Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) recertification meeting with REM representatives on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, followed by safety inspection of selected ChE labs and corrections of identified deficiencies, our School was ISP recertified for another year. The approach considers the properties of molecular species involved as reactive intermediates in catalytic sequences and of active centers that bind them and how they act in concert to select reaction channels, often against those favored by thermodynamics. When applied to acid-base and oxidation catalysis at oxide surfaces, this methodology has uncovered unprecedented details about the types of active centers involved and the elementary steps that they mediate. For instance, the energy required to deprotonate a solid acid and that gained by placing the proton on a reactant molecule determine reactivity and selectivity for solid acid catalysts, because transformations involve the transfer of protons and cationic moieties at transition states. In contrast, oxidation catalysis on redox-active oxides occurs via H-abstraction from C-H bonds in reactants and the concomitant reduction of the metal centers in oxide catalysts. These steps are mediated by bound di-radical pairs with O-H and C-H bonds that are nearly formed and cleaved, respectively, thus making the energies of H-binding at surfaces and of C-H bond cleavage the relevant surface and molecular descriptors of reactivity. The environments that surround the binding centers complement their properties through solvation effects that are able to stabilize specific bound intermediates and transition states through concerted van der Waals or H-bonding interactions. Such stabilization becomes particularly evident (and consequential) when active centers reside within inorganic voids of molecular dimensions or are able to contact dense phases, such as liquids or bound adlayers. ChE Safety Committee Openings for Graduate Students

Hello Everyone! Four of the current graduate student members of the ChE safety committee ( Daniel Gribble, Apurva Pradhan, Montgomery Smith and Dhushyanth Viswanath) have served for nearly two years on the safety committee and I want to take this opportunity and thank them for all their help and input as committee members; they have been very active and valuable members of our committee. The ChE Safety Committee has now three (3) openings for graduate students. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and safety oriented graduate students to join our active safety committee. An ideal candidate is someone who still has to complete about 3 years of graduate studies and who performs research in a lab. Typically, graduate students serve as members of the ChE Safety Committee for a period of two years. We would like the new members to join us this summer (June 2023), as trainees, and then with full responsibilities from August 2023. Some of the Safety Committee members responsibilities are: * attend the safety committee meetings (once a month) and actively participate in discussions and committee activities * report unsafe conditions and unsafe practices/acts * assist in addressing safety issues/concerns * contribute with ideas and suggestions for improvement of safety in our School * follow safety procedures and rules and be an example for others for work safely * help with the safety inspections throughout the year, and with preparations for the ISP Recertification Review with REM * help investigating safety incidents, if/when necessary * share safety information with colleagues, etc. If you know someone who you think would be a good member of the safety committee, or if you feel this would be a good fit for you, please send your nomination or intent to join, and a short supporting statement/justification describing why you or your nominee should be considered for this opening, by email to: Gabriela Nagy: nagyg(a)purdue.edu<mailto:nagyg@purdue.edu>, by 5 pm on Monday, May 1st , 2023.
